I was interested in learning some impromptu routines. I believe Mr. Cassidy has an ebook of impromptu mentalism routiens which is available at lybrary.com which I have not yet obtained. In addition to Mr. Cassidy's ebook, is there any additional resources for impromptu mentalism routines?
Thank you in advance for your help and courtesy. Michael

As long as you have some papers and a pen, I suggest you Richard Busch's "Peek Performances"... Ok, it seems like this is the only book I know but no... I really like this book. If you have a chance give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

Go to http://www.searchthemagiccafe.com/ and type in "impromptu mentalism". You'll see a few results.

Robert,
It is called "The Impromptu Psychic" available from Lybrary.com The following is from the introduction from Lybrary.com. After reading the introduction again, this book appears to suggest that these routines appear to be impromptu when presented but are not really impromptu. From the introduction: "Seemingly impromptu mental effects are among the strongest you can do. The apparent lack of preparation is what makes them seem real. But never forget that it is the illusion of impromptu, and not its reality, that gives such effects their impact." "Impromptu" does not mean unprepared, nor does it refer to the ridiculous notion held by many that to be truly impromptu the effect must be something you can do anywhere, anytime, even if you happen to be totally naked. Impromptu, more sensibly, refers to the effect on your audience. The effect should either SEEM to have been improvised (the illusion of the first time) or to have been an apparently spontaneous happening. Peter Nardi and Marc Spelmann's Unexpected DVD is full of great impromptu material

Here is another vote for Nardi's and Spelmann's Unexpected. There are some really nice impromptu routines.
Also it is good to learn some impromtu technics you can use everywhere e.g.: Equivoque (there is a nice document by Docc Hilford and if you don't mind literature in german language search for wonder man fred's don't go where the road don't go) Or learn a center tear (here in the Café are some threads about good sources on this one) |

Docc Hilford's 'E'voque' is perfectly impromptu and one of the cleanest versions of this type of effect you will see, although there are many cunning and interesting variations around. If you had to have just one thing you could do on the spur of the moment, this would be a reasonable choice.
In addition to the people mentioned above, Lewis Jones also has some very nice ideas in his books e.g. 'Seventh Heaven', although they contain a range of other types of material also. |

Deckequivoque (Quinn) and Prevaricator (Redford) are two very good impromptu effects!! Been getting great reactions with each recently.

On Colin McLeod's Opening Minds DVD-Set there are some really nice impromtu effects on DVD 4. My personal favourites are the Albertest which is a method for predicting anything with a stack of business cards as well as the bolder business routine which is Colin's version of a drawing duplication based on an effect by Patrick Kuff's also utilizing business cards.
There is also one nice "by-play" effect with business cards I like to use from Mind, Myth & Magick that is called Cardblanche. |

On Max Maven's Multiplicity there are several routines that can be done impromptu or close to it. And it is a great expose on Equivoque and multiple outs.

There are a few great ones in Paul Brook's 'The Book of Lies', and several other of his ebooks such as Juxtapose, One in the Hand, etc. If you're into energy work and suggestion routines, there are a lot that haven't been mentioned: Numen's version of The Abnormal Lift, Gerard's Energy Bill, Bill Montana's ethereal mentalism works, and many of Jerome Finley's works.
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

Impromptu:
Are effects WITHOUT any preparation, things you can do on the spot with only borrowed items and if needed proper audience management! Seemingly Impromptu: Are effects that need preparation or need you to carry a special something! Both are equal to the audience and I love them both! Fact is that for the mentalist/magician it can be a big difference when buying an effect advertised as Impromptu that really is Seemingly Impromptu. Especially when a time consuming and inconvenient set-up or reset is involved or when it´s needed to make time-consuming preparations or gaffs. There is nothing wrong with Seemingly Impromptu I only wish this was stated more clearly in books and especially advertisements. I´m a big fan of Bob (I own almost every video and DVD on mentalism and his ´Mental Miracles´ is one of the best!!!) but as Bob stated I do not 100% agree. If you refer to an audience while using the word Impromptu I do agree and there is no difference between Impromptu and Seemingly Impromptu BUT when advertising or describing an effect, the information is directed to mentalist/magicians and is there a big difference. I wish in the future all writers and developers will use the right terms to be clear to avoid uncertainty and confusion… Best wishes, John |
