Last night Jay brought the road version of "Jay Johnson: The Two and Only" to the town next to mine. I had the pleasure of attending with Steve Petra.
Jay did a terriric job, and at the end of the show the audience leapt to their feet. Now, standing ovations have become routine and cheapened in this country, but last night's audience had a lot of older folks who tend to be more stingy with standing O's. In fact, one of my patients, a man in his 80's whose mobility is markedly impaired by Parkinson's disease, was on his feet! I was reminded how flawless Jay's technique is. This includes not only perfect lip control, but also acting (for both man and puppet) and figure manipulation. Jay is the embodiment of sprezzatura, the art of making the difficult look easy. Jay also came out after the show to do a "meet and greet" with audience members and was warm and engaging with every one of them, myself included. Jay Johnson: an artist and a mensch. Bob |

Indeed.
I keep trying to encourage him to bring his show to my town...or get a DVD together...or something. -Philip |

Well, if that's all your contract requires, you're a much more reasonable person than I.

Yes Philip, no matter how famous I will be, no matter how many requests I receive to travel the world with my aunturage who only will be employed to assure that they will satisfy my every need and stroke my ego, along with everyone else around me telling me what a terrific performer I am; I will never get a big head and I will always be reasonable and remember the little people that have assisted me in my goals.
Philip, now you know why I changed my username on the Café |

I asked him about a DVD, and he said that "we're working on something," but was vague on when it might be available.

I'm sure it won't be until he figures he's gotten all he can out of doing it live, or just gets tired of doing it, and they've no doubt been filming the shows for that someday DVD.

Attended Jay's show and had the added treat of hanging out with Bob Baker for the night. Very kind of Bob, in view of the current restraining order. Anyway, my take on Jay's aftershow reaction to the subject of a DVD of TTAO was that he was not at all thrilled by the idea. A performance had been taped but his parting comment was "perhaps as an archival record". It's quite apparent the Jay loves doing this show. His passion drives the production and that passion shows no sign of diminishing. He has labored over this as a live theatre production and my guess is he has not been satisfied by it's representation on tape/digital media. I'd like to see a producer with the right vision, step up and offer to make this show have a life of it's own as a DVD production. Something that Jay would be satisfied with artistically and willing to share with the same passion he has on stage.

I think Steve's take is correct, but I thought he said they were working on something. Perhaps wishful thinking on my part.

"Working on something" seems to ring a bell in my belfry, Bob. Let's see what emerges. Jay is a unique and accomplished voice artist. Not nearly enough people know who he is or what he can deliver to an audience.
