Many soldiers join for a patriotic reason, an ideal of protecting someone, or the idea of serving something greater than themself. Sadly some join because of cool ad campaigns or misguided thoughts of how to provide for a family.
The problem with the armed forces is simply that they have so many people that some will slip through the cracks and when they go bad, it is horrible. Often things happen. They just happen. Unless you have been in the situation, or under fire, you can not imagine how it feels to have a gun pointed at you, let alone with a bullet whizzing by you, or worse yet into the soldier next to you. It MUST do things to the psyche. Does it condone a single thing? Absolutely not. It does not provide an excuse, it does not mean we can abolish war in all cases, but it is what it is. Painting all soldiers or all cops or all mailmen with the same broad brush does NOTHING to help the situation either.

Most of my friends (i.e. extended family) are military or ex-military. And most of them are the best people I've ever known.
Some are ***s, because they are people, and some people are ***s. But most of them are far from it. So it bugs me when somebody says "All of column A is bad people who I shall spit upon." If you spit on my family, even metaphorically, then we'll be having words. Well, boxing practice starts back up next Monday. That'll calm me down a bit.

Chickenhawks, a love of violence and some delusions about folks asking for an armed invasion? So far so good, I guess, if that's your idea of a sensible world where you'd be happy to be in the other person's shoes. Keep up that view of the world and maybe it will come to your doorstep. What then of those who also feel it "good" to use force to remove the reins of what they see as oppression from our lives, but have a history of installing structures that serve their own interests and destroy about all of the cultural history of the places they visit?

Before anybody else says anything derogatory about people who choose to serve in the military let me ask a few questions,
What percentage of military personel is engaged in combat operations? What percentage of military personel is engaged in peacekeeping operations? What percentage of military personel does niether? Don't know? Then you're talking about **** you don't know. Might be a good idea to stop.

What percentage human waste does it take to taint a drink?
What percentage of bad apples does it take to spoil a barrel? Don't know? Then maybe it's better to stay away from inappropriate analogies

It's not an analogy, it's a straight question. It is, however, a perfectly appropriate response to your blanket statement condemning all miltary personnel.
Let me help you out: There were over 66,000 soldiers involved in UN Peacekeeping missions as of 2006. What a bunch of ***s, eh? They'll be burning in Hell for sure. This is what Peacekeeping is: http://www.un.org/en/peacekeeping/operat......ng.shtml "UN Peacekeepers provide security and the political and peacebuilding support to help countries make the difficult, early transition from conflict to peace. UN Peacekeeping is guided by three basic principles: •Consent of the parties; •Impartiality; •Non-use of force except in self-defence and defence of the mandate." That's right, a very high number of military personnel actively work towards peace. Tell me again what rotten people these peacekeepers are?

Well since all I said was that some soldiers do bad things and many do good things, then I'd like to know how a rebuttal to that should be taken.

Alright, I can understand that then.
Believe it or not, I do know and understand why many people in the Middle East hate the US. However, I don't think that excuses blowing up civilians. Likewise, I don't think 9/11 was a mandate to kill civilians, and I'd like to see those who do so punished severely. What I don't think we need is for every soldier in the military to be punished for the deeds of a few psychopathic individuals. Most of them do good work, and I'll stand by that.

For the record, I only "love" violence when it's between two consenting parties in a controlled environment. i.e., combat sports.
Blind naked emotional homocidal aggression makes me uncomfortable.

I'm fine with believing that most people in our military have good intent and are diligently upholding some strict professional standards of behavior.

I actually had no idea in the world what your first name was - I think I must put a shingle out as a psychic - that would after all count as a hit.
