I had the DVD "Charming Chinese Challenge" for about 5 years. I never put time into practicing like I was suppose to. I finally focused on my practicing yesterday. The spectators I showed it to today were astonished. I think I will put it on the list with my favorite coin effects. Anyone else use that effect? And who created the routine?

The effect originally appeared in desTROYers by Joshua Jay (featuring the magic of Troy Hooser). I use this every single time I perform. It took a while for me to get the presentation down in a way that suits me, and the sleights took some work too to make it my style. Either way, its a fantastic effect and well worth the practice.

I bought DesTroyers a while back, and enjoyed doing CCC, but haven't performed it too much. Since then I combined it with "A Touch of Brass", which starts out with 3 silver coins, and they sequentially change into 3 Chinese coins. A wonderful intro for CCC.

I go through phases where I perform it more or less but it is the most succesfull coin trick I do. Really a category killer, ring and string and coin magic rolled into one. It is hard to follow.

I picked this up last year at Troy's Seattle lecture. It's a beautiful piece of magic. In the notes he offers the following credits:
"This routine was inspired by a trick from the mind of Nathaniel Lane, of Carrolton, Ohio. The routine utilizes a few standard 'Ring on String' moves, including Clifton's Ring Move (Variations, 1978). Harvey Rosenthal's 'Melt-Thru' (Melt-Thru, 1978) and Sol Stone's 'The Strung Coin' (Apocalypse, March 1978) are both fine coin and string routines that predate 'A Charming Chinese Challenge.' All three of these routines contain excellent penetrations and are worthy of your consideration." |

While Troy is the one who created this, I really like Marc DeSouza's handling and presentation on his DVD. Check it out if you get a chance.

Great routine. I use a presentation about Chinese Pickpockets and their methods. It has a great build and a wonderful payoff. Shoot Ogawa has some nice subtleties on the CCC dvd. Definitely a worker!

Quote: It's a really good DVD. It's revolves around presentations, which is what I like about his CCC performance. He doesn't teach the whole routine. You would need to have Troy's DVD or book.On 2011-03-11 10:49, Dynamike wrote:

The following credits are slightly reworded from the Effect section of the routine in the book DesTROYers by Joshua Jay. The routine was inspired by a trick by Nathaniel Lane. The routine uses various other 'ring and string' moves, such as Harvey Rosenthal's "Melt Thru," Sol Stone's "A Strung Coin," and "Clifton's Ring Move," which is in Variations by Earl Nelson. I first learned this routine from the book DesTROYers after I purchased it at a Troy Hooser lecture. I purchased Troy Hooser's Charming Chinese Challenge DVD many years later when I read that that the DVD had other ideas that weren't in the book. On the DVD, there's a great convincer that was created by Thomas Wayne for the second phase of the routine. There are other good ideas on the DVD, but that convincer is the only idea I use that wasn't already in the book. Even though the DVD has only one routine, it's a very worthwhile purchase. The book has many more routines other than Charming Chinese Challenge though, so it's a better deal than the DVD. I also have gotten great reactions with this routine, or, perhaps more correctly, Troy Hooser has gotten great reactions. I'm just the middleman!
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Same here Bill, I had the book first too. But I did not keep up with mine. I have a closet of so many books and DVDs, I feel more of a collector. I can not remembered what influenced me to get the DVD. When I saw it in action, it really got my attention.
What would be a different way to do the third phase?, (the ribbon melts off the coin in the magician's hand.) I do like the Spellbound move, but I am looking for something that is more angle proof incase others are watching the same time. |

There are variants to the effect that appeared after Troy's release of his routine. One of them uses a sh**l to help in producing the result: this solution is particularly making sense for the magicians who are familiar with the Jardine Ellis ring
