Wow, I thought Maas would be too easy. I guess he really was a good candidate for this thread. He was a New York Yankee who set home run records for fewest at bats to hit 10, then 13, then 15 home runs. He got called up mid-season and hit 21 home runs in 79 games, a good pace for just about anyone, let alone a rookie. Finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting, and looked like the next Babe Ruth.

The next year, he hit about the same number of home runs in twice as many games, struck out well over 100 times, and batted .220 After that, he went back and forth from the majors to the minors, got traded a couple of times, and never again looked anywhere near as good as he did during that first half-season.

Pass to whomever throws out the next name.

Easy since I brought him up before....he is the Canadian WW1 pilot that tried to steal credit from the Aussies for shooting down the Red Baron.

No....that was funny though. This fellow went by Raoul Lufbery and no longer living. Here is a hint, his fame was in two countries.

I couldn't answer the one about the Yankee. I got impatient and disqualified myself by Googling.

Is Raoul Puffberry another pilot?

Yes! Facinating man who organized American pilots to fight for France during the first world war. He was known for his pet lion and by the time he was switched over to the US flying corps he had 16 kills, making him a triple ace. He trained Eddie Rickenbacker, who was the greatest American ace, and Doug Campbell the first Navy ace...he would take them flying against Germans in planes w/ no weapons so they would really learn to fly. His plane was shot down and was burning so he climbed out and jumped, aiming, they think, for a river but he missed and landed on an iron fence. He ended his career w/ 17 victories and is counted as an ace by both France and the US (his father was American but he was raised in France)
