I was always under the impression that this was frowned upon and might be detrimental to the Audience member chosen etc...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJNmhKMfSnI How do you feel about this?

Yes it is both frowned upon and potentially harmful. Personally I wouldn't do it; its not worth the risk. As usual though Derren gets a great reaction.

In my full trainings I REQUIRE students be able to do this. It give them an incredible feeling of their own success both as hypnotist and as the person hypnotized.
The video clearly indicates that it was highly edited. The person is supposed to be in catalepsy, clearly he isn't, and then suddenly he is. I have no way of knowing what exactly was done. IF YOU ARE TRAINED in how to do it, it is easy and safe. Still, I tell students not to do it because, when you're doing a live show 1) You generally don't have time to ask if the person has back or neck problems 2) Even if you do have the time to ask and get a response, you have no way of knowing if the person is aware of all their problems or if they're answering accurately 3) In a litigious society, even if you are fully trained and do everything right and the person has no problem before, during, or after the suspension, you still might get sued. It's not worth the risk. |

It's listed as a "prohibited action" in the model conditions for a license under the 1996 review of the 1952 Hypnotism Act in the UK.
Never bothered with it myself but I understand there are a couple of tricks which reproduce the same effect without any hypnosis whatsoever. One of my fellow New Zealand based hypnotists does it as his finale and his website shows him standing on a volunteer propped up between two chairs. Whenever people mention his show to me, I don't really know why, but it's the bit they talk about most. I guess that's why he still does it! |

I cringe everytime I see a hypnotist stand on someone. Especially a large man on a woman. I don't see the point myself. Ok it gets people talking but its pretty close to abuse in my humble opinion. And you have be a pretty average hypnotist if you can't get them talking about something else.
I think the 1952 Hypnotism Act is mainly a good thing. Its a pity not everyone follows the guidelines. |

I seriously doubt Derren uses hypnosis for that particular effect.

Well, if you're Derren Brown people kinda close one eye to it I'm guessing... Or both eyes if they're in deep sleep trance! Get it? (Hmm... I'm wasted on you lot... )

First of all the fact that he does ANYTHING where they are like that in the audience and not in his control when "asleep" is just stupid.
Watching that I was bored beyond all reason. Sorry. Having seen him Criss Angel himself to the point where I don't think he does ANYTHING without stooging it is tough to watch. As for the chair thing, you don't have to be in trance in the least to do that. You can stiffen up your body pretty easily.

Every time I see someone perform this I feel like giving the performer a talking to as my friend described it as "a lawsuit waiting to happen" but I doubt he came up with that quote...

There were a few attendants standing by in case anything were to go wrong. Nobody stood on him or broke a cinder block on him, as far as I recall.

I think it's a little naive to think that Derren would do anything which is going to put his audience in jeopardy. Plus there are several experienced people at the side of the audience as has already been noted... more for the theatrical effect rather than for actual safety I would venture!
Next you'll bve telling me he actually ot a spectator to drink a glass of vinager lol |

It is is sstill risky no matter how you dress it up. It put strain on someone that could lead to injury. I thought Derren did an amazing job to get the response he did from a simple stunt. Brilliant showman no matter how you look at it. But the stunt itself IS risky and is something I personally would never do. If something went wrong it would be too late the volunteer would be injured.

MP the next time I take you for an icecream I'll show you how to do this safely.
The thing for everyone to remember is that The Objective Team 'leave no stone unturned'. This is NOT stooged but neither is what you think is happening actually happening. James, the vinegar drinking stunt is an old favourite of mine and I've re-used it since Derren performed it. Of course it is e3xtremely possible for a hypnotised person to drink the vinegar (so I hear!). Bob B
