Here are a few of my latest tidbit little ideas, I thought I might post them here and get a bit of feedback:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6s8IolPHHY No Camera edits or such things, and the color of the video was because I had to change the camera to "negative colors." It makes the faces of the cards show up better. |

I really couldn't see what was meant to be happening?

I think I just had a bad flash back to the 70's!
I have absolutely no idea what was going on in that clip and based on your intro, neither did you! MMc |

Can you please refilm with no fancy music or video effects and maybe use a regular deck? I think we'd like to see your ideas in a clean simple way. Thanks.

To be completely fair to me and my work, this is by my standard not the highest level of work, but an impromptu levitating card, a cleaner color change (designed for beginners), and a little card balance idea, which works better close up and live admittedly and if your making fun of my voice etc, I'm Australian, not drunk.
Now if I were to release a publication, this would be bonus stuff, this isn't my best workers, these are as I said, "a few little tidbit" ideas. |

I don't think anyone is making fun. You descriptions are fine but the video is very hard to watch (and listen to). Seems like you're more interested in making movies (fancy video effects, overlay music, credits etc..) I'm just saying that if you really want our feedback on your ideas, you need to present them to us in the cleanest way possible and focus on the magic not the video.
Thanks |

The video effects is because the light reflects a lot on the surface of these cards, and the fancy music is because I just wanted the visual work, because at said time of filming I was tired of filming, and it does use a regular deck of cards, a plain blue backed deck of bicycles, nothing more, nothing less, its just that the whole video is inverted colors. It makes it easier to see whats on the face. Plus I'd hardly call a band, which is called "Camp Kill yourself" fancy.

The image is too blurry, the frame rate is too choppy and the negative colours confuse the matter still. I hope you realize that people literally can't make out what's supposed to be happening.

So will you remake the video for our feedback?

Also, of course my video production with credits, overlay etc., is gonna be there. I have a degree in Creative media majoring in theatre and film production and writing. It's a given. But this video was about the magic. I love magic, my inspirations are Ed Marlo, Dai Vernon, Alex Elmsley. But my favorites would have to be Tommy Wonder, and Don Alan, Jeez, those guys can make me laugh at the worst of times! I was lucky enough to thru a uni course, get access to a classic books data base, and run thru "Discoverie Of Witchcraft" in it's original format, it was quite the read! But as a whole, I'd rather do magic, and stand up comedy (which I do both separately) than do film making. I have the potential skill, but not the passion. I'm not going to make the next Avatar.
And I realise I'm new here so your still learning about me, this is the Internet, and you all have every right to be dubious. So all I'm saying is, without the inverted colors, the video would be even blurrier, it's a lighting and webcam thing and reflection thing. Do you have any tips as to fix this? |

You have a degree in creative media/film production and you don't have a digi cam?

I'll try to film it off my 3g Mobile, if you really wish to see the ideas again, but that requires me getting some way to support it so I don't have to hold it, or getting someone else in to film it, and I'll do it later, because right now its 2:32 in the morning.
Posted: Mar 16, 2011 12:36pm -------------------------------------- No, because as I said, I don't like filming stuff (I don't have the passion), I like to write stuff, I write plays, poetry, stories and of course stand up routines. In essence I'm a writer and magician. Not a film maker, I'd probably make terrible films. About things like "A man turns into a woman" (ergo, the hot chick, etc.) But in the 1940's pre-feminism, see terrible ideas, hence why they do not allow me to have a digital video camera. Posted: Mar 16, 2011 12:47pm -------------------------------------- But I will try to refilm this, however I'm not a big patter guy, I don't like the way most people use patter. Why? Because I feel the audience doesn't deserve some rehearsed thing? before you say, "What they, you sacrilegious little git," I believe an audience should not have a fully rehearsed routine spat at them. I reckon the audience will appreciate the magic more if they feel like the words coming from your mouth are the first time they've ever sprang from your mouth. That doesn't mean to fore-go patter completely, I just believe in making the spectator feel special and appreciated, not just someone who was lucky enough to see you do something. Magic is for an audience, it's about them in reality, so why make them feel second-rate or used in some rehearsed plot? Now again you have every right to disagree with me, these are my views and my own only. |

Patter isn't supposed to sound rehearsed. Nothing rehearsed is supposed to look rehearsed.
Posted: Mar 16, 2011 12:55pm ------------------------------------- “A lady master of ballet once went to the theatre with her students to watch a ballet performance. In the intermission one of the students asked: 'Maestra, what do you think of the dancers?' And the Maestra answered, 'They do it very well-but you can see, that they have learned it.'” |

Well to me a fair few guys look very rehearsed, and it just turns me off. But than again can I draw attention to this: http://blog.penguinmagic.com/penguin-mag......era-kras
Now this guy seems to have favor here and there but he says and I quote "There is no difference between a magic show and a play... the Magician is the Actor playing the part of The Magician, a character that feigns the ability to perform miracles." Except from my professional opinion that's wrong, an actor does not play parts, or feign anything, the idea of professional trained actors is they are taught not "to act" they are taught to become the person. that's 200 years of the development of method acting and Stanislavsky thrown down the the drain there. The difference is a magician acts, where I believe he should not. Blaine for instance, he did not act like a magician, he acted like a laymen to laymen, that's why on True Astonishment box set he said, "the first season was my favorite, no one knew me, I could get away with so much more." Now again he goes deeper "the only way anyone will care about your magic is if it's scripted, properly choreographed and timed, engaging, and connecting for the audience." So this is what I'm talking about, its to me the same as those magician's who talk to their adult audience like 5 year olds to make them feel stupid, but again my opinion. |

You cannot wing Hamlet. The only way you can play Hamlet effectively is if you have "properly choreographed and timed" the part. So just because one guy plays Hamlet, and it comes off as too-rehearsed and stiff, all other Hamlets should not rehearse, and instead wing it?
I think it goes without saying that everything you do should be rehearsed, thought-through, choreographed. Just don't let that be seen. |

No, the idea is not to wing it, not to perform it, not to choreograph, but be Hamlet, get into Hamlet's mindset and don't' act as Hamlet, don't choreograph Hamlet, be Hamlet.
For that hour of duration on stage you are Hamlet. If you've ever been back stage during a play, no one talks, because they're not acting, they're in-character from the minute the show opens til they're taking the bow, that's what method acting is, becoming that person. Why do you think for instance that Heath Ledger prepared for months before filming the Dark Knight, and though I don't like the film, this was because he tried to get into the characters very essence, who this person was. Acting is not about being someone else, you play yourself as hamlet, hamlet is an extension of yourself. That's why there's casting, because not everyone has the personality to play Hamlet. The simple idea is to not act, but to be this person. You don't act like a magician, "52 cards, all blue backed, all normal on the front." No, as Houchin himself has said many times, "be yourself." And I agree that yes, it should be practiced. You don't go out and do a cups and balls routine after just getting the set, but you don't make it look obvious that you've done this 1000 times. It's something special for this person, why cheapen it, by making it look like, "another day at the office." |

Or, more appropriately, as Vernon himself said, "Be natural".
How exactly do you apply the method example of Ledger to magic, though? As you know, in theater, actors do not choreograph all of their blocking. That is one of the primary functions of the director. No matter how deeply a character gets into his/her role, that is almost always a constant. Not even Diggler was allowed to block his own scenes. |

I believe it should be a shared task, a trained actor didn't do 3 years of University to be spoon fed directions, but again that's just me talking.
Call this out of the box, but I just discovered my mobile phone is light enough to be stuck to a wall with blu tack, and the picture is much much better. However the sound quality has a bit to be desired, but this is visual stuff anyway, but I'll refilm after I have a shower. However I wanna refilm my single coin routine first, so it'll be a wait. |

...I reckon the audience will appreciate the magic more if they feel like the words coming from your mouth are the first time they've ever sprang from your mouth... OK, there's some important truth in that. But TheAzzman also said: Quote:
... however I'm not a big patter guy, I don't like the way most people use patter... Yes, there are magicians whose acts look flat and rehearsed. But there are other performers who always seem to be natural and fully themselves. If you ask them how they are able to do this, the answer might surprise you. Paradoxically, the only way that I know to attain the ideal (having the audience feel like the words coming from your mouth are the first time they've ever sprang from your mouth) is to have a script and to rehearse! I don't know any professional magician (this includes David Blaine) who relies on impromptu speech during performance. For the audience to experience strong magic, the actions and words of the magician cannot be a muddle. Clarity and focus is required. If you think that this is nonsense, find a comedian who specializes in doing improvisational comedy. (Think of guys like Robin Williams, for instance.) Go see that comedian's act--on five different nights. You'll learn some amazing things.

Ive upped my standards.Now,up yours!
