The last WW1 vet in the US has died at 110 years of age. His name was Frank Buckles. That leaves two known WW1 vets in the world, one a woman in Britain who is 110 years old and a British gent now living in Australia, also 110. I remember seeing these vets walking in parades when I was a kid in large numbers. For those of you who had family that served in the first world war you should be proud (I didn't have any relatives serve then, they were either too young or too old at that time) of your and their history.

Frank was a prisoner in WW2 for 38 months too. He joined up at 16, lied to get in. Suprised I remember what I heard at 5am I am.

Wow...didn't know that. Being a POW was no picnic for anyone.

Make America Great Again! - Trump in 2020 ... "We're a capitalistic society. I go into business, I don't make it, I go bankrupt. They're not going to bail me out. I've been on welfare and food stamps. Did anyone help me? No." - Craig T. Nelson, actor.

I would have thought his last name would have been "Pillsbury".
OK, sorry. Wow. Lots of respect for a veteran of 2 WW's and a POW to boot! Speaking of POW's I was looking once again the story of the USS Pueblo (caught by N. Korea, its crew held/tortured). I remember the documdrama about it that was telecast in the 70's (I think) about it. Powerful, tough stuff. "Hawaiian good luck!"
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

The last verse refers to what has come to pass today, or at least what will when the remaining two veterans pass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lE-YjjZhwc&feature=related

World War I was certainly futile. As Oswald Spengler (and others!) sensed even before the outbreak of hostilities, WWI was the graveyard of Europe, and perhaps of Western civilization. It is taking time to play out, but I think the despair and disgust with their own world that dominates our intellectual and cultural elites began on the killing fields of Flanders.

Who cares about our cultural and intellectual elites? Let em choke to death on their brie.
Canada's last WW1 vet died last year and we are seeing the WW2 generation starting to go in huge numbers. My grandfather served in the Great war, like a lot of Canadians who recently immigrated, they signed up for the old country and wound up returning as Canadians. With Vimy ridge, Canada began its emergence from British colony to a nation in its own right. The perfect country to protect and preserve Western civilization. |

Well, thorndyke, it may yet turn out that way. More power to you, and thanks, Canada!
