I absolutely agree with my friend Ken, when I am able to go into childrens hospital to make terminally ill children, and their parents laugh it is a special feeling. The other side of the coin is having my name on a charity hit list just makes me feel used.

To be clear, I'm not talking about donating your show. I do very little of that. I'm mainly speaking of donating your time and money in causes you truly believe in outside of your profession. I believe that’s what the opening post was referring to also.

That maybe true but charity is charity be it giving ones time to help in some project or helping a friend etc.. So posts about providing performances for charity events and the likes, does fit properly in this thread.
I think Jeff's o.p. was meaning more of in a monetary way but again there isn't a post that is off topic here. |

Yes, I give monthly to many charitable organizations and some that are not 501(c)3 certified (ie. not tax deductible). I think it is very normal. And I agree as others have asserted that giving needs to be voluntary and heartfelt or it is worthless.
abc, I would challenge your statement that "the Bible says 10%." The Old Testament commands the Hebrews to give 10% to the temple as a "tax," since the Levites did not receive land originally (out of the 12 tribes, they were the only ones who did not). So the 10% was given to support them as a temple tax. There is no such command in the New Testament, so no need to feel "guilty" that you cannot give 10% to your church. Any preacher/pastor who claims that the Bible says you must give 10% is either ignorant about it or is just looking to get rich off of you. Sorry, off my soapbox now. |

And when it does it is only to make the point that tithing is not nearly as important as mercy and faith and other ‘weightier’ matters. In other words giving just to say you’re following the law and to make yourself look good is worthless. However, I can find no place in the Bible that negates the very specific command to tithe found in the book of Malichi. This is universally accepted in most churches. Your statement that any preacher/pastor that teaches this is either ignorant or wants to get rich is a little over the top. (IMHO) Quote:

My apologies for stepping on toes. You're right, maybe a bit over the top, but in some cases true!

No sweat! I agree, there are some who exploit this for their own personal gain. Too bad.
