I'm posting this here, because this is the part of the Magic Café I hang out in and I know James is often a poster here as well. I may also post this somewhere else if I figure out where it's applicable.
I attended a lecture with James Munton last night at Barry’s Magic Shop in Rockville, Md. I’ve seen James lecture several times before, and I consider him a friend, so my report may be biased, but I wouldn’t write this if I didn’t believe it. James delivers a really outstanding lecture for the working magician. His routines are “commercial” in that they pack small/play big, are easy to do by any competent magician, and have strong audience appeal. The knuckle-busters and card flourishers won’t be impressed--about the most technical move James does is a rare double-lift--but the magic is strong for an audience. For example, James performed a really usable sponge-ball routine with just two balls and a bunch of small ones. He performed his Little Book of Quotes and a clever book test, both of which pack tiny and play big, and he performed a money monte trick that was packed with entertainment and magic and took up almost no space at all. James doesn’t even know I’m doing this, but I mention it because I know he occasionally lectures and if he’s in your area you should try to get him to lecture at your magic club. The real performers in the group will appreciate the thought that goes into simplifying these presentations to make them workers. All that said, James was hugely upstaged last night by his 5-year-old daughter, Mirabai, who made her performing debut with a speedy strait-jacket escape. BTW, a tip of the hat to Barry Taylor, owner of Barry’s Magic Shop. Admission last night was “give what you want” with all of the proceeds being matched by Barry and donated to the Red Cross for disaster relief in Japan. Most of us threw in a $20, so I know there were several hundred dollars raised for a good cause. |

I see or talk James every once in awhile, as he lives in Texas now.
Every time, he has been a stand up guy. I have never seen him perform in a real performance though. But I have a friend that has, and he said that he was impressed. If my friend said that James was really good... then I believe it. I've also done shows for kids and at the beginning I ask the kids if they have ever seen a magic show before. Every once in awhile I will get a kid call out James. So the fact that they remember him... So yes, I have seen some of his stuff before and believe every word you say. There is another reason why I am typing this... but I will ask him if it's ok before I post it. It's a good thing, but I still want to ask. Randi |

Like Randi, I too hear often from my clients about James Wand. They either say they booked him last year and he was great or they saw him perform at their school. I have only heard great things about James from his audiences. I would love to catch his act sometime or his lecture...or both.
James...come to Crystals and lecture for DMC...

Oh gosh, thank you so much for the very kind words, everyone.
I would like to publicly thank Barry Taylor for hosting the lecture. His magic shop is one of the very best venues for a magic lecture in the country. Barry and Susie are wonderful hosts. If you are a magician wanting to lecture in the Washington, DC area you should definitely give Barry a call. Randi, I am intrigued - what is it that you want to say? |

Given credit where credit is due. James called me awhile back and told me I should make a more technical looking meter prop than the ones out now and definitely the ones from the past. He wanted one for the James Wand show. So I have been working on the idea for quite some time. Once I found a great source for smoke... or actually vapor... I started building them. Randi has some great looking props. I do like the look of the "Anything Meter". But for now my Axtelll version is great fun too! (Mine is modified so it can properly "explode")

I saw the lecture by James and it was really wonderful. His thinking on the bill monte/bank night routine is EXCELLENT, easy and entertaining, using props that are easy to get (and you can embelish it with a real-time load if you wish). His Mentalism book of quotes is PHENOMENAL. I would have paid far more to get it. It's really well done and is an actual book that fits in your pocket so that you can do WALK AROUND book tests. Just great! He has TWO book tests in his lecture, the other one I won't tell here but it is brilliant and solves a lot of problems other book tests have. His lecture notes are great and not slapdash like most magic notes. No misspelling, childish drawings or anything like that, it's all pure pro. My only regret is that the lecture seemed too short. I wanted to see 500 more routines of his, I guess. He also made the point that it's better to learn multiple presentations rather than multiple tricks, so that once you find a trick you like, you can customize it to any audience. Thanks James, loved it!

I caught James' lecture last year in Derby. Very impressed with his "spy" theme for what is normally called The Anniversary Waltz.
