I have a friends production that can be preset before I even arrive at the show. I don't use a backdrop for kid's parties because it is excessive.

That is what I day dreamed about for years. I be thinking about getting duplicates of each of my tricks. I'll hire a crew to set up my props before I get there. When I'm done the same crew will take down my props while my second crew will be setting up for my next party before I arrive.

That certainly would be nice. Can you imagine how great that would be to just show up at the house and not have to set up or load or lug in anything? Just walk in and start performing. When your done, just meet and greet the people and be on your way. awwwww nice thoughts. Not realistic, but nice. hehe =)

HI,
Personaly I would not like it!
often when I work a theatre as a part of a show, The stage hands set my stuff on stage (performers have to stay in thier dressing rooms until called) I know my act so well that I am always worried that something will not be in the correct position when I go for it.
I like the peace of mind of setting myself

Well, you always have to check your set up and equipment even if someone else sets it up for you. That would be a given.

I'm still reeling from the idea of 7 to 10 trips to the car and moving furniture around. Is this a magic show or a moving company?

Someone (Bill Larsen Sr?) said the perfect 30 minute kid show was to produce a dove and let the kids pet it for 15 minutes, then produce a rabbit and let the kids pet it for 15 minutes!

And don't forget Docc Hilford's "20 minutes with a ballon" video. I think he uses a balloon, a mouthcoil, and two sponge balls. It isn't "No Props", but it's close.

Hi,
But you cannot if you are a part of a stage show. the DSM wont let you back stage until just before you go on
You can set your props on the tables ect, but the stage hands put them on stage not you

Both. That way I'll get repeated shows for doing two for one. Smile

The problem with a typical kid's show is that it's held in a house. You have 10-35 kids running around screaming while you are trying to lug in all your 'junk' and then sitting, watching, waiting for a secret while you try to set up.
"Please go away little boy... I need to do the dirty work on my tricks." He goes away only to come back 5 seconds later with fifteen of his closest friends to also watch you set up.

If you need to set up things in the house without the attention of any onlookers then you are not very well prepared for the birthday market. You should be prepared to entertain the children from the moment you enter the house until the moment you leave. Children don't understand setup time.

I would get there before the party started and do whatever setup I needed in the bathroom. Smile

All this set up seems to be a waste of valuable party time and valuable weeked time.

E.g. if the spend 20 minutes setting up then that's an extra show a DAY I couldn't do.

Exactly Nicholas!
Getting there before they party starts is not practical for a professional birthday entertainer. I often do 4-5 parties on a Saturday. What if someone wants to book you for 2:30pm & you can only make it after 4:00pm because the rest of your day is booked up? What do you tell the client? You tell them it is a good idea to have afternoon tea before the magic show. I think it is most unprofessional to request use of the bathroom upon arriving. I remember doing it once and the children almost knocked the door down with their enthusiasm to see. I have relieved myself on the side of the road in preference to using the bathroom at a client’s house.

I bet we all have stories like that. Stories of things we actually went through in order to provide the best show possible. Infact that might make for a very intereting thread. =)

I recently am using more equipment in my shows these days. I have hired two teenagers before to help me with set up and re-packing. I guess it is time for me to do it again.

I really don't mind the children peeking while I'm setting up.
To them, it's just stuff. They will always refer to your props as stuff.
They have no idea what they are used for.
I never let them see me load the bunny. That is the only thing I hide from them.

Way to bring back an OLD thread Dynamike!
I don't use a roll-on table, it hurts my armpits.
Children always want to see what I'm doing, and I've learned to deal with it..and what to hide and not to hide.
I wish it were kids that paid the checks, I'd be a billionaire! My clients are generally great, but occasionally I get that "special" one....

So your shows have got BIGGER, Dynamike? Obviously your clients now have bigger rooms for your gear! I thought my Birthday Shows were big until I read your list of props, way to go! It would be difficult, though not impossible, to find enough clients with such large sitting rooms in the UK. I don't even take in a backdrop, which I'd love to do, but in many folks' front rooms, there's simply not enough space.
One thing I dislike about this business is when I'm really exhausted and I still have a heap of shows with no respite. That all comes down to careful planning ahead, and not being too greedy, and taking too many shows on. When I read of you guys doing 3,4 or even 5 shows a day, it astonishes me. I take two shows every Saturday and Sunday, and rarely more than one on weekdays, that's it.
The other boring element of any business is the paperwork.......
