Paul Sponaugle, a fairly well known magician (and very nice guy) from the Atlanta area, recently had a very sad tragedy in his family. Following please find a brief summary, this is another chance for the magic community to shine for a brother's family in need. Everyone please be careful driving!
Dear Friends, Many of you may know, and some may not know. My niece, Trina, was in an horrific automobile accident on Christmas Eve. She and her family were traveling to visit my sister, Trina's mother, when, for unknown reasons, their vehicle left the road and overturned several times just a few short miles from my sister's home. Paul Haxton (the father) was killed instantly. Trina Haxton (the mother and my niece) remains in critical condition with severe spinal chord injuries at the Critical Care Unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Their two children, Lyndsey and Hayley have been taken in by their grandmother (my sister). Trina was a stay-at-home mother. There is no income and future bills outlook is alarming. Here is a picture of the children: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=17......66414323 Here is a link to the initial story that appeared in the newspapers: http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20......er-crash ... and here is a link to a support website that has been set up to help Trina for the future and her children in the now. http://thehaxtonfamily.chipin.com/the-haxton-family If you have been blessed with good health and/or have a happy, healthy family, please consider making a small donation to help Trina with her present and future medical bills and for the care of her children. If you have friends and/or a contact list, please consider forwarding this on to anyone you know who has a generous heart. Instead of spending $3.50 a day for Starbucks, consider taking a week off and donating a little to help Trina and her children. Thanks to the wonders of technology, hopefully, one day, Trina will know of your generosity. Thanks so much for reading this message. I am heart-broken. These two beautiful little girls have forever lost their father. They have lost access to and the caring touch of their mother for an undetermined time. Trina's mom (my sister) was nearing retirement from her job and is now the caretaker of a 6 and a 4-year-old. Trina has a very difficult road ahead of her. Respectfully, Paul Sponaugle http://www.magicandmirth.com |

Thanks, Robert, for posting this. We have uploaded a video to introduce you to the family. For the record, Trina and Paul loved magic and asked me to perform almost every time I saw them. Trina has continued to have issues and has had a tracheotomy performed on her and now has a feeding tube directly into her stomach because she cannot swallow. The need is very real.
==== Here is an updated post with a VIDEO LINK to introduce you to the family. ==== Dear Friends, Please take a moment to read this message. I want to let you know of a tragic accident involving my niece and her beautiful family. On Christmas Eve, my niece, Trina Haxton (29), and her husband, Paul (30), were driving with their two daughters, Lyndsey (6) and Hayley (4) to visit Trina's mother (my sister). Less than a mile from her mother's house, they lost control of their car. It rolled several times, finally landing upside down in a ditch. Paul was killed instantly and Trina sustained severe spinal chord injuries. Miraculously, the girls survived with only minor bruises. No one witnessed the accident, but a neighbor heard the girls crying for help and was able to get the girls out of the car and save Trina's life. Trina was air-lifted to the University of Maryland Medical Center where she underwent emergency surgery on her spine and is currently in critical condition. She suffered such devastating injuries that she will likely be a quadriplegic. We are hopeful that she will be able to breathe on her own. Paul's New Year's Eve funeral was attended by hundreds of friends and family members but not by his loving wife. Fortunately, they were able to videotape the funeral so that Trina can watch it when she is conscious and healthy enough. She has not seen her girls since the accident. The girls are safe and staying with my sister, Trina's mother, in Delaware. My sister was nearing retirement and will now care full-time for her daughter and two granddaughters. As you might imagine, Trina is facing a lifetime of devastating medical costs. They are a loving family. Before the accident, Paul was a devoted father who worshiped his girls, and Trina was a dedicated mother who stayed home with them. Now, she faces an unimaginable battle. I am asking you to consider making a donation to help them care for the girls and provide ongoing care to my niece, who may never be able to hug her children again. For all the fun runs, 5Ks, bake sales, and office pools you've ever given to, please consider this request. Perhaps you can make a donation in thanks for your own personal blessings. We are heart-broken and hoping for a miracle. The family is accepting donations at the following site: http://thehaxtonfamily.chipin.com/the-haxton-family I am also attaching a link to a video with some pictures of my niece and her beautiful family. Please feel free to forward to anyone whom you believe might be moved by this story. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7cLbb0cDvI Sincerely, Paul Sponaugle Here is a link to the initial story that appeared in the newspapers: http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20......er-crash Quote:

(January 21, 2010 update) Dear Friends and Family, Trina has had two additional surgeries in addition to the 2-3 surgeries she had just after the accident. Her spine was not healing as the doctors hoped it would. They put her back in surgery this week and fused her 2nd & 3rd vertebra. This will take away all ability for Trina to move her head forward and backwards. Add to that the limitations I have explained earlier (the real possibility of paralysis below the waist and of all movement below the elbows). The upside is that they have removed the HALO head restraint and put Trina into a hard plastic neck brace, which is even more uncomfortable than the halo device. (Rumor has it that the doctors are trying to make it a bit more comfortable for her! <smile>) Theoretically, in 4-6 months, she will be able to remove that brace. Doesn't mean she will ever regain feeling anywhere below the chest or below her biceps, just that she will hopefully be able to breathe on her own and someday have no restraint device around her neck. We still hold out hope. Although she continues to have many visitors, Trina gets very lonely when no one is there. She is more and more alert and feels very alone when she wakes up and no one is with her. Today, Trina had to have an operation to put a screen in her artery(?), I'm guessing that this is to treat the pulmonary embolism she has developed and to catch blood clots that break loose so they don't cause a stroke. Trina still has a stomach feeding tube and a tracheostomy (look it up... I did!). I know that she was having to lie flat on her back and not move after the surgery. I'm not sure yet whether she can be put into a sitting position. We are far from being out of danger's path. Trina does seem to be in better spirits today. She was really down going into this most recent surgery. The hope is to stabilize Trina, get her to breathe "comfortably" on her own and move her into some kind of rehab in the next week. Not sure what that rehab entails, but I think it will probably be helping Trina to adapt to her new way of life. Trina's mom and Trina's step-dad are living in Trina and Paul's home and trying to "normalize" the lives of Trina's two children. They have a very active "mom's group" in the neighborhood, and they are helping out with cooking and taking care of the kids during the week as Trina's mom and her husband spend much of their time at the hospital. During the past six months, Trina lost her father, her husband, was in the accident and lost access and the ability to lovingly touch and care for her two daughters. She is going through a hard time. Please keep her in your thoughts. Thank you all again for your loving concern and financial support. I have included the "Chip-In" letter at the bottom of this e-mail. If you wish to send it out again to your contacts, it would be appreciated. Sometimes, TIMING is important in these missives, and it will reach someone it didn't reach before. Paul Sponaugle Magic & Mirth p.s. Feel free to pass this along to others you feel may care for Trina's well-being. ======================== Here is a letter we sent out asking for help. Please feel free to pass the part below this line along to your friends or anyone on your mailing list. There is a VIDEO link in this message.
