I wanted my presentation to be as much like Doug Henning's as was practical, and I went with the Paul Osborne plans. Nice and easy (relatively speaking, of course!) to build. Mine was made in 1983 and is still as strong as the day I first performed it.

I did make a rather significant change to the gaff which makes it even more secure. If you get the plans, PM me and I'll elaborate, but you'll need to understand the plans first so it will make sense.

Best of luck!

Frank,
So the Osborn plans have a pratical current-day use of the gaff. Then I will get the plans.
I wonder if I get one of his books that has the subtrucks if those book plans would have enough detail on the gaff as the individual plans do?

I'm not sure of one of his books having the plans... I only have his first three books plus the Illusions - The Evolution and the Revolution of the Magic Box. But I think it's probably reasonable to presume that it would be included in The Classic Illusions Vol. 1.

For some of Paul's illusions I would prefer the full-size plans to get some more detailed measurements (although they are renowned for having to make adjustments), but I should think that you could get everything you'd need out of the book-size plans.

James. Have you considered buying a used trunk? It's a whole less hassle then taking 4 days to make one.

Jay,
I do weight that whether to make or buy but that depends for me on how busy I am show wise and otherwise and if I can find what I want or if I want something custom and if I can afford it at the time. This one is a pretty easy build so I'll just do it.

If you have easy access to a considerable amount of good, rather thick wood, do what a friend of mine did to make sure his lid had, you know, the best sized and located "gimmick" as possible.

Make the whole trunk, except for the lid. Cut some pieces of wood the exact size your lid's gonna be and, on each one, cut a differently sized / located h*** and secure it atop of the trunk (tie it with some really tight ropes).

Then try out some of the different phases of the transformation. I think you know wat I mean by "phases".

This is a sweet way of knowing where your gimmick should be located and how large it should be. In the end, though, it all comes down to endless practice and rehearsal. Watching the Pendragons' video on it is VERY helpful as well. And watch it very carefully: Their beautiful Gaughn trunk haS some particularities that I don't recall being talked about on the DVD (I might be wrong, though) and really enhanced the illusion of speed on their transformation.

Thanks, guys. You've all be so sharing and helpful. I just bought the first Osborn illusion book which has the trunk(s) designs in it and will report back. I am assembling information before settling on a design. I think it's really smart idea to make a mock lid and try different sizes and positions.

I would suggest making the t**p as large as you can and still be sturdy. It makes it easier and in time people gain weight and it may help to have a bigger trap in years to come.
