Nice looking routine - Probably not as clean as his previous spellbound but depending on the price it's probably worth getting to have a closer look at some of the moves he's using. I really like the toss up change - No idea if it's original or whatever but after seeing the trailer I immediately had a go and showed it to my wife (Normally very difficult to impress) and she thought it looked awesome. That's good enough for me! Having not seen how this routine is actually done I'm not sure I'm doing exactly the same way that he does, although I can't think of many ways to achieve it, but if you haven't had a go I suggest you do because it isn't particularly difficult and it looks very nice.
I didn't really like the clean up and the end but hey, you can't have everything and it's easy enough to substitute something else. ~ Pete. |

Sean,
Thanks very much for your reply. You're right. But it's really mainly the quality of the new demo itself that has me concerned. Laurie |

@Laurie: As with all his previous demo, I did not see the lack of quality. You can't treat the trailer for his DVD the same with all the demo videos he had
If you look back before Ponta decided to release the DVD, you'll see that all his video had that same quality / feeling So I would say no. He did not get a little complacent |

Have you considered performance in your evaluation of quality at all? I'm thinking Ponta's not the only complacent one and perhaps he knows it. Complacency, on either side, concerns me. Laurie |

I don't know if complacent is the correct word (mabye) but I do know that my response to the first Spellbound youtube was a never forget it magical moment, for magicians, as pointed out above lay people are not impressed. I truly was not able to work out how all of it was done. Now having seen the DVD and being more familiar with his methods I was less "shaken" by the latest demo, did see the occasional flash and feel that what seems an eye level deep back clip move is may not fly. Since you know how difficult his stuff his you find yourself saying if he did not do it flawlessly on the demo what chance do I have. Still an amazing talent, who am I to say but I would think "among" the best anyone has seen at this type of coin work.

Nope, that's not my reason. I haven't found a word other than complacent to describe allowing the new demo to stand, to sell, having performed even the first effect, as is. And that's as far as I'm going to go here.

I think it looks like Ponta has put on a bit of weight. But I'm not judging.

I think the question I've raised here is a valid one, as it concerns the art, performers themselves, and those who regard them as "masters".

I had tried to purchase Anitya directly from French Drop. Ponta's response is shown below. Evidently he will be issuing a new DVD with additional material.
The question is will the DVD arrive on the market before the Frenchdrop site is translated. "Hello Joe, I'm Ponta the Smith. Thank you for your interest in my new trick. Unfortunately you can't buy it for now. I'll release new DVD including Anitoya this year. Could you wait until then? Thanks Manreb,
that's something to look forward to. In music it's always the difficult 'second album. The idea being that the first album contains allthe best material that you've developed over the years and refined, whereas the second album is material that you've had to develop since that time. I think this is going to be a real test of his creativity and that's really interesting (to me anyway). He really one of a kind. Did anyone see the EMC 2010 performance where he comes out with the huge hat on. He reminded me of a guitarist walking on stage, doing his stuff and blowing everyone away, then casually walking off like it's all in a days work. Never saying a word. He's definitely got some mystery about him, from the way he performs and moves his hands down to the way he dresses and looks. Even his name makes you wonder a little. Anyway, best of luck to him on that difficult second album... Kind regards Sean |

Sean I have already watched this video over 20 times..
I wasn't familiar with his kind of work. Yesterday I bought his "Sick" dvd.. That guy changed my point of view in coin magic.. I'm going to need very very hard practice to learn he's moves.. It is absolutely different to everything I know..

Ponta is an interesting/intriguing fellow and new player on the scene that's for sure. His work is uncanny and quite unique to say the least (And the least has been somewhat alluded to it seems). Don't really understand all the chatter here about what he's not or whatever, you can't hit homeruns everytime up at bat no matter how good a hitter you are. To expect such is truly "interesting" IMHO. This new work by him is very good and I expect that whatever package he puts together with it will be jaw-dropping stuff, definitely not your run-of-the-mill parlor magic, not that anythings wrong with that if that's your cup of tea. I have seen his EMC 2010 performance and I was not looking for flashes (I saw some) or mis-takes, etc. but mostly saw what this guy presented himself as, a most unique individual and coin worker "Emerging." Heard word back from it that Ponta was stunning and amazing, and quite probably the most gifted coin worker around today. Dai Vernon said something like that once about David Roth I remember.
Perhaps sometimes the overall presentation of materials loses something in translation, physically and mentally. You would have to look far and wide for a performer like Roth that is so comfortable in presenting magic the way he does. There are many that can do this stuff quite elitely but the smooth presentation might be lacking somewhat, or something might be lacking. Perhaps the performer might go a bit too fast in making the magic happen in person than he does teaching it on a DVD. Perhaps the guy's work is frustrating to some because it is so technical and takes real dedication to master like a good Japanese Puzzle Box. Also, perhaps differing juxtapositions of things just don't sit well (thinking maybe of the big hat he wore and the slight bop of confidence in his step) with some people as they want it the way they know it and best appreciate it. Perhaps I digress a bit here but I can remember watching something years back now with my kids and loving it for the perky music (and still do to this day) but mostly for the great lesson it taught, or something like that. I don't know but it was "simply" magic in it's deeper meanings of the "appreciation" of things to me. *Check here beginning at about the 3:20 mark and enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKj1JDZKZks&feature=related

Ponta's Sick DVD changed my perspective on coin magic, you either love it or hate it. By that I mean, you either practice your butt off or don't. It has inspired me to work harder, longer, and made me a better coin magician. So I thank ponta for this.
I've been practicing the vanish for a year now, 3-6 hours a day, and the transfer is looking more natural. It was only a matter of time. It's not as good as ponta yet, but its getting there! The 3 fly is also almost presentable. MB, Ponta has told me how much he likes you as another magician. |

No luck.
My Japanese friends even took care of the transaction but the download would not connect for some reason.
