Hello All:
I'm refinishing a Stratosphere box - it's the box with a gimmick attached to one of the doors which allows you to vanish a ball in the box. The standard way Mak Magic has used was to rivet the gimmick to the door which is sturdy but the rivets show through on the outside of the box. Is there a glue I can use that will securely hold the gimmick? All parts have been painted so the glue will need to adhere to paint. My goal is to secure the gimmick without anything showing on the outside. Will standard epoxy work? Thanks for any help. I'm not very knowledgeable about glue. Ron |

I would rivet or screw the gimmick to a small strip of wood and glue this to the panel.

At least rough up the painted area with sandpaper before you glue it. Epoxy would probably work. I've had a lot of luck with "Leech F-26" for this type of glue job.

Yes, there are new types of glues that will hold metal to other material, but what you are doing will require the part to withstand vibration and the weight of the ball. There is a chance that it will not always hold to a painted surface. As mentiond find a way to screw it on.
You can try "PC 7 Epoxy" it is a clay like material that you mix 2 parts. I will hold such things as metal road signs. It can be drilled and sanded as well. This can be obtained at any hardware store. |

How about doing it the original way (with the rivet), but add a countersink so that the rivet heads ends up under the edge of the wood. Then smooth over the area with putty and paint.

I'd agree that epoxy probably would do it and that you should at least rough up (lightly sand with some medium grit sand paper) the paint surfaces you plan to glue before doing it. But, don't expect this to be a bond like wood to wood. Paint lays in a layer over the wood and can chip off, so it is possible that at some point, while your glue joint would hold, the paint wouldn't and chip loose from the wood. Best bet, carefully sand both surfaces clean for a wood to wood bond and use a wood glue. Of course this presumes the grains of both pieces run the same direction, otherwise you have a cross grain gluing situation and such joints are known to not be very strong.

Another option would be to rough up painted area and apply JB Weld Stik.

JB Weld is a great product, along with a clear epoxy (part A and B) that hardens in 5 minutes. These both can be bought at your local hardware store.

Try Gorilla Glue from Home Depot.
I've worked as a pro-woodworker for many years, and that stuff is quite amazing. Glenn

Thanks again, everyone. I went to Home Depot looking for some of the suggestions above...met a very helpful service rep whole raved about the Gorilla Glue like you suggest, Glenn. I tried it and it is quite amazing. Just to be on the safe side, I added a couple of wood screws that were short enough not to show through on the outside of the door, and the gimmick is now extremely secure.
All I've got to do now is add the final pin striping to the doors and I'm finished. I'll post some photos soon. Thanks again, everybody. Ron |

Which type of Gorilla Glue did you use? They make a couple different ones now.
