I've thought briefly about getting a wireless CC machine for people who have no money, but still want to tip.
People in general are much more likely to pay for things with credit cards than with cash, so... yea. |

The tech is almost to the point where I would consider this, but not yet...
Right now I'm happy with the old saw line "sure I take credit cards... Usually straight to Best Buy. I don't give them back, but I take 'em, alright!"

How about using a QR CODE so people with a smart phone can find your website and paypal account with just a quick snap and click? Jon Allen had one at his lectures so people could pay by paypal if they had no cash to hand!

Interesting and timely idea. There were times when the dynamic of dropping a coin in the hat was bigger than the show. I still remember feeding coins to a trained monkey when I was a little kid in 1960. I was so delighted I couldn't stop. My parents were so delighted they emptied there pockets.
Flash forward to the "70's and you could still make a living off spare change. In NYC, passersby would drop change in a guitar case without stopping, if the musicians were good. You were pleased just to hear some good classical, jazz or blues as you passed. Slowly, people stopped carrying change. Now people have stopped carrying bills. A lot of venues where people do have a little discretionary time, they don't have discretionary cash on hand. So many festivals and fairs are by admission and everything goes for tickets. It would be interesting to see how you could expedite and enhance the experience of tipping the performer electronically. It would have to be quick and secure. Novel and entertaining would help.

Ivan, Gaddy, linking e-tips to a website is good. How about a hand out or effect to create a link for them?

Quote: I understand what you are saying here, but I'd like to take a moment to add that, while it's easy for magicians to see everything in terms of a new effect; however, I think that when it comes to soliciting money, simplicity is the best approach. Add value and content on the flyer ($$$) or the website (less $$$ if one is tech savvy) side all you like, but keep the invitational message simple. On 2011-02-04 16:44, joe yang wrote:

I understand Gaddy, you may be right in your thinking. I always test my thinking in the field. Sometimes I find things work despite the conventional wisdom.
The market place is switching from a cash economy to e-commerce. If e-commerce is the future, can we enhance that experience and get more? In the past, street performers found ways to use the collections process to stimulate spectators to give more. Trained monkeys and bottle boys come to mind. Like it or not, street theater has a commercial aspect. How commercial we make it is a personal choice. Phillip Petite is the best performer I ever saw. He was an artist. He was also the highest grossing perfomer I ever saw. He had that down to a science. I would love to work out an electronic transaction that would encourage hits, an e-monkey! LOL

If there was something like the thing that charities use, where you just text a message to a certain number and it automatically adds ten bucks to your phone bill (which goes to the charity), that would be killer. Nothing for the payer to sign up for, nothing to download, just send a text and done. That would be great. If it were cheap and easy to set up on the performer's end, you could have different numbers for different amounts, almost like voting on American idol, or something (5, 10, 20?).
I wonder if you'd get a lot of non-paying, "I'll text you!" walkoffs, though. More walkoffs than usual, I mean, due to the fact that it makes it easier to lie. -Travis |

If you use Squareup don't enable tipping:
"For example, you sell an item for $10. The customer contacts you wondering why $14 appears on their statement instead of $10. Not to worry, this isn't actually an overcharge as the amount is pending and no money is actually moving around. In a few business days, the extra 40% will fall off unless your customer actually put a tip in. Should a tip be added, the funds will settle to the proper amount in a few business days."
You know why don't act naive.
