Hi!
I recently get a "fraidy cat rabbit" in a auction and I Love the prop. I think to add it to my kid show, but what do you think is the best age for this effect? Thanks, -H

I have been having a stage sized Fraidy Cat rabbits for about a year. It is a beauty. This is just me, but If I'm doing a kids show for a particular age group I would do it for kids 3-9. If I were doing a show for 10 and 11 year old, I have plenty of other stuff I like better, but, you can still fool this age group. With a mixed audience I do not think it really matters. Older kids shout out; "you're turning it around," a lot quicker but then that is what you want them to do so that you can really surprise them at the end.
You will have a lot of fun with this. |

It's one of my vary favorite props. I agree with the age estimate previously indicated by Wizardpa.

I just saw Chris Capehart kill with it again at MATB. I think it works best with 5 to 12 year olds. You want them intelligent and alert enough to "catch" you turning the prop around. He was working in a 2,000 seat theater.
I never liked the larger version for the reason I prefer Fraidy Cat over hippity hop rabbits. The normal size is easily worked in the hands. Hippity Hops almost always require a table. The stage size is to big to hold and if you sit in on the floor it is not as easily seen. The regular size is much more versatile in that you can hold it and move much easier with it. Richard

All ages. It all depends on how it is performed to the crowd. Age is just a number.

Dynamike, I agree presentation is everything. You must learn how much to milk it and how to milk it out for the age group you are working. Sometimes, you can get the adults to enjoy it just by having the kids really involved.
Again, Chris Capehart is the master. I have never seem anyone get as much out of Fraidy Cat (including Gene Gordon, himself) than Chris. If you get chance to watch Chris work, do it. Watch what he does and how it does, then understand it to adapt it to your performances. Richard

Although this prop is obviously intended for children, I find that the reaction it gets from adults at my kid's shows is surprising. I figure if this is fooling adults it will obviously fool older children as well. I just think they would be insulted by the prop as seeming too childish. I think the presentation I am currently using diffuses that. However, for older children I would choose something else over this wonderful prop.
So I guess to answer the original question I would say 3-8 years old. Children 9 and up would probably prefer something more suitable for an adult audience.

I generally perform for 4 to 9 and family audiences. I use it in almost all of my shows except my wizard show.

I’m really struggling to get a good reaction from Fraidy Cat Rabbit.
I added it to my routine Late December and it’s just not getting the reaction I think it should. The routine is fine until the final reveal where I show the back of the rabbit and it kind of dies there. Can anyone suggest some patter for the end of this trick? |

After all the bits about the other side and turn it around, I ask (or pretend to hear) if they want to see his "back side"? (pun intended.)
'Well, here's his backside, (showing the rabbit's tush) and here's his front side, and here are the two doors." I get a lot of laughs and gasps of surprise. |

I quite like this prop but I think it could really do with a face lift. The graphics on the ones I've seen for sale have a very old fashion feel to them IMO. Perhaps Chance could have a go at giving it a more 21st century look!?

I think the graphics are fine to be honest. They play very well from a distance. I like Chance's work and I am sure that he might put a different twist to this.
Any adaptation to this effect would need to be done by Abbott's or Phil Wilmarth who owns the rights as from Gene Gordon via Karl Norman. Phil gave exclusive rights to Abbott's to make this effect. Richard

I might add that every time I see Chris do this effect, I pick up something else. I have been fortunate to see this probably a half dozen times. Chris is such a master at adapting, you learn something every show as to the conditions presented and how he works with them.

I have the original version and a new version. Both of them work equally well.
The original were probably made by Karl Norman who made tons of them for Gene. Richard
