Yes, and one of the most entertaining ball players of all time. He was killed by a farm truck that grabbed his shirt.

My friend has an Uncle Irving (pronounced "Oy-ving") if that counts.
Is he the big red dog from the kids' books?

He's a writer cuz I read westerns and he wrote some. There are a lot of writers who's last name is Irvine.

He is a writer, but I'm looking specifically for a piece of work for which he was really well-known (infamous) for, for a while. A movie roughly based on his fame in this regard came out a while back.

Nope...the movie wasn't that recent; about 5 years old. I'll try to think of a hint to spruce this one up.

Five years ago...blank. Spruce is a tree, there is The Spruce Goose, that big wood plane that Howard Hughes flew w/ I think is in Long Beach, maybe a Spruce is a xmas tree, I think it is a pine. That has to be the clue since it isn't a word one normally uses. Spruce grow on mountains...Irvine got wood on...Break Back Mountain! Is that right?

Howard Hughes was the basis of Melvin and Howard which had Terri Garr topless (Praise Jeeeezus!), didn't, shoot, the guy who was in Pretty Woman, have a movie where he played a writer who did fraud? I think that was about Hughes but the name of the movie is a mystery to me. Was that the Aviator?

No, the Aviator was about Howard Hughes. Richard Gere? I think the movie about the writing hoax was just called the Hoax.

Orson Welles had a movie called F is for Fake which was about a famous art forger named Elmyr de Hory. In this documentary, a recent biographer of de Hory also appeared--the very same Clifford Irving. The Hughes hoax broke while Welles was filming, so the movie took an additional meta-twist into the world of hoaxes and cons. There was a great 60 Minutes interview with him many years ago. Interesting to us in particular would be his take on how to weave a convincing false story. You can find the transcript here:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/01/2......61.shtml BTW Richard Burbage for those who don't know the name, was arguably the greatest English actor of all time. He was the lead man in Shakespeare's theatre company and as such was the first to play Hamlet, Othello, Antony, Lear, and many others. Some writers have imagined Shakespeare spurred on in his writing by saying to himself, "Here's one that Richard won't be able to pull off!"
