I will be taking a leave from this forum for a while. I am finding the current political hijinks a burden on my spirit. I will check PMs and I will be lurking to make sure Chessmann comes back in good health.
Take care, my friends. I'll be back in a couple of weeks, I am sure. John

You know what, dude? Upon further consideration, I have to conclude that I'm with you on this one. This part of the magic Café is a cancer on an otherwise great resource for magicians. Let it rot in hell for all I care. I'll be busy in the magic sections- but this place is poisonous, and I'm not having it any more.
Adios, suckers.

I like this forum and I for one will not stop checking this site out (I don't need to protect myself) and whether I agree or disagree with someone's opinion or belief system, I keep it civil and try to show respect to other's just as I would like other's to respect my opinion's (which may or may not be as things are). I don't critize other's spelling or grammer because as all can see, I am very poor with both but I don't let that stop me from saying what I want. RESPECT is the key word here. Enough of my RANT. We are all free to come and go as we wish and I have no problem with those who don't want to come to this forum. It would be nice to just leave and not be bitter with those who post here and there is no cause to resort to name calling. Enough said. Iven

Thanks, Iven. I'm with you. I am a relative newcomer to this site and this forum. I keep telling myself not to "waste time" on it, but the diversity of opinion is refreshing. Name calling and personal attacks on each other, that's just stupid. But a vigorous exchange of ideas is to be encouraged. One of the nice things about this forum, is that it keeps all of this stuff away from the rest of The Magic Café, and I think that is a very useful forum. It is tiresome if you think you have to respond to every wrong and wrongheaded idea and prove your points to people who will never agree with you. But if you are willing to share your perspectives without being invested in whether other people will ever come around to your point of view, I think there is an occasional flash of light in all the heat. Don't just pick up your ball and go home, stay in the game!

I am so happy that the magic Café censor has deleted the right wing hate propaganda.

Yes, I agree. Freedom of speech is very cancerous. I thought it was worth quoting again. I have to totally agree with you. Using this forum to flame another member of the Café is not only childish but very disrespectful. If you do not agree with someone's politics or religion that is one thing, to specifically start threads to flame someone is not only crawling the bottom of a scummed bucket, but I would also think that some of those who particapated in it would have more class, intergrity, and ethics than that.

Voicing an opinion is one thing. Incessant, divisive hate speech is another. When you have a few select people spouting "Liberals this" and "Conservatives that" then it does create a climate of hate, which does get tiresome. And it is being done by people on both sides. And people on both sides need to stop it 'cause it takes two to tango.
To put it another way, are we all standing up for own own point of view, or merely attacking someone else's? Do we know what we like, or just what we hate? When the dust settles, do the others know what we are for, or only what we are against? Again, not everybody does this, but it happens on both sides of the aisle.

I, too will be taking a break from the Café, since the prohibition against political and religious discussion seems unlikely to change.
I really wish the "climate of hate" rhetoric would stop. People have ideas and using general terms like liberal and conservative are useful ways of putting those ideas forward. I know I'm a bit of a polemicist, but some people on this board run out of substance inside of 10 words and then have to get personal. I can take it, but I guess other folks can't. I maintain the folks on the left side of the political spectrum do this a lot more than those on the right. And then there are those who prefer to overwhelm a thread with copy-paste instead of typing their own messages and telling us what they think. Lookit, we are losing the language when we view disapproval of behavior or disagreement with policy positions as hatred of the individual. If we continue to censor speech in this country, if we continue to moralize on politics and politicize morality, we will lose all of the liberty God gave us and which was recognized in 1776. So I will miss the joust, as it were. I enjoy a good discussion, but I can't confine my discussion to worldly banalities like "Star Wars vs. Star Trek." There are much more important things going on, and they need to be talked about. The numbers of views and replies on topics I've been involved in seem to indicate their relative popularity. Why can't we keep that going? I would like the Magic Café to revise its policy to discourage personal attacks, but even political and religious ideas should be allowed to be discussed in "It's Not Magic, But ..." Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to find another outlet for the two passions of my life. Carrie |

Finding out what other people thing is just the thing that has gotten out of hand here. No one has the right to shout fire in a crowded theater. Woland Yes propaganda of any kind serves only to make other people angry.

Critter, it's tough to resist the urge to fight back when you feel attacked. But you are right- it serves no productive purpose. I'll start turning the other cheek.
