Ok, I have started and am determined to get my 100 pegs (going dominic system with 3 items: Person, Action, Object per peg) learned and put to use.
My only question is how does everyone map cards to a number 0-99? I have Joyal stack completely down(instantaneous recall both ways as well as knowing order by sight, can tell if something is missing/out of place without actually going card by card). Should I just map cards to numbers 1-52 on my pegs in joyal stack, or could that mess me up if I ever switch to Mnemonica or a custom stack? Other options would be NDO, creating a custom mapping, something like 1-13, 20-33, 40-53, 60-73 per suit, or could go 1-10, 10-20 etc for number cards and have a bank of higher numbers reserved for court cards... thoughts? |

I don't understand your question regarding mapping cards...why would one map 99 cards? maybe I'm not reading your post right.

Daegs, you might find HARRY LORAYNE's system (THE MEMORY BOOK,pages:112-114) for memorizing playing cards useful. Each card is represented by a CARD WORD (picture) --- which consist of letter structure & consonant sounds. Example: CAT = AC: C is for Clubs and T (1 downstroke) is for ACE. CAN = 2C: C is for Clubs and N (2 downstrokes) is for TWO. COMB = 3C, (M has 3 downstrokes, the B is silent). This pattern is easy to recall and identify -- example for ACES: AC/CAT, AH/HAT, AS/SUIT, AD/DATE.
In this system, each card becomes a tangible picture. You can number-peg the CARD WORDS for sequential recall as in an ACAAN routine or you can recall the order of the cards by using a story-line technique. |

Mnemonist: Assume I have a mapping of image to number, and I have 100 of them. I would only map 52 cards to those numbers, but I might not map them to 0-51 or 1-52. I might map the spades to 1-13, diamonds 20-33, etc. I could map all the number cards 1-40, then all the court cards 40-52
My point is that assuming I want to re-use my 0-99 peg system(which I do), how should I map cards to their numbered peg. perceptions: Thanks for the recommendation, however, since I have already started a peg system for 00-99, I would like to re-use the images I already have. I will be memorizing 3 cards at a time(3 cards make an image rather than single) sticking them into an 18 loci journey I suppose my question won't have many people to handle it, since few memory athletes would have a pre-ordered stack like Joyal memorized, and so few magicians learn a 100 peg system. To clarify, I will give an example: Currently if you name the three of diamonds, 34 instantly pops into my head due to my mem deck work. In my peg system, 34 is Charlie Daniels(Person) using a bow to play(Action) a golden fiddle(Object). If I use my joyal mapping, then after awhile I won't need to do the card-number-image conversion, and the three of diamonds will just BE charlie daniels. The problem lies in that if I ever decide to switch from Joyal to another memorized deck, then I could potentially become confused because now the three of diamonds is 07, and if I forgot the 3D->charlie daniels mapping, I would have to not use my current memorized deck but fall back to joyal to get the connection, whereas if I used a different mapping(like 1-13,20-33 or just 1-52 by NDO), I wouldn't(although I suppose that would be the same as memorizing a new pack order, they just might not be sequential). Oh well, since the joyal are so ingrained I will probably just use that, but I just forsee problems if I want to switch to another memorized deck, and wanted to see if anyone else had tackled this and had a solution |

I see what youre saying, I use the dominic system myself 00-99, especially for numbers and doing it for sport. with that said, I use a different system for card imaging. and when I memorize a preset stack(memdeck) I use the journey method in conjunction with a rhyming peg system. don't know why but this works sooo well for me. I currenty have three stacks memorized. and honestly, it wouldnt be hard for me to learn a fourth. have you checked into what andi bell does? just some info, but mnemonist Boris Konrad, can memorize a deck of cards using the old school journey method in about thirty seconds....great isn't it?

Hmm in 2010 Boris took 79 sec and only memorized 5 cards second attempt. Ben Pridmore who has a 2704 peg system(!!!) only got 37 seconds. Wang Feng has record in championships I think with 24 seconds. Simon Reinhard has record at 21.90s
I'd be super happy with getting down to 2 minutes. Do you just have person(100 pegs), person/action(200 pegs) or PAO(300) for dominic? And any reason you chose to go with a different set of pegs for cards(if I am reading it correctly, you don't reuse your dominic pegs?) |

I'm just telling you what Boris told me...i have 200(pa)...thats correct, I don't reuse the dominic pegs for cards, only numbers.

BTW...ive got it down to about 2 min to memorized a deck of cards with just the "person" image for cards. the fastest ive done was a minute thiry. I'm wondering, do you have your PAO already memorized?

I am currently on 37 in use(less than a week since starting). I am adding them in groups of 10-15, first by rote testing then I wrote a program to generate numbers with the new group as a set %, such as:
1: 262900 262230 225600 220022 260826 092909 092608 000830 292956 003030 2: 080022 095608 225600 260800 560800 260000 002930 560926 080009 263026 3: 437118 423037 428837 034242 191737 033788 374242 250409 254619 438803 4: 711943 600814 461734 142214 961715 431914 313418 141988 381010 464243 The first group is 26,29,00,22,30,56,08,09(latest additions), whereas bottom two lines are all my 37 pegs that I have so far. Since dominic is a little bit difficult to get every single initials to make sense, I am taking my time learning my pegs and choosing ones that will be memorable and not confusing. I want to get each prior grouping understood about what makes each PAO memorable, so I don't accidentally pick new items that are confusing or forget pegs. Most of my practicing is done during other events(over lunch, on treadmill, etc) so I don't always have a cheat sheet with me and don't want to have to look up forgotten pegs during practice. Goal of 2 min is just for end of the year, if I could get down to 1min or 1:30 that would be ever better. Can you explain your reasoning behind having different pegs for cards vs numbers? Seems like you rarely would need to memorize both cards and numbers as part of the same grouping so not sure reasoning behind that. |

For me...it just takes too long to convert a card using the dominic system to an image. of course, that's just me. the method I use for card imaging is second nature to me that I instantly see a person when I see a card, its funny, when I play cards, like texas holdem, the moment I peek at my hole cards, I see two people and I laugh to myself at the table, but at least I don't have to ever go back and look at them again, its actually a good habit when playing cards...hahahah
