That sponge idea is absolutely brilliant. Wow!
This was a good question, too. I love the startling visual weirdness of good purse frame magic, but a purse frame isn't something I'm excited about using myself. It's a few years past the peak of popularity for the computer game "Portal", but its iconic orange and blue fiery rings - anything put into one comes out the other - are probably still worth considering as a concept for a purse-frame type routine. You could make them out of...um...harness rings and glitter, maybe? (Surely someone has tried this by now?) Unlike some of the ideas mentioned so far, this could use mostly purse-frame *techniques*. (If you don't care about that, there must be a thousand possibilities.) Allow me to brainstorm for a moment...I'm sure these won't all be *original* ideas, but.... Somehow the "milking" and "sponge" and "rubber stamp" ideas combined in my mind to produce "eye dropper". And if a rubber stamp works, how about a crude sketch? Mirrors seem very right to me....something else like that? Magnifying glass? Jeweler's loupe? (I think I've seen those written up someplace?) Telescope to find far-off coins? Lid of your lost coin jar? (Those mason jar lids where the threaded part and the flat part are separate.) Purse frame moves ought to work for this one too. Haunted bracelet? (Your grandma's? King Tut's?) Look around for things of the right size and shape, then ask yourself if they make any sense at all. ...but as usual, Jonathan Townsend goes right to the heart of the matter: Who are you, and what is this thing to you? That's truly the key. For example, right now I'm messing with an "Inexhaustible Purse" routine (mostly based on Gary Kurtz's, but I plan to personalize it a lot). I'm in love with the internal logic of that premise: it's a "magic item" like you'd find in a fantasy adventure game, or a fairy tale, brought into the real world. From its name, everyone can imagine its powers, and the whole routine flows from there. I can imagine a whole act based on such "magic items": like the classic Bag of Holding (from Dungeons & Dragons): it's the size of a grocery bag on the outside, but can hold as much stuff inside as a small truck - if you can fit it through the opening. The "magic items" premise even explains why you'd have a magic wand! (...that shoots fireballs!) And gold coins! Now, that concept might work great for *me*, and it was easy for *me* to think of, because the premise resonates with how I see my character as a magician. (Well...more or less!) It might be completely wrong for someone else. Put yourself into your presentations. You'll sound more sincere and have more fun. |

Guys, I'm sorry to resurrect this years old thread, but I realized I never read the later responses nor followed up on my original posts. Guys, THANK YOU for all the replies. This place is truly a treasure trove of information!
If I may clarify, I originally posed my question because I wanted to use EXISTING purse frame moves and was looking for an alternative to an actual purse frame. I love some of the moves in "Neo Purse Frame," and want to combine them with "Coercive Purse" using a purse frame type prop. So, my requirement is that the prop should be around the same size as an open purse frame so I can do the existing moves. I would also like to pull out a 3 inch jumbo from it. I know that the purse frame is already the ideal prop, as that is how a lot of these routines were constructed. I simply want to explore what other "modern" frame like props could be used today. In showing the purse frame to my kids, they didn't really know what it was, because, IMO, coin purses are not very common nowadays. Again, thanks for all the suggestions. Aside from this purse frame routine, I am certainly going to look up all the other cool stuff mentioned. I'm blown away by you guys! |

Here is a silly thought, what if you were to fold a card in half, tear a hole in the card and use the card as a purse frame?
Perhaps a tie in with Immaculate Connection by Paul Harris; maybe some sort of lead into a matrix... |

Get a set of those windup talking teeth. Pull silver coins out of its mouth saying you are removing the silver filings.

Taking the idea of "frame" or :portal" a bit larger, set up a large frame on the table - 2'X3' or so.
Stand behind it and perform as if you are on TV. You can do amazing things not possible without the frame since today's audience will not see anything not on the screen. Silly? Try it and you will be amazed at the differences to audience response to your favorite magic effects. Remember, the eyes do not see, the mind does. Since the audience is conditioned to see things on a limiting screen - go with it. On the limited scale - be sure to allow each spectator to see into the purse frame or other portal. It will focus their attention.

Have you thought of using just the top band of a “squeeze” coin pouch? (like the Quiver type wallet with spring steel bands that you squeeze to open)
You could say my coin pouch got so worn that it fell apart, however...*Magic* Blessings Steph

Good string of ideas here. 😊👍🏽
Surprisingly, I don’t think I saw it mentioned here, but a very simple thing to do is to produce one or multiple coins from a pen cap. 😁 I have done it that way quite convincingly for a long time now since first seeing it from a teenager. A pen is small and easy to carry, a quite ordinary little thing to have on you that can amazingly produce extraordinary things from an impossible place. 😉 I’ve even been able to make it all even more deceptive by using my “Quick Pitch” at times. And I’m sure some of you out there know what I’m sayin.😉 I just look for a coin, remember my pen, pop off the cap showing it cleanly, even blowing in it a bit, then give it a shake down into my hand and a coin(s) come out. 😁 I’ve even reversed it at times and put the coin back in at the end of a set. 😁 People’s eyes still POP in wonderment when they see that coin come out of that little pen cap. It’s a great way to start things off, and the pen can be used as a wand or in other magical ways, where perhaps other things like a purse frame cannot be used as practically or convincingly. 😊 It’s just a simple little thing but it works quite well, especially as to “Less is More.” 😉

Pen cap got me thinking 🤔 ...Say you show a nice Cross Style classy pen.
Talk about “Presidential Pens” like those used for signing important bills etc... “Mine is from Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower (let them look and handle pen) Do you know HOW I can tell it’s IKE’s? It’s in the cap, there’s always a commemorative coin inside each! *Plunk*... (Also, has anyone used a PEZ with Kennedy or Ike head to shoot coins out magically?) Too much coffee this morning! ☕️ LOL Steph

I have made a ziplock bag gimmick for just this purpose. Step one is getting a ziplock bag the size you want, something you can hold in that "purse frame grip" between the crotch of your thumb and your index finger. You can always make your own that size by cutting it down and melting the edges. Then you just make a slit under the ziplock closure on one side. Now you can show the empty bag, and retrieve anything you have palmed through the slit, and show it coming out the mouth of the bag.

Anything that allows you to perform the same moves as purse frame can be used.
Start by going to your favorite crafts store to what items be it harness rings (macrame); small picture frames and objects of similar dimensions. Of course you can invent new moves to compensate for any slight deference's in the shape. |
