Hi All,
I have a number of up-coming roving, close up etc gigs. I'm looking for great effects that would appeal to children and a family audience. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

I use a lot of puppets during my roving gigs.
Things to consider are reset and of course prop placement management. That is remembering what is in what pocket. Also of consideration is things that usually get applause or loud reaction. That can set you up to do a larger platform thing but on ground level. It will also let the person that booked you know that people are liking what you do. Variants of the Omni deck including the 2 pound deck of cards, rubber band stuff, and of course my walk around uses lots of coin bits. As in my platform work, I also bring sounds from sound generator, mosquito whistle, mouth noises and my harmonica. On good weather days, not to hot not to cold(or inside) I also bring my ukulele. Hi Wolly,
Mine is very low tech. It is a combination microphone and 5 or so buttons. One is Cartoon Motif. (boing-boing, wah wah, alarm clock, bomb exploding) The other is more musical.(chord being played, rap beat,.....) An example of it's use. During a coin routine...boing boing and the coin visibly jumps across...wah wah...the trick apparently didn't work. A book (and later I got the c/d) called mouth sounds and the Greatest Cartoon Voices stolen out of Hollywood have helped me add to routines. These are the sounds we used to get in trouble for in elementary school. When I work with middle school students I talk to them about the appropriate time and place for humor.(and sound effects) Harris

Wolly, Thinkgeek.com makes a sound effect T-Shirt with a programmable 20-sound MP3 keypad. If you find the shirt too bothersome (I did), you can cut the keypad away from the shirt and rewire it to a small belt-hook speaker. Great for those walkaround enhancements Harris is talking about.
I have a small hook-on close-up table for restaurant work. I've toyed with mounting the keypad under the close-up table, but haven't found the time. Skip

I have used colored billiard balls to great effect. kids like watching some ball manipulation and getting another new colored ball pulled out of their ears.

One of the first rope effects I learned, Prof. Nightmare, has come in very handy at a wide range of events. With "sleightly" different patter, it is easily adapted to different venues, ages and as Yul Brenner said in the King and I....etc....etc....etc...
