Hi all,

I'm thinking of pitching decks whenit gets a bit warmer and am looking at what to sell. I've got the deck and 2CM, but am also looking for a book of tricks to add into the mix too. Does anyone know of a good pitch book or have any other ideas on stuff I could lump in?

Add a "Magic Wiggle" from Pockos in the U.K. and stop there. We have talked about this a thousand times here.Be a pitchman NOT a magic shop.

John -- If you are talking about a pitch book for the Svengali Decks, like the "101 Tricks With a Svengali Deck," you should be able to pick them up from the same source as your decks.

However, in my experience, the books do not sell well, either by themselves or as an add-on to the deck. Plus, the books aren't that great, in my opinion, since all they really do is show you 101 ways to reveal the selected card (actually, only about 50 ways, since a lot of the "tricks" are almost duplicates of each other). If your decks come with decent instructions, they will provide about ten different tricks, which is really plenty.

And I also agree with Don, the Magic Wiggle (Magic Worm/Fuzzle/Squirmle) is the only other trick you need to sell. In fact, I have found that it usually outsells the decks by about 5 to 1 or more. But in any event it is a great attention-grabber, and it will draw tips like moths to a flame. Then the rest is up to you! SETH

The only noticeable thing the book does is make the package "bigger", thus to some weak minded people "worth more". The books cost about a dollar, you'd be better off getting something else for the same price (or even cheaper) instead.

All the local magic shops sell them with the books ... but they don't pitch them ... at least ... not like we do. I tried selling them with the books, but it just didn't seem to work for me. You would be better to print your own "book" consisting of a piece of paper folded in half or something - much like the sheet of instructions Don Driver uses.

This is how you use a Svengali pitch book. First you need to display the regular sheet of instructions. Just the one leaflet on legal paper, preferably. The bigger the better. Marshall Brodien had a good size leaflet of instructions for example. You want something that size for maximum effectiveness. Now the book is an entirely different product separate from the cards. You either give it away free with the deck as a "lump up" (no time to explain the expression) or try this. Sell the deck for say seven dollars, show the big sheet of instructions and emphasise the twenty or twentyfive tricks described. The instructions are a major sales point that never seems to be mentioned anywhere. However it is very important. Now when you get a ten dollar bill, you hesitate a bit as if you have just thought of it and say the following. But before you do remember that under no circumstances do you give the change yet. Just hold on to that $10 bill for dear life.

Now say, "Oh, I don't know if you are interested-you may be-but I have a little book here which sells for $3. It will give you more detail on the pack and 101 extra tricks you can do with it. Do you want the book as well and make it an even $10?

Remember YOU ARE STILL HOLDING ON TO THEIR TEN DOLLAR BILL WHEN YOU SAY THIS. Remember that possession is nine points of the law. A good 70% of your punters will just give in and say "OK". They don't want the hassle of trying to get the change from you when it is obvious that you are in no hurry to give it to them.

This works. THAT is how you make use of the pitch book.

If you haven't talked to Don Driver about pitching Svengali decks you haven't talked to the best person still living that has pitched them. That is a fact.

Is Don Driver still "living" as you term it? He hasn't been seen for a while. Perhaps he has gone to seek refuge elsewhere. Perhaps a monastery since I know he is a very spiritual person. And I am not sure he is the best anyway. Will Roya has assured us all that he is and who are we to doubt such a sterling example of modesty and decorum?
