Hi fellow Vents;

In my future routine I plan on Mixing Ventriloquism with Comedy Magic.

This is the script I am working on now, The routine will have comedy props like a Card Fountain and Exploding Mic, a Wonder Glass and a Water Funnel.

I just came across a deal and purchased a gross (144) of 10” black plastic magic wands with white tips.

My preliminary plan is to use it for advertising. I am going to have printed labels with my name and business information and use the wands as a business card.

My question to all is, do you think this the best use of the wands, or would anyone have a better use of the wands;

Excluding sending them all to you.

Thanks for looking and assisting

Well now, you've just killed the only idea I had.
(not that they'd do me any good anyway since I can't do magic)

But Buzz,

If you give them all to us. . . we are the ones who could say nice things about you that you could quote to all the booking agents!!!
Don't rule that option out. I'm pretty sure Blueshawk would say something nice if you waved a wand at him, and I probably would to. Free stuff is inspirational - lol

Buzz,
Here are some thoughts...

Plastic wands with a sticker on them scream amateur to me. From all of your other Café posts, you are working to create a professional appearance using backdrops, stands, cases, props. If your information was imprinted, then yes, it would be a novelty business card. With a label, it is simply a novelty with a label. If you handed me one, I'd probably give it to the nearest kid, who would lose it in his or her room a day later.

Printing is very cheap when you consider the return that a nice business card or brochure can bring. I'd recommend you get a well designed, professional business card. It will make a better impression on the adults who will hire you.

For the wands, put your label on them with a link to a special page on your web site where people can learn a magic trick. Then give them away to people who help you in the show. You'll draw people to your web site AND the wands will have a higher value to them since they are only for your helpers.

JMHO,
Tom

One last thought - I'd definitely look for the gold foil labels if doing this. They will create a better impression than a cheaper white paper one.

Tom;

I am now designing business cards, It was always been my intention to have business cards; the wands I got are not that economical that I would give them out like business cards, they cost me about 45 cents each.

You’re correct; the labels are not a good representation of the level of my planed production. My evaluation of what you said and thinking about it being simply a novelty with a label has changed how to have it personalized.

What are your thoughts on having the wands foil stamped with my name and web site address; can you, or any other member of the café advise me on a more personal presentation.

The labels are out.

Thanks for the great feedback

Steve;
I can’t read your post; what you wrote shows up on my computer screen all fuzzy and splotchy. I can’t understand anything…something must be wrong with your keyboard

Ha! Thank you, I will do that, and for a very good reason. Back when, I would save the business cards of other vents when I could get them, not that I had a lot, I wouldn't bug people for them, just take them as I could get them here and there (though when I went to the convention, I sure was tempted to ask everyone for one).
One of those wands would definitely be an interesting addition to the collection.

As for a thought about using them, I would save them for people you really feel strongly are likely to get you bookings. They would also be a cool something to give people if you have them come up from the audience to help you with something. Or make like a rock star with their guitar picks and toss a couple into the audience as you're walking off.

Not only will I send the wand, I will send my business card as well, the cards will take a little longer.

As for your recommendation about giving the wands out, the first two I think are very worthy and I am putting the suggestions at the top and definitely do that; excellent advice
The suggestion about tossing the wands; the wands have ends and are heavier than a pick.

I think my insurance company will ask me what I was thinking while paying off the claim for the end of a wand landing in someone’s eye lol

Don’t throw the wand; you’ll take someone’s eye out

Yeah, that is a little different than a guitar pick.
Glad you like the first two ideas (they were the real ones, the rock star one was kind of tongue-in-cheek).

The foil stamped impression would be very classy and definitely say professional.

I just purchased an Executive Production Briefcase on the Magic Café’s Tricks & effects for sale or trade; my plan is to walk on stage at the start of my show and pull a large round glass fish bowl from the briefcase with names and have Dan read it, then present a wand to a audience member; good idea, or not?

Depends. How do you manipulate Dan while you are pulling out the fishbowl? Or does he come out after the bowl has been produced?

I am thinking about positioning the table I place the briefcase on right next to Dan’s table; Dan is already waiting for me.

I enter open the latches and lay the bag down, open the top and pick up the fishbowl, then show the inside of the case, close the case and place the fishbowl on top of the briefcase and pull the name, I am talking the entire time, introducing myself, Dan etc; then place my hand in Dan and let him read it; Not 100% practiced yet, but this is the first draft of it.

What do you think?

If you believe that Dan has to be brought out and not sitting on the chair, my alternative would be to place the fishbowl on top of the briefcase, retrieve Dan, place him on the chair and introduce him etc; then pick the name and have Dan read it.
What approach do you think is better?

If it were me, I don't think I'd leave Dan in sight and immobile for so long.

Buzz,

Rule No. 1. NEVER let the audience see you put Dan on. Rule No. 2. Never have Dan (or any figure/puppet) just sitting. In the audiences mind he must always be on when in sight and always moving. Remember Dan is ALIVE. If he is just sitting, he becomes a dead dummy dependant only on you for movement and speech. Yes we know that is true, but NEVER give the audience the chance to not think of him as a living breathing character that they love. Never put him on in view of your audience. All good vents will allways lean over behind a trunk or reach behind a curtain to put their character on. That way he is always ALIVE.

I should have been more specific;

“my alternative would be to place the fishbowl on top of the briefcase, retrieve Dan from a case, make him alive and place him on the chair, introduce him etc; then pick the name and have Dan read it” how is that? better?
