This should be interesting.
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/local/......ord.html Is there really going to be a ruling on whether or not you can use the word based on your race? Oh the irony.

From the info in the article the case does not seem clear-cut one way or the other. I would think the important thing is whether there was conscious harassment going on.

It's just a word.
Get over it people. No one should decide what I, or anyone else, has the right to say. This is stupid. Randi |

No, we all don't know that McAllister. Some of us know that the word comes from the latin base neger which is Spanish became negro and in French I believe negor or something like that. The meaning, literally, being 'black'. The term developed into the infamous 'n' word and was descriptive and not considered derogatory until the last century when it became popular to use the word 'colored' which also fell from favor. In the South (US South) the term was so common it wasn't considered racist by blacks or whites and was used by politicians fighting for the right of black Americans to vote. It has multiple meanings now, some divisive as in an insulting manner and others culturally acceptable depending on who uses the word and how it is used. As for it being racist it is not, but then again the word racist is so misunderstood today I guess it doesn't matter, ignorance of the meaning of words isn't as important as it once was. Just to let you know one of the most ardent racist of the last few decades, a man credited for modernizing the klan, has never been heard using ANY racial terms (not to be confused with racist) in public but he is clearly racist and clearly not 'ignorant'....misguided yes, but aren't many?
I don't use the word because it is just not a word I ever heard growing up but I can be just as vicious without using such slang. |

I only think the word is funny when HP Lovecraft used it as the name of one of the cats in a story of his [the name eludes me]. One of the more beloved cats, interestingly enough...

He understood the matter and was not using it to offend some of the audience. But for now it looks like the word will be a trigger for people to act out what they really feel inside - in a way that is IMHO sadly misdirected.

I just thought it was, I guess odd? that HP Lovecraft uses it in a way for a well-liked cat, despite his being so racist. In that context is really the only time I find it interesting. I agree the word has ugly power and should be avoided.

That one scene in "Blazing Saddles" with the old coot yelling it to the townspeople while the bell is ringing is pretty funny.
