Yesterday I unwrapped my set of Topsy-Turvey Soda Bottles, from Michael Mosher’s new Wack-O-Magic company. They are just wonderful to work with. (For full disclosure, the amusing routine was submitted to Michael by yours truly, but I had nothing to do with the manufacturing end.)
There are a ton of plus things about the trick: --You use, and can hand out to your spectators REAL full Cola Bottles. --You can replace the standard bottles with any six-pack of Coke. --Being plastic bottles with heavy duty tubes, there is nothing to drop and break. --There’s a kicker ending, so you won’t have that “unfinished” feeling. --The set is self-contained, no gimmicks to add or take away. --The tubes have two-way arrows that add to the premise. --The spectator is respected, the magician is the one who’s confused. This is well made, topical (using one of the top-two soda brands) you’ll get the handling in just a few hours, you’ll have the presentation down in only a day or two. No more fake looking cherry-soda bottles, and meaningless tin tubes that can dent. Some smart guys are all ready coming up with variations, like multiple productions of more bottles using easy cup/ball moves, like other options for the kicker end, like a clean way to display both tubes to be totally innocent. This is the Topsy-Turvey I know I’ve been waiting for and wanted all my magical life, and thanks Michael for getting it on the market. They’re also a good price, and each set is lovingly hand made here in the U.S. you can find out more at their site: http://www.wack-o-magic.com AND a full demo video will be up in the next few weeks, so you can see the set in action! This really brings this effect into the 21st century! And at this price it's a steal! Good job Michael & Walt.

I only got the Confusin' Crayons last week (cheaply) so that will be in my act for the fore-seeable future.
Also what about schools / daycare centres who don't allow fizzy drinks to be bought in or sold?

Yah I use crayons too and am a bit hesitant to use a soda themed trick for kids

Also, using cola and turning it upside down means its getting 'Fizzed Up'. You cant open the bottle afterwards without problems...

The "fizz up" in a soda bottle only lasts about 40 seconds... otherwise you'd NEVER be able to open a soda bottle.
I thought about putting out a "diet" version... but thought the better of it.. You don't HAVE to give away the soda... and as far as schools that don't allow it.. it's not like they don't allow kids to LOOK at it.. you can alway theme the routine about how soda is an "upside down" choice for a snack.. and that every time the kid tries to drink it.. the opening is AWAY from their mouths.. so even the BOTTLE OF SODA knows it's not supposed to be a snack. A video is coming very soon and also one for my Mis-Made Monster as well. |

Guys are out there doing hand/head choppers for children,
and using fire in their acts, and even guns (like bang ones) producing birthday cakes. Hmmmm... guillotines playing with fire firearms refined and gluten snacks Soda pop… Let's see what one is less of a problem? Soda! Don’t think there’s too much work to be lost, as long as you talk to the parents/teachers about their preferences. And it can be "turned" into a cautionary message. Or do Mormon shows, they own lots of stock in Coke. My two-cents, Walt |

I have been around magic for many many years, and for some reason, I've never seen any bottles routines in person, or on video. I've read about them, seen them in catalogs, and read the reviews on these postings in the Café'. I bought the Topsy Turvy set from Michael a few weeks ago, and to be honest, after receiving it, was a bit confused on the handling and routining.
He has been extremely kind, and very patient with what I'm guessing are very basic handling moves to those familiar with the trick. I felt like I was bombarding him with dumb questions, but again, he replied to every one of my e-mails with grace, courtesy, and thoroughness in his explanations. He cleared up all of my questions, his customer service has been top notch. I am thrilled to read that a video demo will be coming out, simply for me to actually see the routine in action. I am a much more visual learner, than I am from reading written out instructions. I feel that the demo will simply enhance doing this routine as it should be done. And this will be a starting point to then evolve it to my own personality and style. Oh, and I think I read it in another thread, I agree that his shipping is one of the fastest I've ever encountered. I believe I ordered it on a Monday, and had it in Indianapolis by Wednesday. Doug |

This is a PAIN for me to accept...( Being a fan of books and reading ) BUT we are now in a 100% Visual Learning culture of magicians! So a video would be helpful!

This is rather unrelated to the topsy turvey bottles.. and should sort of be under RANTS.. but.. it's very hard for me to separate my personal opinions from my professional storefront... the following is my personal opinion.
I don't want to EVER come of as snarky, as I pride myself on my customer service.. but what video demonstrations are doing to magic now days are not something that I think is good for magic. If you've ever seen video demos from other magic companies .. you'd see that they are not a magician's friend. Sometimes they don't even show the effect.. let alone enough information to buy it or not! I'm getting video out there as fast as I can... but honestly.. do you think that video demos, in their current incarnation, are good for magic or a magicians informed opinion? |

I still have old (and I mean old) Abbott’s, Owen, Kanter, Ireland, and Adams Magic Catalogues.
Back then you looked at a line drawing/sketch, read a paragraph, and ordered or did not order. If you called the shop they’d say the same thing as their catalogue, if you went to the shop in person they would point the prop out on the shelf, and if they had time a demo guy would quickly run through the basics without any routine or presentation. Then you plunked down your money or not. For the hundred plus years we bought that way, sure we got burned, but I doubt the “burn factor’ is any higher or lower today. You get a great effect or you get a poor one, video or not, slick tech filming or at a kitchen table. We magicians tend to by on impulse and curiosity, and that means we both win and lose. It’s great to have the luxury and privilege to today see a video on a shop site or YouTube, but it is not an entitlement, it is a perk done by a dealer who has time, energy, and money to give you an e-demo. As mentioned I’ve often found that the video demo is as, or even more, deceptive than those drawings and paragraphs in the old catalogues. Other times I’ve seen magician uncreatively copy the video move for move, word for word, in their “unique original shows” what a shame! Yes, I like a quick bare bones demo, in person or online, but I’m not going to make that a deal breaker. I DO make Customer Service a deal breaker, today any reputable dealer will answer questions and lead you to what may work for you, and be honest short of giving you the secrets. I recall that not all that long ago, the world got along just fine, really well actually, without ATM Cards, PayPal, Videos, DVD, the Internet, cell phones, IPhones, IPads, ear buds, or even email (remember stamps?) How did we survive? The same way we did before electricity, the auto, the phone, or the wheel. The world has changed and will change again, but technology can also make us spoiled brats, as I said above, a video or any other type of “preview” is a perk, a gift, not something to demand or feel entitled to. This particular company is working on a good live demo, it will be out when time and funds allow. However, there’ve been a lot of brave magicians and magic shops who’ve bought and loved these products, and some guys are just missing out. My older-guy rant, Walt |

I think it's a great idea! If you like the effect enough to possibly use it, buy it and make a demo. Worst case - you're disappointed with the prop or routine, so you sell it. Most new props here sell for about the same as new anyway. Or hang on to it for 10 years, and sell it as a collectors item for more than you paid for it.

Honestly in today's youtube world it does not take long at all to make and post a video. Does the creator of a magic trick have to make one in order to sell a trick? No!
Does a video help sell a trick? Not necessarily! It might hurt! |

You're not going to make everyone happy. I think video is great but word of mouth is better. When I find a prop, effect, trick that I think I might like to purchase I come to the Café to see what others think. My fellow Magicians have never let me down. I will always trust them to lead me in the right direction.
