Hey everyone. I did a search looking for this but couldn't seem to find anything relevant, and I'm positive this has been discussed before, but I must ask again.
What ideas have people come up with as an alternative to using a coin purse frame? I LOVE the routines out there, like Curtis Kam's Coercive Purse or Shoot Ogawa's Neo Purse Frame, but personally just don't like using a purse frame. I've thought about a steel harness ring, like Scott Guinn uses in his Worm Hole trick, but what else might be good? |

Who are you (your character)?
What is "it"? to you or (supposedly) to the audience? What would you like to find there? What else might you have put in there? What else might you find in there? What else might be in there for other reasons? From your own answers to those questions you can find what works for you. By way of example, remember those cartoons where people go running this way and that between the doors in a hallway with lots of doors. Okay - how about a mini version using one or more cardboard doors and frames (recall the prop from the "mystery date" game from the TV commercials) ? Well what if you had one and set it on the table? I've been toying with that "open the door" cutout idea w/wo blackart (matches tablecloth) for a bit and it looks fun. So, when you imagine a magical place to find a thing - what pops into your mind? A disembodied pocket? A piggy bank that jingles when you shake it when something appears inside? Maybe just "what's under the glass" - your lucky glass from that night you tended bar?

There are MANY coin productions on the New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD series. Just to name a few...Roth produces 4 coins from a hankerchief on volume 15 and a different method on vol. 1. I produce coins from a wishing well in vol 11, and two nice ones on vol. 5. Bertini produces them from the table corners on vol. 7, and has another on vol. 6. Gallo has a nice one on vol 5. So many more in the series - Gallo with a credit card, from Okito boxes, and on and on....
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Thanks Mr. Townsend for your reply. As always, you never simply answer the question, but provide great theory and points to ponder.

Curtis produces one coin from a goblet ON the COINvention DVD sets. He also vanishes and reproduces coin in the light of a flashlight. Chad Long, Eric Jones, and Doug Brewer (and prob others) have produced coins with fire.John Carney produces coins from a bill. There's also coin cups. And as Mike pointed out, Okito boxes and a ton of great ideas on the NYCS dvds. I'm not sure any of these fit as a replacement for the purse frame though.

For the adventurous, there's a Fred Lowe item in The Art of Close-up Magic Volume One by Ganson (page 216) using a small piece of paper which has a slit - coins go in, change... been sitting there in print since 1972 along with lots of other goodies. I'd put that book right next to "The Stars of Magic" as a resource.

End of necktie. shake 'em out of your sleeve. Jerry Andrus had some great ideas, I think called "Miser's Miracle" with coins and cards. Youa could just hold a short stub of a pencil between thumb and index finger tips.

What is it you don't like about using a purse frame if I may ask?

The 'Swadling Swindle'. Mark Mason and Bob Swadling's recent 'Triception' coin set has a production of four coins from between two cards shown both sides.

I like the purse frame, "AND"(not shouting) other opportunities.
With the tie you can also do the pull thread gag....giving you more "bits"....and if you have that certain something(s) built into the tie....hmmmm Thanks for jogging my memory....(another benefit of this great Café) Harris aka dr. laff

The responses above suggest that there are quite a few alternatives. From the flame of a candle is one of the earliest, and from an iPhone is probably the most recent. Here are a few that are off the beaten track:
-David Acer starts by "milking" the coins from a short piece of magician's rope. (Natural Selections) I must confess I don't really understand this, but it looks neat. -Bill Duncan shows the audience a $20 bill and produces a coin from it. Unlike most magicians, he doesn't fold the bill. He holds the bill flat, and pulls the coin out of the image of the treasury building. ("Coin, from Bill") -I once saw a Japanese magician, Tomo Maeda, I think, search his pockets, and find only a piece of cotton. He set it on the table, and touched it with his cigarette. The cotton flashed into a burst of flame, and coins appeared in its place. -Long, long ago, Patrick Martin appeared on a televised standup comedy show. He had a Kikuchi fire coin purse. As usual, he opened the purse and flames came out. Not at all as usual, he then held his other hand over the flames, the fire leapt up to his fingers, and three coins appeared at his fingertips. This looked great, and in spite of the popularity of fire magic, I've never seen anyone else do this. -I've used a small slip of flash paper and called it the "fortune from a fortune cookie" lighting it, I promise to change "a small fortune into a small fortune". (i.e. three silver dollars) -Using a magic wand as a "metal detector" David Williamson produces coins from his, and the spectators' clothes ("Money Talks" from Williamson's Wonders) -On the previous set of NYCS discs, Giacomo Bertini uses an odd-looking disk to "mint" his own coins for the audience. -Speaking of minting, don't forget Alan Wakeling's "The Mint". Still sold by Johnson products, I hope. You start with a silver cube, which you make into a sphere, then squash flat into a disc, and then change into a coin. -Jay Sankey started by showing the audience a silver pocketwatch attached by a chain to his pocket. He pulled the watch off the chain, and it became four coins. (Richard's Almanac) -Or do you have a can of compessed air for cleaning the keyboard of your computer? Relabel it as "Coins in a can" and use that to produce your coins. As a gag, hand the can to a spectator for him to try, but he gets spray cheeze! HAHA, hilarity ensues. Or somebody sues. (Probably best to ignore that last one.)

I have a very modest little round 5" freestanding silver metal framed mirror I swi....borrowed from my wife years ago that I enjoy very much for coin work. The metal frame and thin, almost wirelike tripod stand are the color of my silver morgans. The mirror pivots 360 degrees, so one can use it table like, or vertically. I like how it's roundness reflects the roundness of my Morgans. It all seems....right.
It's nice to pull coins out of, or, shove them back into looking-glass land. Sometimes they get shoved right through, and fall out the other side. It's nice to set a round, velvety cloth the same size on the mirror, and try to shove the coin through both to have it go missing, and turn up under the cloth. You can use the reflections prettily in your act, and it's all just simple and examinable, since it's hand magic.

Also per Roth, the disembodied sleeve of a jacket.
I may have missed its mention earlier - there's a Have Bennet routine where you squeeze coins and then a spoon out of kitchen or small handwashing sponge. I liked the idea enough to use a much smaller sponge and have that "wipe up" some coins using Roth type EG handing for the vanishes and patter that's pretty much a "bounty" commercial. Curtis got that by way of a letter and suggested the striking ending of squeezing the small sponge (quarter sized or so) and having the coins fall out in a visual display. So let's add "sponge" to the list of candidates.

Dude, you know it's "Doug" Bennett. Victimized by autocorrect?
Yes, me likee the sponge, too. And as long as we're listing David Roth ideas, don't forget the rubber-stamped ink impressions that become real. And also Dingle's lit matches to coins, which begat Ammar's lighter flame to coins. And of course, my fave, coin out of dinner roll.

Joe Rindfleish published a routine in The Trap Door "Liquid Silver" where you extract four silver coins from a silver bottle with a straw. At one point you actually see the straw fill up with silver.

I love John Carney's "Logical Bill Trick" which after milking three coins, one by one, from a borrowed bill shown to be normal between each production, supplies a climax with the production of a higher denomination bill (I'm using a 1 billion $ Kennedy bill).
Jerry Andrus "Miser's Miracle" reminded by Pete Biro can be made absolutely crazy by using Gaetan Bloom's balancing of a card -and then of its pieces- as misdirection. A phenomenal combination. Now when mentioning the purse frame with coins, one should not forget to also put under the spotlights the great moves created by Mike Gallo and the ones of Tim Feher.
