I know I have an issue of either Genii or Magic that has Touching On Hoy in it by Luke Jermay. Anyone remember which issue?
Thanks Peculiarone |

I do not own any issues of those magazines that have touching on hoy. however I do have the book 3510 that has the largest compilation of ideas regarding the effect.
Im sorry I cant help you on which magazine to look for, but just as a heads up, if you do want to learn as much as possible about the effect, I strongly recommend you buy 3510. |

I would also agree about 3510! Chris Carter's contribution on how to use the Touching on Hoy principle is brilliant and shows how this simple idea can be transformed into something even more amazing than Luke's original handling.

Peculiarone, I originally saw your post several days ago however I was away on the road and not near my library. I had thought someone else would have answered your question, but I guess not. I have returned and wanted to let you know that you are looking for Magic magazine, the March 2007 issue (Tony Clark cover).

I think it is in his coral fang ebook. He also discussed this in his lecture video.

Does anyone here hit 100% when doing Touching on Hoy?
If so, can you tell me where you live, and what types of audiences do you work for? I've seen the different ploys offered in the post-coral fang manuscripts, and I just can't count on it consistently. JF |

I've never had a problem with it failing me when executed properly from a performance and audience volunteer selection standpoint. I live in Las Vegas but perform nationwide primarily in corporate, college/schools, the fairs and festival, and tourist/resort markets.
I have not read Coral Fang though. |

I've witnessed Luke Jermay performing his Touching on Hoy on three separate occassions and only one of those times did it hit 100%. He is a strong performer who knows how to deal with misses and failures. T. on H. is mind-blowing when it is performed with confidence and mastery. My hat is off to Luke.

I perform this all the time. And I never miss. In fact I have a no miss method if any one is interested hit me up.
However, funny story that actually happened today. I performed this effect just earlier today in Sydney at a private function, and for some reason, the lady who was believed to have thought of a year, actually thought of a year.. and I was actually correct!. And she even confirmed it to the audience for me. Talk about a participant not following directions and it actually going in my favor!

That was my issue with this type of 'audience management.' The audience has nowhere else to go but 'well, the were handpicked audience members, he must have wanted that particular audience member for a reason.' I prefer to be able to turn my back, toss a paper napkin over my shoulder, and get the audience member completely randomly. This is when TOH is tough, due to the need for task oriented people who are kind of with it. I'm in Houston, Texas, and many audience members are incapable of following a simple instruction like thinking of anything in the world. Literally, I've had 6 soccer moms in a row tell me that they just can't think of anything in the world. It's easily the scariest thing I've ever witnessed. We're walking around in the world with these people driving 3000 lb. vehicles. Scary! JF |

You have a point there.. BUT... I can honestly say still, that I never miss.. even though it was a close call! But hypothetically, if she were to say a different year, and I appeared wrong.. It still would have worked out great, because it would still disguise the method even better. Plus if I read two minds out of three, while simultaneously receiving their projected thoughts, It's quite impressive. I would then have the two people's thoughts I read sit down, and Isolate the person I missed with, and go into my next routine and read her mind and I would still come out on top! Simple Solution.

Hi Brandon...
But, you're backpedaling to compensate for a miss, still... This is as powerful as I've seen it impact an audience... (see the end of the video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UluD8KShiug Touching on Hoy gone right! Make sure and have your volume on and listen to the audience response to the walking away. But, my favorite way was to be packing up my show while the three spectators were seated, and be walking away to my car, still in view (it was an outdoor event) and revealing the 'three' things while already leaving. Very impactful. But, I just can't count on TOH consistently in my part of the world. People are just too incapable of following simple instructions, like the lady who said the date. I need to update my video, since I'm using Inconceivable now instead of TOH. JF |

I know you're trying to make a point Jimmy but Brandon is correct.
He and I were both at a workshop with some amazing thinkers and a foolproof method was very briefly but brilliantly described by one of magic's greatest thinkers. I'm not suggesting that Brandon is using this same method but it exists and people use it. best dave

Hmmm, I guess Jimmy and I have a different definition of never than Dave and Brandon. Which definition do you guys use?
For me, never = never. So giving an example where it could of missed, then saying "if she were to say a different year, and I appeared wrong.. It still would have worked out great, because it would still disguise the method even better" is a huge cop-out. I mean, if I totally missed on a trick, that would certainly disguise the method since the trick didn't work. Isn't that pretty much self-evident? That's a miss to me. Period, but since it isn't to you guys, please, please, please explain (not the trick, but how never does not equal never)? And, for the record, I've talked to Luke about this trick, emailed back and forth with him, and even received this section of 3510 about a year prior to publication. There are many great approaches, this isn't about that, it's about what I pretty much see as a bald-faced lie and/or wildly different definitions of a very basic word. Lem |

As with any effect that involves a spectator's willingness to participate and follow instructions, there is ALWAYS going to be a CHANCE that they will NOT pay attention, or may even intentionally not follow your instructions.. THAT is completely out of our hands entirely! So by your definition, that would mean there is NO such possible thing as a NEVER miss effect! However, not accounting for idiots that don't follow directions, NEVER is 100% accurate. So again, on method, were not talking about a psychological force potentially not being received, we are talking about audience management now.. two different things.
