I've an old Hoyle Shell back: they still look fine (and work well). What's Your opinion on this brand of deck?

I don't know about the quality of Hoyle decks now. But back in the 70's 80's and 90's magicians didn't like them for performing magic with very much.

The back design is okay but I've never cared for the feel, kinda thick and lose their life in a short time IMO! I had some Hoyle Mavricks(?) years ago that reminded me of today's Walgreen Stud's, not too shabby!

I wouldn't exactly go into a 'card fanning competition' with a pack of Hoyles but having said that, I think they were Jay Ose's favourite card - so what do I know!

I always use hoyles because I get them cheap. They are thicker than bikes and they are often cut off center. That said I think they faro very nicely and I have come to really like the back design.

I like Hoyles but they do seem to die a bit quicker. I use them from time to time

Thank You for sharing Your ideas. I didn't know they were Ose's favourite...

I'm not sure that they where Jay Ose's favorite deck. Just because he was seen in a clip with Joan Blondel using them doesn't mean that Jay liked the Hoyle decks or that he even supplied them for the film of him and Joan being shot. I actually find it hard to believe that Ose would take the Hoyle decks over say Tally- Ho's or the Bicycle decks of that time.

Why? Well from that time period have you ever seen pictures in say the Vernon books, Marlo books, or Genii from that period of anyone using Hoyle cards? That's one telling reason right there.
If they had truly been that great magicians would have used them. True there was a time when a good many card gaffs where made with Hoyles. But not many magicians liked them at all. Yes I do know this for a fact. Even into the 90's it wasn't unusual to see gaffs made with Hoyle cards. Why they had been made with them is they where much cheaper have printed as gaffs than the U.S.P.C. cards where. But even tho gaffs where made from them magicians tended to stay away from them as they weren't very good to use. |

I don't find it surprising, as there are exceptions to every rule in what any group of "the best" (magicians, athletes, whatever...) prefer. Clearly, it seems that Ose is an exception. Could be look, feel, fond memories associated with Hoyle's - anything.
I imagine there might be an NBA star or two who would vote to go back to using the old red, white and blue ABA basketball :^)
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

The discussion is going beyond...Any thing that can enrich it is welcomed... Actually, is anyone using them at good profit?

Hoyle Shellback cards in the UK are actually MORE expensive than Bikes. What's the comparison in the USA?
Looking back (and from what I remember) Shellbacks were used quite a lot in the late 90's when an entire gimmicked deck was required - such as Diminishing Returns by Mike Powers and a few items of Mark Mason's. Did the USPCC have a block on producing actual trick decks in Bikes? I had a Diminishing Returns Deck and they handled okay - but needed treating with fanning powder. I've also checked out a deck this evening; it's probably me but a complete Faro is a bit hit and miss. Meanwhile, Hoyle Mavericks (which you can get more cheaply in the UK - when available) actually appear better cut? One final point about Hoyles; I have a Ken Brooke Trick from the 70's (Cervon's Poker Deal) made up from Hoyle Shellback Bridge. These have had roughing fluid on them and STILL feel as good as when they were treated 35+ years ago!

Cervon's Poker deal didn't use R.S. if it's the color changing backs effect of his I'm thinking of.
Again yes decks such as the effect you mentioned by Mike Powers had been made up in Hoyle shell backs. The U.S.P.C. didn't have a block on producing gaffed decks or cards. They just really didn't see the reason to do so that often. When they did do so they charged quite a lot to make them up as well as a minimum amount you had to order as well. Hence the reason that decks other than Invisible and a Sveangali or Blank (Nudest) decks you didn't see too many gaffed decks made by the U.S.P.C. Also I have never attacked you. I did state an obvious fact in my previous post however. Which is a fact and not based on false information. Your reputation by way of many of your posts proves that. |

Yes Dirty Deal is what I was thinking of. That is why I mentioned the changes of the backs. I was sure it was two different effects. but you never know sometimes.
