Absolutely agree, there. If you say, pick a "totally different card" they will always pick a different suit. If they don't (and it's never happened to me) say what Shrubsole suggests. It's really a complete non-issue

Massive hang up? Where? I was merely pointing out an observation from the vid clip, in that it appears that the spec(s) have a completely free choice when that is not the case, that's all. Like I said, fantastic effect.

It will happen a small, very small % of times and it's an easy work around and should fly by without question. Pegasus is accurate in his statement of not entirely a free selection. But about 95-98 times it will be.

I mentioned this last week in a PM that using 4x6 photos of my own for the reveal (for me) gets a much better reaction. The wallet photos just don't have the same "realty" and bang for the Prestige moment. I find using my own close up pics is better than the generic photos that come with the set.
As others have said (and I agree) getting people to choose different cards is relaxed and easy...and never a problem. If you want to use Protea's for a similar 2 card reveal - why not just buy Carshark's Double Decker instead? No limitations with 104 cards - perfection. But to me Cataclysm is just lovely as is.

Brian Caswell has made a solid effect that delivers what it promises. Simple to do, its very easy, a no brainer, the audience follows along with no problem, and the photo and the end just simply floors them. They can pick any playing card, change their card, you can do for one, two, or three spectators. There's a special bonus effect using the BIP book, I myself don't have, but it goes hand and hand with the effect if you choose to take it a step further. The card photo predictions is enough to get em all warmed up for more magic, if not its a solid stand alone effect. I say its a great buy and worth the money. I give it a solid out of 5 smiley faces.

I have to agree. Cataclysm seriously rocks.
I have the Armageddon Edition -- with lots of bonus materials. But you know something? It's really muddying up an effect that is simple, direct, easy to do and lays spectators right out. When I'm doing close up show, I am already headed out loaded for bear -- tons of stuff on me...so I use the wallet sized cards and have had no less a reaction than I get with the bigger ones. It's an utterly wonderful effect that can be played for laughs with a huge HOLY C*AP ending...or a massive mental miracle. My second...maybe third...favorite Alakazam product. This one has a no-brainer presentation and a deadly finish. Lots of opportunity for byplay. Can be customized for special occasions or corporate events. I am officially smitten...and I am hard to smite. David

So do you generally show a sloppy display of all the backs as described in the DVD to casually show the numbers? I sometimes forget to do that - which I guess really doesn't matter. Also, do you do a f***e shuffle of any kind at the very start?

I have used Cataclysm for quite some time now and it genuinely does fry em!
The real beauty of Devestation is that there is only one out as opposed to 4 with Cataclysm. I personally have never had a problem with people selecting 3 different cards when performing Cataclysm. I simply say something like: 'OK pick another card, totally different number and totally different suite - make it difficult for me!' As the spectators don't know what is coming they don't know what to expect - so it really is no issue. When performing Devestation I start the performance by just showing a small sealed envelope (that contains the photo) without any explanation and without speaking a word I silently place it on the table, bar etc then simply go into the routine - and then as part of the reveal at the end of the performance I again silently pick up the envelope from the table... it seems to work well. Also and importantly I now always have the very last card in the deck as the final force card. This is due to the fact that during a recent performance the spectator choosing the 3rd and final card waited and waited until I had got to the very last card in the deck - then chose that one... You live and learn!

As far as they are concerned, you've adequately demonstrated that all the numbers are different and each card has a different number. I don't want to draw any attention to the cards after this. It's an unnecessary risk in my opinion. No shuffles either...for the same reasons listed above. The numbers simply aren't important to the spectator until the end. The beauty of this effect is that they will be looking for all the wrong stuff until the very end. By then it's far too late for them to figure it out. David

The d**k sw**ch is as easy as pie! It has to be as I'm next to useless at clever ones.
But it's so easy that I don't even call it a d**k sw**ch. More like a d**k change. I do Cataclysm and as soon as the third card is selected and before I even get the photo out, I put the remaining cards back in the box as if tidying up and put them in my pocket. All whilst looking puzzled and saying that there is something strange with the 3 cards selected (or whatever your routine does at that point). That done I remove the photo and finish Cataclysm as usual. It can end there if I want or if going into Devestation, you pick up the 3 cards from the table and get out the Devestation deck, ad the 3 cards to the top and continue from there with Devestation. So not even a move. Just doing what you would normally do.

I build my own deck but using a different method. Take out a folded photo and put it on the table.
Spread the deck from left to right while asking a spectator to touch any card. Do this for another two spectators. All random cards. They turn the cards, see the numbers on the back. They unfold the photo, they're an exact match. For those who have Cataclysm or Phil Deck will know exactly what method this is.

Cataclysm and it's many near relatives are all good - but to me Cataclysm itself is ultra fair, very clean, allows the chosen cards to be handled, is tough for a spectator to back-track, and is just plain sweet.

I heard that there is a stage version on the Armageddon Edition. Can someone here tell me about it a little bit? I want to perform the effect in my stand-up act.

Presumably, If one were to buy Cataclysm Armaggedon and the devestation deck, you would also need to buy the devestation download?

I have the Devestation Deck and honestly never used it (bought the deck from Alakazam). If anyone is interested in it PM me... I think that Cataclysm stands strongly on it's own and I love it. Always gets great reactions.

The Devestation download (which I also have) is part of the package - you could make up your own deck with the information given but it would be a pain as you would need lots of decks to make one D Deck. It was easier to buy it.

Just performed Cataclysm for the first time.
Total jaw dropper, so easy to perform but totally blow the spectators away. Looking forward to making it even stronger with a BIP book. |

This is an old topic, but I recently learned this trick and have one question. When you hand make your own set of cards, how do you avoid any spectators noticing small discrepancies between the numbers on the chosen cards and those in your prediction photo?
