As an aside, Silverking, will any hand with an ace in it also beat the king/queen hand?

Descriptions of what actually happens can be difficult to make out in Ben's blurbs..........but presumably, in Ben's example as he used it in his last post......... the Queen/King is the high end of a completed straight with the King as the high card.
That hand would be beat by any hand that's higher than a straight, or by a high straight to the Ace (a higher straight than the straight to the King).

The unfilled gut-shot straight draw (the losing J-K hand) would presumably be something like 8-9-10-J-K (missing the queen......the "one point" apparently)............this hand is essentially "high-card", and would be beaten by any hand with an Ace in it (a higher card than the K in the unfilled gut-shot), or anybody who actually had a completed hand (like a pair of two's).

It's probably all irrelevant though, as the procedure Ben has come up with (in his own words) only "loosely infers" anything to do with poker.
Personally, I'd say it all has absolutely nothing to do with poker.

SilverKing. My example of K/Q and K/J was only to demonstrate what I meant by "one point." It was used in the context of only the hole cards having being dealt. So, if you were explaining to a spectator that "his hand" was just that little stronger at this early part of the game (prior to the flop), then it would be easily understood. The spectator looking down at the K/Q and K/J could see and understand. It has nothing to do with the completed hands. Nor the straights your imply.

This is NOT a hard core Poker Deal. And I'm not implying that it is anything more than advertised. This is a piece of hands off mentalism with cards. It is based around an imaginary game of texas hold-em. The game is interpreted in real time for a LAY audience. Thus, it's simplified so as anyone will be able to follow, and understand, the unfurling hands. It's self-working. It's really cool that your prediction is handed out BEFORE you start. It's cool that it is a different result EACH time (great for repeat performances). It's nice that you only need a regular deck, no gaffs. It's got a lot going for it, but a HARD CORE POKER DEMONSTRATION it is NOT!

Demo coming. And, not in the usual way.

Cheers

I agree- I think you are going a little over the top silverking. You are trying to act like silverkong here- RELAX a little- life is to short to get so ANGRY at a trick! I know from purchasing Ben's stuff in the past that MOST of Ben's material is STRONG and for workers. Like Ben says- if you don't like it and felt like you have been cheated- get a refund!

So..sorry...? I'm confused by all the childish whining....

Do I need to be one of the 50 or so million people that actually play poker to get something out of this, or is it okay if I just don't give a s**t about sodding poker?

Seriously, I've been reading some threads whilst eating my lunch and between the immature venom in this one and the Sleeve Star one that was railroaded by some freak in eyeliner, one wonders what the hell is going on with the world....

This sounds like a good one Ben, I'll be adding this to my list of things to get.

Good information to have out there, thanks.

(for the sycophants in the thread who can only come up with "relax", and "**** off", it's very sweet of you to take the time to focus so strongly on me personally........but you'd best shuffle off and find a thread that you can actually contribute to).

REVIEW:
BEN Harris PSI POKER

Ok.......so what can I say, about every couple of months Ben comes out with another wonderful ebook...

he has so many...but to name a few........crossroads, silent running, run silent run deep, xray, through the universe, etc etc, and now this....

ok....so what you get is a pdf of the effect psi poker........and 2 handlings.......basic and advanced...

although I like the advanced..i will stick to using the basic version as Ben prefers too.

You get very detailed instructions on how to perform this piece, even though you don't know how to play Texas Hold Em...

This is a very easy, straightforward effect, that should play big to spectators....

I have a psi poker effect I do that is very different and uses the poker theme, well I can now ring this is as an add on to that one, and do a 2 in 1 double punch....

I will be using this...

I will try it out tonight at home and give it a whirl...

keep it up Ben....

Thanks

Hi guys.

We've spent the last week or so going over PSI-POKER with our editor. It's now tight and solid as can be. We've also taken this time to further check with magic's leading historians (including Max Maven) and can confidently confirm that PSI-POKER really is a NEW APPLICATION of an age old principle.

Here's the NEW OFFICIAL BLURB:

PSI-POKER by Ben Harris

PSI-POKER is the latest creation from Ben Harris (co-creator of 2010’s hit “X-RAY”).

This new effect is TOTALLY SELF-WORKING, requiring no skill or gaffs. The secret is ancient, but it’s NEVER been used in this manner before. Magic’s leading historians and card experts have confirmed this claim.

So, what is PSI-POKER?

The effect is a MULTIPLE PREDICTION of how a game of “Texas Hold ‘em” will play out from a shuffled deck. You hand a prediction to a spectator for safe-keeping BEFORE you introduce a deck of cards. The prediction is NEVER again touched by the performer. The deck is shuffled, and another spectator is asked to DECIDE WHERE the cards should be dealt from. He cuts the deck to do this, OR HE CAN SIMPLY POINT TO ANY SPOT IN THE DECK. His choice is FREE. It is emphasized that HIS DECISION will ultimately decide the fate of the game.

Now, two hands are dealt: one for the spectator, and one for the performer. The game plays out in an exciting manner. Ultimately, it is a very close game. The spectator ALMOST forms a winning straight but JUST MISSES by ONE PESKY CARD.

The prediction is now read and it SUCCESSFULLY predicts:

1. Who will win the game and how.
2. That the spectator will ALMOST form a straight
3. The EXACT CARD that the spectator was looking for to complete his straight.

It’s a triple prediction which describes HOW THE GAME played out AND THE EXACT CARD that the spectator was looking for! It’s quite an impossible moment. Remember, the spectator could have decided to deal the cards from ANY POINT in the deck!

IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. The result is DIFFERENT each time. This means that PSI-POKER can be used in situations like walk-around, table-hopping, or on the streets.

2. There are NO GAFFS OF ANY KIND. This uses a SINGLE deck of playing cards and a SINGLE prediction ONLY!

3. NO POKER KNOWLEDGE is required. This has been designed to play for ANY audience. It will be fully understood and comprehended by poker players and NON players. If poker is your thing, then you can ENHANCE the procedure with appropriate terminology. It’s all up to you.

4. The prediction is not tampered with in any way. You hand it out BEFORE you begin and you NEVER touch it again. The spectator opens and reads the prediction.

5. The spectators DEAL the cards at all times. Once the effect has begun you NEED NOT TOUCH THE CARDS AT ALL.

What they are saying about PSI-POKER

"Extremely clever thinking, and a timely effect, given the interest in Texas Hold-Em.” --Tom Baxter (Canada)

"What a great routine. I think you have discovered new hidden properties of the @#%*!, and you have created something special.” --Peter Duffie (Scotland)

"What I LOVE about this is, it's as fair as the description. You have no manipulation over the deck at all AND it's a normal, standard deck of cards. The book is incredibly in depth and the routine is absolute gold. This could fit in from close up/ walk around to parlor or stage. It's a strong routine which really looks about as fair as you could make it.” --Jamie Daws (U.K.)

"PSI Poker is a fantastic idea. The game itself is very popular. The handling is so natural. I like everything about it.” --Steve Dusheck (U.S.A)

"I love it! A brilliant twist on an old secret. Would've never thought of it in a million years!” --Jason Messina (U.S.A)

PSI-POKER could well be the self-worker of 2011. You’ll have so much fun performing this. Texas Hold ‘em is a HOT topic, and PSI-POKER lets you relate in and AMAZE without lifting a finger. Anytime you have a deck of cards and a piece of paper (for the prediction) you are ready to go! The secret is one you already know (it’ ancient), but it’s just not been used like this before. Order now and amaze!

PRE-PUBLICATION OFFER:

Order PSI-POKER (ebook) by Jan 31, 2011 and pay just $15.00. The regular price of $20.00 will be effective Feb 1, 2011. The 22 page ebook will be delivered to your inbox on Feb 1, 2011.

I received this earlier today and have to say I'm very pleased. Ben explains this in his usual detailed manner. It really 'does what it says on the tin'. Haven't road tested it yet but I see this going over very well if presented properly. Thanks Ben!

I am really disappointed with this. First, the procedures involved only roughly simulate Texas Hold 'Em, so anyone who has ever played the game or even watched it on television will wonder why you have essentially made up your own rules. Second, the changes in procedure would be the exact sort of changes one would make if he were going to cheat at the game such as by stacking the deck. Nullifying these rules is likely to raise suspicion in anyone with more than a passing interest in the game and to suggest the method.

Third, even this modified procedure (the one described in the marketing blurb) will only work less than half the time. The remainder of the time, the spectator will have to take further actions which will only increase the suspicion (dramatically) and make the procedure even more removed from actual poker.

Finally, the effect described in the blurb is not possible. You cannot hand out a prediction before the effect begins and predict the exact card the spectator needs to complete his straight. Harris presents two different versions, each with its own trade offs. But the blurb ignores these trade-offs by combining the best elements of both into a single routine that is not possible to perform. If you want to predict the missing card, the prediction must be brought out in the middle of the effect, and you will be giving up ample pocket space, which takes this far out of the remotely impromptu range. If you choose the version in which the actual card is not predicted, you have, in my humble opinion, a far weaker effect.

If you are looking for a procedure driven prediction effect that somewhat resembles poker, then this effect may be for you. It was not, however, for me.

***, was hoping this was as good as it sounds, thanks Lumberjohn. I hear this has happened before with BH effects, although I hear he has very good stuff just not as the ad reads.

Hey Kyle, Lumberjohn covers what you are asking in his post.

I got my copy today.

And I must say I REALLY LOVED IT!

Ben explains step by step every single detail you need to know in order not only to perform this routine, BUT ALSO TO MAKE IT BELIEVABLE!

I read the instructions in the e-book and I felt wonder while reading, it made me feel clearly that sensation of: "someone took the time to explore an old concept and bring it to modern days".

I can clearly see all the effort Ben must have put in to bring this routine.

I personally enjoyed it very much, and I can see my self performing it very often.

The set up for this effect will only need about 2 min. if performing the first routine. and 4 min. if performing the second routine. I re-read the description of the effect in Benn's website, and it Is ACCURATE, I am sure that the description is EXACTLY what the SPECTATOR will perceive and will remember.

I am very pleased with this effect, it is very practical and easy to do. I Absolutely recommend it!

The official description of the effect, which is just above my post, is most definitely NOT ACCURATE. It states that the prediction will state "the EXACT CARD that the spectator was looking for to complete his straight." Point four states "The prediction is not tampered with in any way. You hand it out BEFORE you begin and you NEVER touch it again." Point five states "The spectators DEAL the cards at all times. Once the effect has begun you NEED NOT TOUCH THE CARDS AT ALL." It is clear from this description that the prediction is handed out before the performer touches the cards and that the performer never touches them again until after the effect is over. Under these circumstances, you cannot predict the "exact card" needed by the spectator, as the blurb clearly states you do. In the version in which the exact card is predicted, the prediction is set on the table AFTER several actions are taken with the deck, and specifically, after YOU handle the deck. Mr. Harris states in the manuscript "You can still 'imply' that this is the beginning of the effect, but it is a slight trade off."

To demonstrate, assume I were to release an effect with a description that includes "the deck is freely shuffled." You receive the effect and in the first paragraph of the instructions you read "Though the deck is stacked, you will need to imply to your audience that the deck has been freely shuffled." Would this be accurate? I don't think so, though it appears there are several on this thread that would find such a description completely accurate. I will let the rest of you decide for yourselves.

But there I referred to another issue as well, which is that the description leaves out steps that must be taken by the spectator over half the time that make the effect much less convincing, especially to someone with any knowledge of poker. Accordingly, only the best case scenario has been described. I wouldn't have as much of a problem with this if this scenario happened even the majority of the time, but it doesn't. As another demonstration, assume my effect description states "the spectator merely thinks of a card and you immediately state the exact card she is thinking of." You receive the effect, and read the following "The method is simple. You simply guess what card your spectator is thinking of. And one out of fifty two times, you should be right!" Would you feel cheated or that my description was accurate?

It is time to acknowledge that such descriptions are misleading at best. Forums like this provide a consumer protection function. We should demand more of the creators of magic, as we all have limited funds and should be given the opportunity to make purchasing decisions based upon accurate information.

Lumberjohn, you couldn't be further from the truth. Ben's description is accurate. The exact card needed to complete the straight is the Card. In a straight, you only need the number or face card to be accurate. I fear your background may be hindering your process. This is not meant to be an attack on you, and while your claims have validity, this is not one of them. Ben has done a good job with this. The following shows how petty we can get sometimes.

OUR LEGAL FRIENDS

At some time or other in our lives, we all need the services of an attorney. I have many precious friends who earn their living at the “ Bar of Justice.” I have asked a number of them just why lawyers, in their written documents, should resort to the use of a language that is only distantly related to good English.

One who hears or reads the oral arguments of a talented lawyer is impressed by its lucidity, simplicity, and force. But if one turns to the indictment, complaint, petition, brief, or other legal documents in the case, one is amazed to think that the two were the product of the same mind. The former is excellent ENGLISH and the latter is mere JARGON.

For example, if you wanted to give your friends an orange, you would simply say, “ have an orange.” But if you engage a lawyer to put the transaction in legal verbiage, it would assume this ponderous form:

“ I hereby give and convey to you, all and singular, my estates and interests, right and title, claim and advantage of and in said orange, together with all its rind, juice, pulp, or pips, anything herein before or hereafter or in any other means of whatever notice or kind whatsoever to the contrary in any wise not withstanding.”

And then after all this, the chances are that another lawyer may come along, and with more jargon of the same sort, take the orange away from you. So it is with our legal friends.

Steve
