If this is really "Mentalism" or at least " The new way to perform mentalism" , I quit.
I saw this DVD today.... pure rip offs of classic ideas. Not recommended.Read classic books and came up with more original ideas. |

At first I thought the same thing. But then I realised that 90% of the routine that Rich teaches us is impromptu. Impromptu magic is very common but impromptu Mentalism is pure gold to me. There is at least 3 routine in this dvd that I will add to my repertoire. And I really like the little ''extra'' at the end !

Well I've read 13 steps, anneman, prism, barrie richardson, chuck hickock some docc hillford too. From my point of view, the magazine test that he does with his business card is incredible, I have a poker routine that use the same principle as the one in the dvd and I added this one to close it. The security enveloppe routine was new for me too.
Please be careful when you say something about someone as I may not be a full time mentalist but I do know a great deal about the technique. If I get kicked out of the conversation when I give my opinion what's the point of keeping this forum online ? |

Read the classic book of mentalism is better..... The DVD it self is not bad actually, but the effect, method and presentation is just nothing new....... kind a bored to watch......

I would have never known this thread existed until it was referred to in another which had questions for me. I'm glad someone found some great value in the teaching. I'm a little surprised that well read mentalists would buy a DVD that clearly was marketed toward folks that do not have a large mentalism background and that are interested in taking their "magic" more toward mentalism. In addition, to say I read classic books and simply came up with "more original ideas" is exactly why many would find this quite worthwhile. Some find it easier to learn the basics in a DVD. Others prefer to read between the lines. I just hope it has introduced the concepts of mentalism to new, creative blood... and that many see the great opportunity to combine mentalism into an impromptu strolling magic venue.... as 95% of the folks interested in learning "perform". In fact, I'm a full time working entertainer and MOST of my venues are high end strolling events.
If this was a music forum and expert guitarist complained that there were no new chords or strumming, etc, it would make no sense. In the magic community, there is a slight double standard. Material must be made for the best in the business or it's no good... yet, the average guy wouldn't even know where to start if the material was something out of reach for those "disappointed". I'm impressed with the vast knowledge most of you have. I admit I know very little and have no magic library but have unique ideas to share none the less. There's many ways to learn and share. If you have something for me personally, I'm easy to reach. Let's not make it "personal" however. There's no need.

It was brought to my attention how this might have come across... My bad analogy was not intended to dismiss the crediting point... it was to point out the fact that not everyone is at the same level, etc.. The crediting has been thoroughly discussed in another thread on TIM2 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......tart=120 Regardless of reinvention, steps need to be taken to avoid fragmentation of history for sure. I'm 100% in agreement. I too am disappointed.

I'm not a mentalist, and I'm fairly new to magic (7 years), but whatever this is I LIKE IT! Fairly easy to do and it kills! I'm using several things from this DVD. I can't say that about a lot of DVD's that I buy!

I happened to have just finished watching this DVD, and as a mentalist, I have to say this is an extremely light bite. It is a collection of highly simplified bits and pieces from more comprehensive routines that have been around for decades and are taught in many other places. The fact is that, by extracting these methods and ideas from larger routines, you end up with quickie mental magic that doesn't have many logical disconnects, and the reveals are going to elicit, at best, mediocre reactions. That's my opinion. There is one decent routine here (business card / magazine prediction) and several that I'd rate as "okay." I have a bit of a problem with someone repackaging and marketing these ideas without putting any kind of original or creative spin on them, but this is a topic for another thread.
Several of the effects are not offered as a clear demonstation of telepathy or precognition, and should more properly be classified as mental magic. In one case there is a prediction which magically appears on a business card in someone's pocket. Not only is that not mentalism, it's contrary to what mentalism is all about. (I say this having started as a magician, back in the day.) So This is Not Mentalism, entirely. This is a product for someone who does not have much of a background in mentalism, in my opinion. Rich more or less acknowledges this above, so hopefully I am not stepping on toes by saying this. If that is you, this might be a solid purchase for you. The things taught here have value for an amateur getting into mentalism. (Since they are parts of many solid, classic routines, this would have to be the case.) For someone who has some background in mentalism and is actually out there performing, it is unlikely you will find anything new or useful here. The routine with the business card and the magazine is not bad, but it's not something a professional performer is likely to use. There is no reset and reuse possible. For a one-time effect in a close up situation, it's good. Most of my close up stuff is intended for strolling, so this would not be something I would take a chance on, as someone might have seen me perform it for another group. |

I'm fairly new to magic & mentalism (4 and 1/2 years) and have to say that I've seen a lot of crappy material out there. I've read (and am currently re-reading) Corinda & Annemann trying to pull apart the material so that I can use it on modern audiences. I bought this DVD a few days ago on recommendation and it's pretty decent, most of the material is old but that doesn't make it any less impressive. I like the Magazine effect, and word stack effect.
Fair enough some of the card effects on this DVD lack something (like the end of the card equivoque) but I've come across way crappier material than it. Rich gives ideas on how some of the older material can still be used today, and personally I think that this is what he attempted to do with this DVD set. So props to Rich. I've spent money on worse products. |
