Ony;
The Manila Grill sign looks very modern and very easy to transport, it’s too short for my needs; I like the sign on the podium in your poster, it’s what I want to do, have my name on the stand. Is that I sign or a video? |

Buzz,
The "podium" you're referring is not a podium but my vent case/stand I made based on Bill DeMar's case. Uncle Bill's made from wood, mine is from aluminum (to make it more lightweight). The name and sign on it is made from tarpauline which I just stick on the face of the case. |

Buzz,
Newbie advice alert! 1. - VentHaven is worth planning! Don't think about it - do it. It will open your eyes. You will learn first hand things that will improve your skills and show. You not only get to see the top vents in the business, but you have access to them and everyone is extremely helpful. The goal of each convention is to help you improve. On top of that, you become an active part of the community/family. Like Steve, it is now an annual event on my calendar. As a pro, I turn away work that week. I can't recommend this highly enough. No matter what your level - VentHaven is the place to be this July. 2. - This was probably passed along before. If so, it is worth repeating. Video tape every rehearsal and show. Video will capture things you can't notice in a mirror. Then watch it. 5 times. First, watch the whole thing - are you happy with it? Does it engage you? Or are you having trouble watching yourself? This is the audience experience. Next block off you. Just watch the puppet. Does it stay alive? How are the movements? Could lines be funnier with a "look" by the puppet? If the puppet doesn't keep you focused - it won't hold the audience. Third - watch just your lips. How is the control? Need some work? Are there expressions you could make during the show? Lip control doesn't mean a still mouth - you could be smiling, frowning, straight faced... try them. Fourth - watch your whole self. Are you engaging or just standing there? Are you focused only on the figure, or working the room? Your body language and focus helps create distance from the figure and gives the illusion of life to the character. Finally - watch the whole thing one last time - does the voice sound different? Is character maintained? Where can you punch up a joke for a bigger laugh? Any dead spots? Take your notes and absorb them - then set up your camera and video tape the improvements. Review it the same way. This takes time and effort - but if you do the homework - your show will be worthy of the audience's attention and the client's payment. Tom |

Tom,
I am very seriously considering the convention; my main source of income does not come from being a ventriloquist; I have three other businesses I oversee. Summer in San Francisco is the busiest time of my year; I don’t want to just say to you and not be truthful, I am really going to try… really, I do want to go. I practice lip control and vent voice every day; at home, in my car, whenever I can. I am going to use a mirror and Dan to practice with a video camera, starting next Monday; I am so new that for me holding Dan correctly with moving the levers for mouth synchronization along with my lip control while in front of a mirror; I am getting tired too quickly. I try practicing now, but I need a table to place Dan on; my table will be here on Thursday, or Friday. While my lip control is improving; I am not improving my stage performance; I need the table. Tom, thanks for taking the time. |

Buzz,
Not to hijack the thread away from the original topic - which I have - but to continue with this conversation while I'm thinking about it... I probably started vent later than most here. I managed the lip control in front of a mirror, but lost it the moment I hit the stage. Too many things to concentrate on AND trying to entertain the crowd. Practice as much as you can - but realize it takes time to get comfortable doing vent in front of the audience - even if you have stage experience. With practice, and shows, (lots of both) you will get there! Tom |

Tom's absolutely right.
It's like riding a bicycle. At first you have to spend entirely too much of your concentration time staying on balance. After awhile, though, it becomes almost second nature. I imagine it's like having speech therapy to correct a stammer or a lisp. For a long time it's a matter of concentration. After awhile your teeth and lips and tongue have figured out the routine. Being "in the moment" is still important, but not so much a chore as in the past. -Philip |

Tom and Philip;
Your 100% correct, I agree that the first time I do a show it will be a disaster LOL. I have tough skin. So what I am going to do is perform my first shows at the Sunday School at my church; I have already talked to my Pastor and have ordered Gospel routine books from Clinton. I can do my show in front of 2 to 4 year olds and they don’t care how much I move my lips. I will include all kinds of distractions to keep them happy. I feel this is the best way to get control of Dan, and practice my routine and various actions. Any additional thoughts on my idea? |

That was a valuable lesson from my mentor (Ken Groves) when I started. It isn't always easy to do. I followed it religiously for the first year, now only if I am working on something new. I should probably start doing it again - see if I can raise my game!
