Rules? Maybe requirements. After all, those who broke ground in our art broke whatever "rules" they came across! And, it is an "art", and therefor honestly does require a different mind-set than "ordinary" or "regular" magic does. It's the difference between the two that makes it what it is.

Well stated DAVID! I attended my first Mindvention convention this past year and I did see some mentalists with an elitist attitude towards Magicians. It is not better, just another type of magic. In my opinion, mentalism is actually harder to present well.
This is why a bad magician can sometimes perform a good trick and look good because the trick is good but a bad mentalist is a BAD mentalist no matter the effect. Jamie

If there is a rule in Mentalism I think it should be the famous "Just Do It"

Coming from a background of 20 years of comedy magic, there are some magicians (I said SOME)who have little or no respect for mentalists either. I don't say that to start a pi****g contest. On the contrary. I think most magicians consider mentalism an off-shoot of magic if they think about it at all...which they don't. (Does that make sense?) Since I've been telling some friends in the magic community about my interest in mentalism I get responses ranging from polite interest to one guy who literally sneered and said "Mentalism? Why? Magic getting too tough for you?" The attitude annoyed me...but I DO understand it. Only mentalists seem to draw a STRONG distinction between the two disciplines. I don't believe magicians do. I just understood the difference between "mental magic" and "Mentalism" myself about a year ago. It honestly never occurred to me that there was one. I think someone with a background in performance of magic has certain skills to bring to the table. But the advantage those skills offer is significantly offset by the amount of UNLEARNING a magician has to do in order to present mentalism. Magicians literally have to learn a whole new performance method -- a totally different presentation method -- and a different chemistry with the audience -- or they wind up being a magician doing mentalism...not a mentalist. It's ok to be wrong. Tell yourself this over and over. It's ok to be wrong. The mentalist can get 3 out of 5 things right and be successful in the minds of his audience.
As a mentalist you are not a card master. When working with cards you don't need to do a one handed shuffle. Just mix the cards. Don't go out of your way to look clumsy, just mix the cards. It is never a trick. No matter what you do it is never a trick. As a mentalist you are a mystery performer. I believe it's fair to say most people here have seen David Blaine perform. How many times have you seen him just look at the spectator when he was done or just walk away? He didn't go the laugh, he didn't say it was just a trick, he left them wondering. He left them with a mystery.

David there will always be some ill feelings towards other forms of magic by those that do not do it. At least I am not a box pusher! Ha Ha JK I am a box pusher too with a mis-made flag!
