If you do the Birch/Grant packing box escape as a substitution you can have your local show committee build the box (or have a lumber yard build it) as a "challenge" and display it before your show for publicity. Then you don't have to carry anything! You then break it apart with an axe at the end of the routine to show the box is unprepared. Let the committee burn the pieces.
Plans are in Tarbell Vol. 6. Abbott's Canvas Covered Box breaks down completely for packing. You can have the committee assemble it on stage during the show and examine everything. |

Maybe I should use popular instead of pine?

I bought an old Abbott's sub trunk from Judith Helms (Mercer Helms' ex-wife), back in 1988, and it's one of the best props I've ever owned. I've performed it hundreds of times and it's completely maintenance free and worry free. You can't go wrong with Abbott's trunk. Not sure if the new ones are of the same quality as the one I've got, but the plans should be the same. Packs flat (unbolts at the corners). Or you can pack your show in it.

It is not easy to work with, cutting, drilling, etc. is a lot more work then working with pine. To my knowledge, Abbott's never released their plans to the Canvas Covered Box. |

I used cabinet grade plywood. More expensive but you don't have to seal it (I don't think).

It uses the aluminium braces mentioned above and is held together with 8 carriage bolts. I stained it and vanished it once it was finished. See a picture here http://www.incredibleillusion.com John |

I used 3/4" ply on mine too. It is a very sturdy trunk with no bowing in the lid when standing on it. I used aluminum angle iron and bolts in the corners. I'm happy with it. I hope this helps.

If building with plywood, it might be a good idea to build the top from 3/4 ply, but I would build the rest of 1/2 to save on the weight. The rest of the box would only be under compression when you stand on it so 1/2 would handle that just fine. The top would be under tension so it could bow.

Okay, got and watched the Pendragon's dvd on the trunk. Very informative also about the history of their careers and their evolution of their trunk presentation. Do people still prefer the t**p in more traditional locations or does everyone now build them like Pendragons? thanks.
I've got two plans in the Wels illusion books. One is a back and one a top trunk. But the catch is what I'm interested in now. Do people recommend one type of gimmick for the catch of the t**p than another? I'd like to get some really clear detail plans on the gimmick. Thanks. Jim

On my own experience, back loaders slow down the person who, uh... the first person. You know what I mean.

Per my last post above, anyone have advice regarding current best type of gimmick for the t**p and where to get detail plans of that device? Thanks.
Also, advice on where most people put the top t**p these days? Do most people now adopt the Pendragon position or are other positions of the top t**p still used? Jim

Make it towards the back. It speeds the 1st person up big time.
I believe, though, it all comes down to personal experimentation. |

Fábio's right... it's a matter of personal preference. I have used both methods and I found the top to be much better and much faster.
If you can imagine in fine detail how you'd like your presentation to go you may find some things that will steer you toward one over the other. If you are really not sure and can't get your hands on one to try out, it may be to your benefit to build functional-but-not-pretty mock-ups out of scrap lumber to physically see which best suits you and you assistant(s). At some point our collective opinions become meaningless to you. But whichever you eventually choose, I'm sure you can make it work for you. |

Thank you, gentlemen. You are self-evidently correct. The good thing is I will be able to fairly easily try and have different tops as needed. The trunk stays the same.
Just watched Doug Hennings trunk. Like the way his lid is unattached and uses a chain all the way around with hasps to secure the lid. Does anyone have advice regarding current best type of gimmick for the t**p and where to get detail plans of that device? Thanks. Jim
