I'm looking to round up some Magical ideas on littering for a project I'm working on at the moment, has anyone had any experience in this area? Specifically littering, not eco friendly or recycling stuff. I've had a search around but not come up with much. Any ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks

Brainstorming off the top of my head -
What about a Chinese Laundry Ticket effect - tearing a strip of paper with the word LITTER printed boldly - restore it and unfold to show a drawing of a full litter trash basket. A multiplying sponge ball effect with white balls could demonstrate the way that one piece of litter propagates into an unsightly pile. Combine the old Dirty Hand Towel gag with a devil's hank. The flap is on the "audience side" surface of the hank. With the flap up, we see a drawn image of a litterbug standing next to an empty litter can. With the flap down, we see a drawn image of a hogtied litterbug standing next to a full litter can. Glue little magnets colored the same as the cloth around the litterbug in the flap-up image. Fold the hank with litter and debris (not using the pocket) each bit of trash has a magnet concealed in it so that each piece collects around the litterbug. When you open the hank (flap up) we see the smiling litterbug surrounded by trash and an empty can. Remove the trash, refold the hank, stuff the trash into the pocket. Let the hank drop open holding the flap by the top corners to show a litterbug surrounded by trash. The trash and debris drop open (flap down) and we see the frowning hogtied litterbug next to a full litter can. A reel can be used to toss several balls of paper onto the ground then have them fly back into your hand or into a litter can. Maybe these wild suggestions will get the ideas flowing. Good luck! Skip

Look at Barry Mitchell's green show from the late 1990's. It was available three years ago as a dvd and set of instructions and included lots of details about the garbish American families throw away every year. http://www.barrymitchellproducts.com/sto......Show_DVD
It included water waste; a rabbit wringer changed into a garbage compactor that showed the different kinds of waste; batteries etc. I've used ideas from it in several presentations. Here's the blurb Going_Green Garbage Busters Recycling Show DVD In 1998 I did a school recycling show. It seems the topic is still "topical" today. I recently decided to pull out the last remaining video of the show and offer it to school entertainers for ideas. Truthfully, it was because of the requests of magicians that had heard about the show. The purchase of this DVD gives you the right to use my script and ideas for the tricks. Most of the effects are available or you can make with a little effort. Tricks used are Anderson Newspaper Tear, Flash Paper and Finger Flasher Gimmick, Rabbit Wringer, (a rabbit is NOT used in the show) 2 Nielsen Vanishing Coke Bottles, Appearing Pole, Jumbo Deck, and Magic Mirror. A flashlight trick is also used but you'll be able to make it yourself. All other props used in the show are easily available. It's been 10 years since I've done this show and when I watched the video I was very impressed. Not because of my talent level, good or bad, but because of the educational content of the show. If you're planning a recycling, earth day, or green show I'm confident you'll find ideas and inspiration on this DVD. Comes with DVD, not the world's greatest quality but certainly good enough for educational purposes, and a few notes I've made about the show, plus instructions for 4 of the effects printed from my "Wee Wand Routines" book. Price: $30.00

He did say not recycling but I don't see any harm in including it.

It's full of facts about how much litter is thrown out

Spelling Bee – You could have the individual letters all jumbled around and as you take them out, you can talk about how people (like the letters) just toss things all over the place. Like this jumbled up word, littering doesn’t make any sense.
We need to learn to place things back where they should go. (have a child pick a number and place back one of the letters). We need to learn to toss away trash in a proper place like a trash can (have child pick another number and place that letter in that spot). If we learn to put things back where they should go and learn to throw things away as we should, we can learn to “RESPECT” the environment in which we live in. You then turn it around to show that the letters, placed back in the order the kids tell you to, end up spelling “respect”. Mouthcoils – Bring a child up and have them select a piece of paper. The paper you tell them is useful for writing and for making things. But it can also be litter if we should tear it like so (have kid tear their paper). If we keep tearing it and tossing trash on the ground, we are littering. Like all of our pieces of paper, it doesn’t look so good does it? It simply makes a mess for everyone. But if we remember to take care of trash the right way then the world is seen differently (start to restore papers and show the coil changing colors). That trash that was once litter can become beautiful again through recycling (if you want to add that message in). Less littering makes the world look better (pull out more colored paper from the coil). If we each learn to throw away our trash and not litter, the world can be a colorful place to live in. (show full coil). I hope these ideas might be of use to you or at least get you thinking in different ways. It is about taking common props and utilizing them in creative ways to express a point. But as you are teaching them, you are doing so in a fun manner. Kyle

Great stuff guys that's given me some idea's to work with. Thank you all
One effect I'm going to do is pull a 8ft straw out of a brown paper bag, I'm also in the process of converting some spring money into spring napkins and spring candy wrappers/ chip/crisp bags these will also come out of the paper bag as if someone had eaten their lunch and left the litter behind-- any other ideas?-- I want it to seem ridiculous how much stuff comes out of one small paper bag I'e also developed a skit for a spring fox with a styrofoam cup stuck to his face, which will be about the dangers of litter to wildlife. I also intend on using healed and sealed and gum coils This is where I'm at so far. Thanks again all

I'm fairly certain there is an 8ft broom that comes out of a paper bag. You could use this to sweep up the mess.

Yup, Wayne Rogers. Same guy who makes the spade from paper bag I belatedly suggested for your show. Except it's less 8 foot and more broom sized.

How about paper balls over the head? Talk about how sometimes one or two or three pieces of litter are not even noticed when they are right in front of you. They just seem to disappear. Of course, everyone else sees them and that's a problem. The whole trick is nothing but littering all over the stage, after all.
Any multiplying trick can talk about the way that litter just seems to get bigger and bigger. Multiplying bottles, for instance. Those Nielson soda bottles would work for your production bit. They look like litter. -Patrick |

Ah yes, it is Wayne Rogers who makes the less than 8 ft broom. I have his appearing straw. Very well made and Wayne is super friendly.

My company, Wack-o-Magic, has a mirror bucket coming out that looks like a garbage can...
It would be PERFECT for your show.. put all the garbage you want into the garbage can.. and have it vanish... or show the can empty and produce all the stuff that ShOULD have gone into the trash... it comes witha recycling themed routine.. and a magic routine wiht a teddy bear.. but really, as a utility prop... it can't be beat for what you want to do... http://www.wackomagic.com/wackomagic/Whats_in_the_trash.html price subject to change.. as they are not done yet... two more weeks or so |

Whenever Wayne knows you're calling round he rolls himself up and hides in a paper bag.
