What would you do if you were booked at 4pm at a house in the backyard for a b-day party and noticed another magician was booked the same time next door in the back yard also? And neither neighbor wanted to take their party in the front yard.
That has never happened to me. But I have seen magicians booked around the same time as me in a hall. It never came to a problem because we were in seperate rooms. |

I feel you handle it like a professional. You are scheudle to perform and to entertain the kids and that is exactly what I would do.
I might ask the client whether we could change the location of the show and tell her/him that it may be less of a distraction for the children if they did this. I would leave it up to the parent to decide where they would like the performance to take place. I think that is about all you can do. mention it to your client and see if they agree with you on the distraction level. In most cases they will agree with you and try to accomodate a location change.

I've had it happen in a large hall, all that separated me from this other guy who was entertaining at a party was some thin sliding doors that split the hall in two. I did my 2-Hour fun filled party with music, games, and magic show. He was an old guy who goes out cheap, he had no PA and I did, my kids had a great time, I saw his kids peeking through the gaps to see what mine were laughing at. My booker got what she paid for, his learnt what happens when you book a cheap act

Emaz said an important thing here. He mentioned that he still gave the client exactly what was promised and exceeded their expectations.
He could have very easily been frustrated or annoyed by it. But instead, he handled it like a pro and did his show as he always did. He must have known that his show is good and the kids will have fun. He has confidence in his abilities to entertain and he gave the people what was promised. Nice job and well done.

I've turned up function centres where I have had to compete with other performers in ajoining rooms. Luckily, the other performers were no good so they made me look good.
I once did a Magic Santa Claus gig and when I turned up there were FIVE (yes five!) Santa's at the park. Again, all the other Santa's were Uncle Albert in hire suit so the kids all liked me more. |

I guess it just goes back to always be yourself and do the best show that you can do. Treat the client and the kids right and do a fantastic performance. The rest will fall into place for you.

No need for a PM at all. I think you are 100% correct. That is the perfect reason to treat everyone at the event the same way regardless of who they are. You never know who you are dealing with and who might be your next big client. Your absolutely right.

I don't see the problem Dynamike. It just sounds like you were presenting with an opportunity to shine. Do that same fantastic job you were going to do (even if the other magi was not next door) and at the very least you will give your client what they paid for (an enjoyable show) and possibly you will be so impressive like some others have mentioned that you will pick up the neighbor as a future client.
Because you know the neighbors are going to talk over the coming days/weeks and compare the performances and respective reactions. Just my two cents. |

You can't really worry or control the other entertainer that has been hired. The ony thing you can do is the best show that you can. Do the show, make yuorself shine in the eyes of the client and most of all.. make the kids smile and have fun.

If you know the other performer, a bit of co-operation as to frequencies and timings can be discussed so that both parties are a success. It's one of those things that would have to be dealt with at the time. it may be the bookers have deliberatly organised it like that as part of a feud, to try and spoil one sides party. Your priority must of course be to your clients kids.
