Is anyone aware of a C&B routine based around The Vessel With the Pestle, The Chalice From the Palace, and the Flagon With the Dragon?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS75NtlH3gI Has it been done, has it potential, is it a dumb idea? |

It's been done, and it's not Danny Kaye's. Danny's is the remake. It actually goes back to Eddie Cantor. It was in the film "Roman Scandals."

I can't find any trace of the Eddie Cantor connection on the internet but I did find out that there was a similar scene in Bob Hope's "Never Say Die" which is believed to be the inspiration for the scene. I never knew this wasn't original for "The Court Jester", thanks Bill.
Bill, do you know if a verbatim or similarly scripted C&B routine has been recorded or published, or have you seen one performed? |

Eddie's line wasn't the chalice or the pestel, it was; "The one without the parsley is the one without the poison." Maybe that's why nothing is showing on the net?
My chop cup routine is scripted around poison but not a comedic version or anything based around this skit. Bri |

Thanks Bri. I'm dumbfounded that the origins of such a famous scene (Kaye's daughter said he had it recited to him in every restaurant he ever ate at for the rest of his life) aren't referenced EVERYWHERE online. I trawled through movie sites and googled Kaye and Cantor to death (or so I thought). Curse my google skills!
The reason I ask is someone on another forum mentioned an Okito box with a dragon lid and "flagon with the dragon" flashed into my head. A little later I started wondering about cups & balls, and where better to ask? |

Maybe you need to learn how to select key words. I admit that I have an advantage, having actually seen "Roman Scandals" many years ago. Nevertheless, I couldn't remember exactly which movie Eddie Cantor did the routine in. I did find the references within 30 seconds, though. I used "Eddie Cantor poison routine" (without the quotes.) I did not use Roman Scandals, because I couldn't remember which Eddie Cantor movie it was in. But the Danny Kaye routine was quite obviously inspired by Eddie Cantor's. If it was inspired by Bob Hope's routine, then Bob's was inspired by Eddie's. Eddie's is from 1933. Bob's is from 1939.
If you are using Google.co.uk, switch over to Google.com. There will be different references. Sometimes I use Google.de. Bear in mind that if your ONLY source for information is the internet, you are going to have great difficulty in finding specific items. You really almost need to know what you are looking for. Applying Sturgeon's law -- 95% of everything you look up will either be irrelevant or completely untrue. The internet is NOT the sum total of human knowledge.

What a great video clip, a true classic!
I wonder if Danny Kaye has been properly credited with being the first to use a high-powered magnet for PK effects? |

Actually, the video clip doesn't show the entire Eddie Cantor routine. He develops it later in the movie.
