"I read minds - I don't improve them."
How wonderfully patronising of you! Thanks for showing your real persona of self-importance and imagining that everyone who doesn't follow you is wrong and requires your improvement. And you wonder why that bad attitude gets some people's backs up? Boy oh boy oh boy!

I followed this thread for quite a while now - and I have to mention that I'm really amazed by your ability to give a false colour.
As soon as you realize a different opinion there seems to be a kind of conditioned reflex to react with labelling those remarks as 'patronising'. Not a proper way of dealing with criticism or even just different opinions from my point of view. With that said I think that declaring a remark like the one you quoted as 'bad attitude' is rather funny anyway. Boy oh boy, ... |

Oh so 'some' mentalists have decided that unless you are conning grieving people into believing that you are really talking to their dead loved ones or that you really have supernatural mind reading powers and not using any method or technique, then you are not a mentalist?
Funny how all the exact same people do in fact have to employ methods and techniques to do what they do. And even funnier, it's only they who get to decide what others are and can call themselves!

On one hand, we know that it's inadvisable to give attention to troublemakers. It wastes our time and encourages them further.
On the other, if we stand by and watch them harass some of the best contributors to this forum into leaving then we're partially responsible for their departure. This is our loss, and the troublemaker can easily move on and make mischief somewhere else. Luckily Bob is big enough to rise above this nonsense. Hopefully for the rest of us his patience will continue. If it doesn't - well, at least a few of us can continue sensible conversations at the other place. I'll just say this: when you see someone making clearly antagonistic statements, or asking questions designed to cause a fuss, you can choose to ignore them. Your lack of response does not mean you agree with these statements. But if you see troublemakers picking on friends you can offer support. That's not bullying. T. EDIT: Written but not posted before Sid's post above... |

This thread has become unfortunate.
I thought it was going to be kind of fun, I thought it was interesting how different some of the routines where that some of us picked and having another way to think about all the interesting ways to present menatlism. Oh well.

It is amusing to me that many who claim not to be "real mind readers" instantly wish to tell other posters "what they think" by taking snippets of posts and redefining them into one's own myopic view. Everyone has a desire to be more addept at reading othe rpeoples' mind as a way of reading their own mind more effectively. Performance magic, both conjury and mentalism, are but a minor part of human interactions of which "effective mind reading" is a requirment. You 'real job' requires you to read the minds, intentions and needs of your boss, co-workers, customers and salespeople. Every peformance in which you pretend to read the minds of other should sharpen your ability to do so in real life.
As a mentalist you may pretend to read other's minds. Just what is it that you are pretending at? If you do not believe it is possible to actually read the minds of others then you are not "pretending," you are fantasizing. Conversely, intereracting with other people and learning how they think should make of you abetter "pretender." So, the proper response to another person who offers a different opinion is , "Thank you." Saying, "you are wrong, or silly or old, etc" is just a demonstration of the unwilling to learn how to read other people's mind. Learn to do it in actuality -- then learn how to pretend at doing it.

{thoughs hands up} Gentlemen Please!!!
I know that this will be my first post on this forum, but I have been watching for a while the path that mentalism is taking. {bows head} and it saddens me to see this, this is why it's a dying art. {looks up} those who do not understand will never get the picture {sincerely} there needs to be more respect for the ones that have come before us. RESPECT THE ART!!! |

1 - A tossed out deck
2 - A multi spectator pendulum test to "tune the minds" with the people randomly selected by the deck 3 - A book test with the most in tune spectator using an atlas instead of a book 4 - A sudden impression reading based on something from the atlas reading by calling out to the audience That's enough and it works well.

I'd be very happy just performing only one routine perfectly! And being that the case, I think it'd be Bob Cassidy's Jazz Mentalism. And to add another routine, I'd like to perform some metal bending too.
Maybe someday... |

{turns to Davit & smiles} I do have an ointment for that itch sir.
{lights pipe} I think what I was getting at in so many words, {takes a puff} is that there are proper steps in becoming a "Proper" Mentalist. You have to crawl before you can walk, and walk before you can learn how to run. {puts out pipe} but that's a thread for another forum. Kindest regards, DM. |
