John recently provided me with a complimentary copy of his effect titled "Evolutionary Color-Changing Deck". I thought I would provide my evaluation of his work.
Effect: "A spec FREELY names any card from a red deck, and is also given the opportunity to change their mind if they wish. The chosen card turns out to be the only blue card in the deck! Then in full view the entire deck changes color to blue and the chosen card is red! Finally, the spec's card changes back to blue to match the rest of the deck!" Formatting: Nicely formatted; excellent color photos accompany the text. (10/10) Instructions: Clear and grammatically correct; did not find any spelling errors. (10/10) Impact: IMO, the three color changes in rapid-fire succession are surprising and convincing. Nice pacing and a couple of nice subtleties help sell the color of the deck at the beginning of the effect. (9/10) Ease of Handling: Requires one very common, essential sleight that any magician (i.e. experienced beginner and above) should be able to perform. With a little practice this could be a very effective opener; remove the "joker" after the ribbon spread display and you are ready to move on to your next effect. (10/10) Overall: 9.5/10 I am a fan of good color-changing deck effects that hit quickly and do not require knuckle-busting sleights. I like and recommend this fun-to-do, straightforward effect. Hope folks find this review helpful. Regards, Angelo |

Thanks for the kind words Angelo.
I just wanted to point out that I gave this to Angelo as he inquired about purchasing this from me quite some time ago. I had no more physical copies of the book to sell, and do not have the original pdf it was printed from due to a mishap about 6 years ago. I recently discovered that someone has scanned this (rather well, too) and that over 800 people have downloaded it. Due to this series of events, I figured I might as well give it out for free to those who wanted to purchase it after I had run out of physical copies. Well, now I will send one to anyone who requests one. Simply PM me with your email address and I'll happily send you a copy - as long as you're willing to provide a post here with your thoughts etc; or to simply say "thanks". I think this is the best option given the circumstances, and maybe I can get my "name" out there this way so that it isn't a total loss. Cheers, J.Warrens |

Very nice. Clean and smooth. With just one basic sleight, it's a definite winner. PMing you an idea to add to it as well. Cheers Frank |

Thanks for sending this to me John.
I have just read through this and it looks pretty good. I already do a colour changing deck by Doc Eason. It always plays big as yours should. What I like about yours is the end, where all of the cards including the selection have the same coloured backs. No sign of a different coloured back card. Nice photos and clear explanation. John, thank you very much for your generosity. Piracy of others' work is theft of intellectual property and is to be unconditionally condemned. I know this will sound naive and obvious, but we Café members can do our part to discourage piracy. We should support the creators of effects by legitimately obtaining their effects and not illegitimately sharing with others. I am not trying to stir the bucket... just my two cents. . The emphasis of this thread is John's effect and his offer to share with others. Let's support John and others who advance our craft by making quality contributions to the magical arts. Thanks for the kind words and support everybody.
Just a quick update: my inbox is flooded and it takes a bit of time to get each one sent, so please have some patience if you have to wait a little while - I have a busy day today. I will send out more as soon as I get home, ok? On another note - I'm not surprised that it got pirated. It happens. Besides, I sold out the initial run a long while ago, so no profit is actually being lost. I have (in the past) downloaded the occasional file, particularly if I already owned a hard copy of whatever it was. I have since learned that this is not the right thing to do - so consider this penance. What comes around goes around, right? Also, when reading the manuscript - please keep in mind that I wanted to make this as easy as possible for even a beginner to do. Therefore, some small details (like shuffling at the beginning etc; but are not necessarily important to the successful conclusion of the effect) were left out so as not to confuse the reader. It is naturally assumed that those reading it who have experience would find those touches obvious. Glad everyone is enjoying it! J.Warrens |

John, Thank you very much for a copy of this trick.
I am a hobbyist and can easily do it, it has several color changes not only for the deck but also for the selected card. Very visual, I like it a lot. It uses a gimmick card very cleverly which allows for easy sleights. Again thank you very much for your offer and generosity Pablo |

I can be reached at my Café username at patriot.net Here's what I was going to PM: John, Thanks so much for your generous offer... You can E-mail me at: <my magic Café username>@patriot.net That said, and kind of moot since you've already let the Genie out of the bottle, but I think a better approach would have been to "recover" your lost file by selling prints off the pirated PDF copy. The band Aerosmith did this years ago with their "Live Bootleg" album. They bought up a bunch of bootleg recordings of their live shows and released the best of it as their own album. Nothing the bootleggers could do about it. The only "problem" I see in giving the effect away after seeing it pirated is that it may encourage some to pirate more... or even "justify" it to them. That, and it might bug the good folks who originally paid for the effect... though from your post I can infer that they've had a good few years of exclusive access. Anyway, it's clearly yours to do with as you wish, and I appreciate your generosity. Cheers... |

I never meant to publish it for the money when I first released it in 2005. I did it simply to protect it, because it was already getting "lifted" at that time.
Yes, the original purchasers got almost 6 years of exclusivity out of it, but it was also one of them who pirated it! Twas sold for $20.00 and also came with a deck ready -to-go as soon as you opened it. I'm pretty sure this isn't going to encourage piracy as my handling of the situation is somewhat unique. Anyways, we're getting off the thread's main topic here. @pabloinus: You're welcome buddy - glad you like it. It's been my opener for many years now. The title "Evolutionary" has to do with the progression of change in the effect as well as the patter theme. It's about how we are all unique, yet all the same. Cheers. |

The instruction are quite clear, but might have benefited from a description of some subtleties. I think Step 4 needs the right touch to really sell the effect. It needs show a lot of red but without coming off like you're over-proving something. Step 12 could benefit from some patter to go along with the counting off / reversing of the cards. Otherwise why don't you just break/cut the deck at the red card? Maybe something as simple as "they're all blue. Every... last... one..." as you count off the three blue cards? How do you handle that? Now to practice so I can try it out... |

As I stated above, I wanted to just provide the most basic mechanics so that even the most inexperienced could pick this up and do it.
In actuality, during step 12, I personally just spread and then break and continue thumbing the cards into the other hand. During this, the odd-colored card appears. So there is a "surprise!" moment when it arrives. I don't actually spread and then break at exactly 3 cards above as in the instructions. It is only explained this way so that there is no confusion for the reader. No patter is given, because if I had given my patter - it would have been sold for at least $100.00 Again, it is assumed that those who have more experience in the art will naturally realize how to stylize the small subtleties for themselves. I just didn't want to have to spoon feed anybody. The book illustrates perfectly what needs to be done from a technical standpoint. With a little practice and work, it will become stylized to your own handling. Additionally, in step 4, you don't really need to flash too much red - just a little. Trust me. It's my routine and I've performed it 1000's of times. In step 12, you could ribbon spread the whole deck face down first - that creates a nice picture too. At the beginning of the manuscript, I have a spectator name a card that they "see." In my own performances of it, I don't bother with that at all. I have them simply name *any* card they desire. Really, it's up to you to modify the handling to your own sensibilities. Just play with it. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and I hope you have fun with it. Whether you use it or not is entirely up to you, but as a working pro for more than 20 years now, I can tell you that it's been my opener for longer than I can remember and never fails to hit the target. Cheers! |

John, great work putting a simple easily available gaff to such good use. It has a lot of magical moments throughout so you get a few bangs for your buck. Wait a minute, this didn't even cost me a buck! Appreciate this. Well thought out and structured.

No problem guys, you're very welcome.
Glad everyone's enjoying it. Perhaps at some point I'll upload a video of me performing as I actually do it in my paid gigs. There is an addition I have to the effect that's not detailed in the manuscript that sends the effect to a parallel universe. When paired together it's called "Odd Man Out". Cheers! |
