Folkmanis has a lot of hand puppets that are very well made, cute & appealing, and not at all expensive. They are "silent partners," no vent skills needed. I use a madhatter hat for my rabbit and have developed a routine based -- loosely -- on Dell O'Dell's "Out of my Hat." (Now that's an oldie!) Roxie eats carrots (pitching the greens on the floor), throws balls for her dog friend, flirts with people in the audience, throws a deck of cards all over the place, and finally comes up with the chosen card. The possibilities for funny antics with a puppet like this are endless. And although most people in this thread are thinking of using puppets for kids, trust me, adults love this stuff.

Hansel,
Tom Crowl just published a great learn vent website. He makes it extremely easy, step by step. Check it out. The first 5 lessons are free.. http://www.learn-ventriloquism.com/ Bill |

My Doctor of Laughology programs are very puppet heavy. I use things from socks with googly eyes to 3 foot double airplane controlled roller skating marionette. Like magic, puppets can be simple. It is the context that we use them.
Axtell has some great information on animating a pupppet on his site. The rocky routine (David Williamson)that many magicians use, is just starting to see what a spring animal can do. No you don't have to be a vent, most puppets I use are not ventriloquized.(though I am told my technique is good) I like to set it up as a comparison after one of the earlier puppets point out that while he talks, my lips are moving. Size of puppets are sometimes important. For preshows at libraries, while the crowd gathers I use the 3 mice in a box. My wife has put sunglasses on the mice. They come out while I sing the 3 blind mice blues along with some blues riffs on my harmonica... Using my other talents with my puppetry, works for this nearly normal entertainer. Harris still 2 old to know everything..

I don't want to "toot my own horn", but have you read my book "Kidshow Ventriloquism"? I cover a wide range of topics on how to use puppets for kids. Just a thought..

Mark's KSV book, helped me even though I had been in the biz awhile when I read it.
I am amazed at the creative process shown by Steve P's. work. It was back in the late 70's when I took the Maher Course. I also mentored under Emiline Dobbins doing the mall thing for a few years. Finding a local puppeteer willing to work with you might be helpful for your jouney. Harris

I have Mark Wade's book and 3 DVDs. All good stuff. The DVDs are not only instructive but just plain fun to watch for entertainment too.
I also have Steve Taylor's 3 videos and have talked with him on the phone several times. All good stuff too. Steve has been very helpful and encouraging on the phone. http://www.stevetaylorpro.com/ventriloquism.htm Thank you Mark and thank you Steve! |

I am a ventriloquist now, but I started out using an Axtrax CD with my Magic Drawing Board. Steve has quite a few to choose from. Many magicians that are non-vents use the "whisper" technique for their puppets. It seems many use the rabbit-in0the0hat puppets in that manner.

There's a white rabbit in the hat puppet routine that magicians have been doing without vent for years. You throw a bunch of cards into the hat the rabbit is sitting in and after a bit of byplay, the rabbit finds the selected card. You could use alphabet cards for kids. The rabbit has moving hands rather than a moving mouth so no vent work is involved.

Marks books are amazing. Colin's DVD is a must have. We have several resources for how magicians can get started with puppets without being a Vent. Check these out...there is a lot of info here:

For those interested, you can see a preview of my DVD Let's Get Visual here. It includes a full 8 minute Axtell Seal routine without words from the puppet, only seal noises (easy to produce without ventriloquism). Even more valuable than the routine itself is the instruction on making every puppet routine effective, funny and engaging for the audience.

Hi Mark,
I used to be an agent in Columbus, so I called you for gigs once in a while, but if I remember right, you were always booked up and not available, so I never booked you. That speaks to how good you are. Mark's da' man.
