I have seen Rick Thomas on Wold greates magic and he did a illusion in which he lifts a box (apparently light) and his assistant comes from the inside of it.
Any book or plan explaining this? Thanks |

Greg Frewin won world wide aclaim for something similar, if not the actual effect you are seeking, and it was absolutely staggering to see.
I never saw the world's greatest magic special you speak of, but it sure sounds like something Greg Frewin did before that. |

The effect performed by Rick Thomas is a different one than Freewin's. Both are great though Freewin's was more surprising.
Can't say I know of any literature or tapes on it though. Sorry...

"Shadow Box" any d*******e base or table will work along with some heavy stock paper or canvas, the frame work to hold the sheeting in place, and a light source.
PM me for details Joao? Still hunting down the music for you...~rr |

Rey Rey has thew right approach on this and could be done without too much effort. I will take a look at my plans and notes and tapes and see if I can find anything. If I do I can PM you.

.......... That was delevoped by Bill Smith Magic Ventures for Bob Higa and then built for Rick. Freewin's was a bodyload.

Zigmont is correct. I have also seen both performed live as well. Thanks for posting my friend.

Didn't some guy in the 1920's do a trick where he had a die about 12 inches on a side, and tossed it up in the air a few times, then it expanded to in midair to about twice the size. He catches the thing and places it on a table where an assistant pops out. I believe this was a DeKolta Illusion. Does anyone have the details?

Something like this could be done using an "S" type suspension....
The box needs to be just tall enough to clear the assistant on the platform of the "S" at the start of the sequence. Performer then lifts the box a few feet for the convincer; A. Nothing underneath B. Nothing as heavy as a human can possibly be inside of the box as it is lifted with relative ease I'll leave it to you to find a way to hide the riser on the "S". Very simple as well!~rr |

The Rick Thomas version makes use of the ladder by the side of the box as the cover for the gaff. Btw, the assistant had vanished into Rick's body beforehand in his "Osmosis" illusion. She's supposedly come back out from Rick's body behind the cover of the box. Rick uses a "women came from men's ribs" patter for this illusion, I kid you not...
Freewin's is actually different, he makes it look like he's going to do a bird cage vanish but instead, his assistant appears under the cloth... Both use slightly different principles... Hope that helps...

Pakar you are right in both instances and both use completely different methods. The bets bet is to experiment and research all methods and find out what works the best for you and your situation.

In case anyone is still interested... Andrew Mayne has published several variations on this effect. The exact illusion you are refering to can be found in his "Illusions F/X" book.

The illusion Rick Thomas performs is called Goon Box production.
It was created by Jim Steinmeyer. The illusion in the Andrew Mayne book is a different illusion and it was first performed by Paul Daniels on his TV show. If I'm not misaken I believe it was Ali Bongo who created this. |

Zigmont - do we really need to discuss the specific methods of peoples proprietary creations? Sorry but there didn't seem to be a need to discuss specifics.
