I am making a gimmicked wand from a dowl rod I got at the store. It is three feet and and inch thick, I have a reason for it's thickness. Unforchunately it may look odd so I am going to have some swirls or whatever lathed into it aroung the part I need thick. Even tappering it slightly. This may give an excuse for it's thickness and make it look thiner. Wondering though of the proper lenths for a wand so I have an idea of the maximum lenth. I was thinking a foot and a half as that is the largest I have seen online.

Jeremy -- if you are working from a stage, then 18" may be OK, if you can handle that length comfortably.

I have seen most wands at roughly 8", 12" and 17" lengths, but these are still arbitrary numbers. I do close-up and parlor work, and found that a 12" works best for me. Your mileage can and probably will vary. SETH

Thanks I am would use it in a number of environments. Any environment I would use the cups. I want to start using it busking though when I am done with school summer after next. So a shorter length would be good yet it is so thick. A inch thick foot long wand would look funny. Perhaps I should stick with the 15 not sure a 17 would fit my table top or even look appropriate on the street. As if it wouldn't look bad enough already. I don't need to use it busking though. I could always just limit it to stage work and make it a 17. Once I decide on it's lenth and make it. It may not be thick enough being off by 2/16ths of an inch or so. Then I will need to make another. Luckly dowl rods are cheap.

I decited apon a lenth and design. Eighteen inch mini pool stick wand. I couldn't leave it squared on the ends as thic as it was it looked funny. To lathe spiral into it or whatever with spirling it it would look like a wizard wand. This way it stays thic at the handle area for the gimmicked aspect and is still tappered so it is not to look so thic. Plus given the pool stick design it doesn't look like a wizards wand. I have a freind that can make it for me by Friday.
