I had the opportunity to review the printed copy of this the other night during our Magic Marketplace show and here are a few of my thoughts from the show:
Mes(s)merize: - An incredibly fair prediction effect with not one but two killer revelations! Pros: - This is a one person effect! You won't need any off-stage assistants or help to pull this off. - The method employed is incredibly easy to pull off and lets you focus on the presentation. - This packs small and plays big. I really loved the 'mess' part of Mes(s)merize. Cons: - There's a gimmick that isn't included and you need to construct. The good news is that this isn't a bad thing though because it's an incredibly easy gimmick to construct. Overall: This is a very smart effect that is perfect to add into your act. You'll be doing this in no time and honestly the price for this is so low for the impact this will have on your spectators. Job well done Stefan! |

Just got this...
It's got a really old school thing going on that I really love. And more importantly a theatricality that many other works could benefit from. Plus the principle explored here could lead any half creative performer to interesting places I liked it. d

Hi Luke and d,
thanks for your comments - I am happy you like the effect! I just learned that Christian Painter (whose "Protoplasm" I really enjoyed) did a really good review on Mes(s)merize at "mylovelyassistant.com": http://www.mylovelyassistant.com/reviews/view/2840 This pretty much sums together what I had in mind when coming up with the effect. Hello Stefan.
I am a solo performer and I'm looking or a new effect to throw in to my mental show. I usually change a couple of effects around annually due to repeat booking etc. I perform shows daily however always in various venues and this sounds good. I'm a solo performer and I never work with an assistant. I always have more than 20 people per show however my stage is always different, large house parties, parlour, stages, corporate etc... how realistic is it that this would work for all performances (audience wise)!? Best wishes. Joel.

Sorry for the duplicate post but I purchased Balls a couple of months go and this does not work for me. It's a good idea but it doesn't work for me.
Is this a different method!? Joel.

Hi Joel,
O.K., as you already answered your own question, there is no need for me to so so But for the sake of completeness: Yes, Mas(s)merize will work perfectly for the venues you described and without any secret assistants! Stefan |

I used Mes(s)merize for the first time last night for an audience of around fifty. Worked simply and allowed me to focus on the fun of the event. It's a jewel.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is GREAT! If you're looking for a killer one-man prediction that packs flat and plays big then you can't go wrong here. The method is devious, simple and fooling. This plus the incredible audience interaction and you have one heck of a showpiece here guys!

Olympic Adam,
thanks für the honest (and great review. I am happy you like it - Mes(s)merize still is one of my favourites and of course in my active repertoire. I put it on the DVD, because many People wanted to see the routine performed live, so this was a great opportunity. Best Stefan |

Do you have video of this online? I would love to see this!
Also, can it be adapted for use with a cell phone? Could people text you the words they were thinking of? Chad |

I saw a video of this on youtube once (from a link on the Café), it plays exactly as it sounds (i know that's not much help, but there's nothing hidden)
I'm not sure how the texting would end with one reveal? maybe then we can answer the question? I wouldn't use a phone for something like this because the reveal is part of it's charm (with envelopes and the glass) and you also might not be able to, there is a method at play, and it does involve physical things so I don't know how a translation to phone would work (also it might raise un-needed suspicion) You can view it on the mentalities DVD, it has some good thinking too though for me this is the pick of the routines

Adam,
you summarized quite well what I would have answered Chad, you got an PM - if you could go into a little more detail on how you would do the final reveal, maybe we coild work somethign out. But still the beauty of my effect lies in the visuals of the envelope in the glass and the people secretly writing their thoights on the cards. Any technical level could distarct from the cleanness of the effect. Best Stefan |

Ok, I finally bought this after all this time.... The reason I didn't buy it back when it came out was that it just didn't make sense that it would work during one part of the routine. So I bought it just the other day and I was right….. It doesn’t work as described. It said in the advertisement that the audience throws their envelopes onto the stage creating a mess on the floor. How can this happen? I use to work on stages and thrown envelopes would never make it up to the stage from the audience. Unless the word stage in the advertisement means a totally different thing than what a real stage really is.
I read the PDF and then got an envelope like described and stood in my office and threw it as hard as I could. It went this way and that way and finally landed about three feet to my right…. It didn’t have a change of making it to a real stage. I tried five different ways of throwing the envelope and not one made it over two - three feet from me. So what am I missing? How can I get a flat light envelope to fly 20 feet or so unto a real stage? Like I said earlier it just doesn't make sense. I thought that maybe the envelopes could be gathered in a bowl and brought up to the stage and there a spectator or the performer could then just dump the envelopes onto the stage floor. This way, at least the envelopes would make it to the stage. Best Ray |

I know you also asked in Penny For your thoughts, but I'll put it here too:
Although I haven't tried it, I kind of felt like you do that it wouldn't work that way. I was already trying to come up with a solution. This might work: So after everyone has put the cards in the envelopes you have them pass them down the line so the first four or five seats get them. Then you have those persons walk up to the front of the stage or closer to you, and then toss their bundles. See if that helps. Greg
