What are your thoughts about doing Kevin James' Bowling Ball and Cardiographic in the same show?

Would it be too much sketchpad?

I think it really depends on your presentation for both. If you can make each effect vastly different in the way you perform it, then it can work quite well.

the other way to go is to use it in a sketch pad themed act or show. If your show is all geared towards art, then doing skecthpad based effects would make sense.

Hi,
i think that if you could perform the bowling ball production as an opener then apparently use the same pad later for cardiographic it would help make the pad look a little more inocent in both cases

I like Phillips suggestion. That way it appears that the pad is just a pad that does some really cool magical things. Even if you make a switch of the pad, that could also work. Just as long as it appears to the audience to be the same one in the beginning. Nice idea Phillp. =)

Here's a couple of suggestions...

Open with the bowling ball.

Use the pad to write something on during the show, to keep track of it. Some mental effects work this way; find one that fits the comic theme you've established.

Later, do Cardiographic.

Do things that don't use the sketchpad in-between the other three effects. That way your whole show doesn't revolve around the pad, which could get tiring after awhile.

I have a cool idea that may really work well for this. It just came to me. Why not have an easle that this sketch pad can rest on. You come out in beginning of show and do the bowling ball bit. Then throughout the show, you flip up the next page and it shows the next trick or effect you are going to do. This way it acts like a vaudville show sign and gives the pad a purpose for being in the show. Then later on you can perform the cardiographic with it. Everything then ties in well.

Just stumbled into this forum for the first time. Just passin' thru because this is not my area, i.e., children's magic. But a question: why would Cardiographic be considered for a kid's show?

Phillip is right. I do not think it is the trick that makes it NOT a kids show trick. It really is what you DO with the presentation of the effect that brings it into the realm of a kid show. You can almost take any effect and make it good for kids by how you present it, the patter you use etc. I think Cardiographic could work great for kids if changed around a bit. It also does make a great hand out for the child with your contact information on it as well.

I wasn't going to do cardiographic but Ed Alonzo's version of Jack in the Box

Also, I could have posted this question on any forum, but i decided to post it on this one because it is one of the ones I visit most often.

It is not necessarily a question about kid shows

I think Jack in the box works very well for kids and ties in really nicely.

It also ties in a lot more with the Bowling Ball production, that way. You don't have to have them pick a card, rather you just continue with the flow of the show after the bowling ball production. You can even perform everything to music.

How about a rabbit popping out from a hat?

I really like this idea!!!

Anyway, I would not use both effects in the same show, I mean there are soooo many great effects.

I think the spectators will confirm in their minds that the pad is gimmicked. But maybe I am wrong, this is just my thought.

Phillip:

I have been performing Cardiographic for many years, and have been opening with the bowling ball for about 10 months. What I do is produce the bowling ball, pick up the ball, with pad in opposite hand, and place ball in case. As I do this, the pad goes out of view for a sec behind the case, allowing me to switch for the cardio pad that has "BALL" and "BOWLING" written on it. It appears to be the same pad, all looks legit. I then place the pad on an easel until the time in which I go into Cardio. I tear off the first sheet, which takes the place of turning the first piece of paper, and I am off. It is a very practical solution if using both in the same show.
I am whatever I am to you.

Clever idea!!!

It's great to combine effects (ambitious card-card to impossible location).

Great thinking!!! Smile
