I see what you're saying, R.E., and I agree with you 100%. Recently on my blog, I've been revisiting The Vernon Chronicles, and I've been having similar revelations; Vernon was a master, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been improvements. For example, Out of Sight, Out of Mind. It's no doubt a classic for a reason. It has a simple premise, and is relatively easy to perform. Plus, it's just a great effect. However, the distribution procedure, the actions you must go through to determine the card, and certain facts like ending on a double turnover, leave me cold. Since the original, there have been great improvements to all those problems that I've preferred much more.
Nostalgia is one of the biggest detriments to the art. |

Thanks for the interest. My blog is thebottompalm.tumblr.com . Hope you enjoy it.
I know I won't be in LA anytime soon, but I appreciate the offer. Come on down to good ol' Kansas, and we can cad around town in our Model-Ts. |

I'm in. better yet, let's make it at the magic castle. short notice for a trip from kansas, I know; but this week has been an especially dazzling lineup of performers. just one example: in the close-up room, steve valentine is so technically skilled, but also able to fill the audience with constant delight, that it's a bit daunting to contemplate all the work behind that level of proficiency. among the more exalted art forms, only music has a similar aspect; plenty of great literature, for instance, has been produced by pure genius but far less industry. that's what makes this a cool thing to be around. and hanging out with like-minded people gives it vitality. let's meet up some time.

I'm going to be out at the Magic Castle tonight. You're right; it is a great week to visit the Castle.

ARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH! This excellent topic has been moved to the DECKLESS section! IMO, removing X cards from a standard deck to do a trick does NOT make it a packet trick!
Oh well, obviously just my opinion! MMc |

Greatest twisting of all time is "King thing" by Gary Kurtz (my opinion).

Wayne Houchin has one with only four cards in the Art of Magic DvD.
The dvd in itself is interesting because various performers such as the Buck twins, david regal, and others share their viewpoint on what magic is and how they got into magic. |

I have always liked the Classic Twisting the Aces, here is a video of me doing a mix of the classic with a little bit of Wayne Houchin touches.... The second effect got messed up... Tell me your thoughts and critiques.

Paisa23,
I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing it. My one thought is that you might slow the routine down a bit, to let the effect sink in a bit more. Your handling is so smooth and convincing it's tempting to go fast, but this makes it harder for the spectators to follow. But what do I know? I'm a relative beginner. In any case, I have a "Twisting the Aces" video that I made and linked to in the "New to Magic" area in response to someone looking for a performance of this effect. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt4Yk2xn6mI Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jason

Jason I like you routine, Nice Elmsley, yeah I did mine quick but it was because we were waiting to be released I usually do it slower. Plus my Soec is Camera shy so didn't want to loose his attention.. Thanks

Thanks, Paisa. I can't tell you how many little tweaks I've given my EC. I'm glad it's looking good.
And I totally understand the need to speed things up in a situation where you're dealing with reluctant spectators! All best, Jason

Here is the "twisting" routine that I am currently using. It is based on a Nick Trost routine, but I changed the method almost entirely.
