Hi Manal, I have not seen a post from you before; It’s very nice to meet you; are you a Ventriloquist?

I had to look that up, and you're right. Give that Mr. Bean a pair of glasses and the same hair color and you'd have this figure's human counterpart.

Thank you for the welcome. I am not a ventriloquist , just a fan. At the age of 9 or so I received a Charlie McCarthy figure for Christmas which came with an instructional record by the fellow that had the Farfel dog .
I used to see Dany ODay and Farfel on TV as well as Paul Winchell and his crew.I loved watching WC Fields movies especialy the one with Edgar Bergin. My dad had the old radio shows on cassette tape and I listened to them alot.
I am 50 now but used to see vents on TV all the time growing up.
Nice dummy ( or is the proper term figure?)by the way.

Forgot to mention I am a wood carver and would like someday to attempt carving a figure.
Anyone know of a written source or tutorial for wooden figures. I have seen the online directions for the other non wood type.

Manal,

Go to http://www.ventriloquistcentral.com and look around there. Or go directly to webmaster@ventriloquistcentral.com and talk to Steve Hurst about that question. He has written a very comprehensive book/DVD on that very topic. Don't remember the price off the top of my head, but it seems that it was very reasonable. Plus he will work with you (live) if you hit any snags in the process.

disclaimer: Steve Hurst is also our webmaster

Thank you (and you can call them whichever you choose - around other vents, I usually say "figure", around non-vents, I say "dummies" or they don't know what I'm talking about).

Once upon a time I was gathering everything I could find written about making a vent figure, carved and non-carved. For carved figures, the very best I ever saw was nothing more than a small, I think 12 pages, little "booklet" or pamphlet by someone who is well known for carving very nice figures.
Now the devil of this is, I can get the name to come to me. I went and looked at my copy of the pamphlet, and he doesn't have his name on there.
I will work on it and try to come up with the name, maybe if Matt-24 pops in, he can help, I think he either did, or was going to order a figure from this maker before.

Dave are you talking about Brandt Gilmer? His pamphlet was rather small about carving figures.

Brant doesn't have a website, and the only way to get it is directly from him, but in another thread here in this section of the Café, I found Matt_24 had posted his email address, but that post was in 2004, so I don't know if it's any good, but you could give it a try: brangilm@adelphia.net

That's it. I knew he resembled someone famous! I mentioned Stephen Colbert but Rowan Atkinson is right on. That's exactly who he is.

Ah, makes me think of Black Adder...
