Hello everyone,
I have seen this forum pop up quite a bit whenever I search random tidbits on magic performances. I am greatly inspired by the works of Pilou, Topas, Jerome Murrat & Soma as well as the technique of An Ha Lim(usually the performances with a theme which has been performed top notch). I noticed that many of them are very good card manipulators and can back palm multiple cards at the same time which is something I can not wrap my head around. I can easily work with one card, but do not have enough grip to get my hands around the group of them. My hands are not small, nor are they large but moreso average. My question is: Is there a certain brand, or type of card that these magicians are using to manipulate in their acts that would make it more simple than just purchasing a deck of Bicycle cards from the store? Do any of them purchase slightly smaller cards than normal? I am truely awed at magic and have been to many of the big conventions in Miami before they stopped running them. This is something I would like to pursue and put much time and effort into to produce a professional and inspiring act. The goal would be to get to FISM (which may sound laughable to many of you, but I believe with the time, effort, study, practice can always be possible with a creative mind). Can you help me in the right direction? You all seem like a very helpful, nice, informative group of people willing to share and I appreciate everything I have browsed already. I'm glad this forum is here on the internet for everyone to get together. Thank you for any help you are able to give! Best, Nicholas |

Hi,
I'm not sure if they are easier to back palm, but I prefer to use Bee playing cards. Another idea is to use Norm Nielsen Ultra Thin Manipulation Cards. You can get them here http://www.nnmagic.com/magicitems/manipulationpage.htm Hope this help, Tommy |

Well, Bridge cards are narrower then Poker cards, but most serious manipulators use Poker.
Cardshark sells his half-thickness "double decker" Phoenix cards if that's what you are looking for. Honestly though, I think most of it is just good old practice. The greats have spent enormous time building those skills.

Like Tommy pointed out, there are varoius brands of manipulation cards that you can purchased from Magic store and they are available in poker and bridge sizes.
If you prefer to stick with Rider Back, you can "condition" the cards to make it easiler to back plam a stack. You need to build up your hand muscles via parctice, practice and practice. There are many sources of material out in the market to teach card manipulations. If you are interested in this art form, it is a good investment if you haven't done so. |

Thank you all for the replies. I suppose using the bridge cards would be easier, but I also suppose if I am to do it the right way I should probably just go ahead and practice with the normal cards. One last question I had was: what would the best instructional book / video be? I have seen around these forums the suggestion of Jeff McBrides (someone I met as a very young child as my dad drove the bus for magicians to and from the show as well as we watched it) and it seems like the way to go. Any other books are helpful as well.
Thank you all once again, you were very quick and very helpful and I do appreciate it greatly. Best, Nicholas |

There are a good number of manipulation decks out there, most will work about the same for you. Much thinner than standard playing cards, and as such much easier to manipulate. You can get good manipulation cards from almost any magic store, the main difference in most of them is what the back looks like. Some offer better camoflage for backpalming than others. Largely your preference.

I used to do card manipulation many years ago and after being dazzled by Neil Foster, I got to go back stage and meet him. I was about Tommy's age way back when, and he told me look for cards that are tans and browns, close to the color of a TT. Get the idea?

I made mine. I also used a set wich my magic teacher got me from Davenports, skin color.
Actually he could back palm a whole deck, his hands made two of mine. I rehearsed by wearing gloves.Loved Cardini. |
