Hi Guys
We have a hypnosis show booked in 3 weeks time at the University and we wanted to mix in some stuff to really freak out the students. I am working with a good friend of mine who will be taking the lead on the hypnotism while I will be spliting up the acts with some other sruff. I am planning to do needle swallowing routined with wayne houchins 'thread' and sean fields 'saw' ending it by pulling the last needle out through my neck. Looking at doing a needle through arm on a hypnotised subject and I have a few other ideas such as the simple use of a staple gun with paper and some blood. I'm looking for more ideas along simular lines, obviously they have to be quite straight forward to learn given the time we have before the show. Wondering if you guys could help any? |

I think this is the wrong area (if you hadn't guessed based on the not so subtlye replies). Most bizzarists, I believe, are doing theatrical, story based magic. It is often dark and occult themed and even uses some of the stuff you are talking about (blood, etc), but what makes it bizzare (IMO) is the story and theatrical context.
For example pulling a thread through your neck (that's saw right?) is not inherently bizzare. Well, I mean, it IS bizzare; but it's not inherently bizarre magick. If it was framed around the story of the Salem witch trials (as I attempted to, semi-successfully last halloween with rope through the neck) it would be bizarre, or any other interesting story ( a variation of Sir Gwain and the Green Knight perharps?) Personally (some would disagree), I think that a bizzare piece is a wonderful compliment to a most magic, mentalism or hypnosis shows but there is such a wide variety of presentational angles (which is basically what bizarre is) that without knowing what your going for it's very difficult to recommend anything. Some basic plots are: ancient spells, objects of power, parapsychology, sad/scary/funny stories (that happened to you/a relative/ a friend), evoking demons or ghosts. From a bizarre point of view I think the first questions would be what type of emotional impact would you like to have and what is your 'character's' or you persona's' history, beliefs, skills, etc.; these naturally lead to routines that many of us would be happy to point you towards. All thabeing said, if you have a dramatic flair already, you might want to start checking out the volumes of Pentalogy (by R. Shane, available at lybrary.com as One, Two ...etc, through Five). There are a lot of strong effects that are technical simple and can be adapted to your show. They all require some good storytelling.

I was thinking more about stuff that I do and glancing through some stuff that I do. Based on your description I can't really think of anything.
Most of my bizarre stuff deals with occultism, it seems to me that an occult experiment (eg. a curse or divination) wouldn't really fit in your show, what do you think?

Seadog,
Thank you so much for your posts, I do appriciate have a positive response from someone and actually did find your post helpful. Funny enough we had talked through the idea of doing something simular to what you were saying. We were talking about explaining that there is another 'spiritual' side to hypnosis, which can have an effect on both the hypnotist and the subject and cause strange things to happen. We discussed posibly having a spirit cabinet style routine with scratches and wounds apearing on my body and other supernatural phenonmenon. But we were unsure how the audience would respond to this especially the subjects involved with the show, we didn't want anyone feeling so scared that they wouldn't come back. So the general idea at the moment is to have it my character just come out of the stage and do a bizzare stunt in between the hypnosis acts, it kind of be a social inept attention seeker who would get verbally abused by the hypnotist. This is our first ever show, and have the opportunity to take a regular slot there if it works out, which will give us the opportunity to develope the show and try different stuff out! However without having that experience we were thinking to be sligtly on the cautious side (this may may be the wrong approach, I don't know). My concern is to try and produce the best possible show possible without doing anything that will put people off too much. Anyway, thanks again for your thoughts on this one, I do appriciate them!! |

Oops, I didn't get passed the joke.
Stigmata from paper crane would be awesome (I think, I haven't tried it out in performance). It could easily be tied into hypnosis and occultism and be very powerful. There is a bunch of cool stuff there.
