I am opening up my next show with a flashy version of the torn paper/mouthcoil routine set to fast-paced music (this is a family-oriented stage variety show). I will then bring a kid volunteer up to the stage for a bit of comedy by-play with the Silly Wands (expandable plastic tubes that make crackling and/or flatulant noises when expanded). I will then segue into using the silly wands with the Magic Coloring Book.

I start off with a slapstick clowning intro with lots of gags and audience participation before introducing any props. Then it depends on the kids and which show. It may be Silver Septer, Banana Trick, Miser's Dream, Groove Tube, 5 Card Opener, Hot Book, Blooming Flower, Vanishing Bandanna, Ketchup Bottle, etc.

I do a version of a Duane Laflin routine: Color changing silks followed by two silks are vanished with TT; third silk goes into a dye-tube and the three silks (all primary colors) appear tied together. The three tied silks and the two color changing silks go into a "miracle tube" (mirror tube) from which I produce a final silk. Usually the final silk is a Happy Birthday silk, but sometimes it's a large dragon or butterfly depending on the venue. All of this is done to music.

I often open with some Contact Juggling accompanied by music and every Kid saying "Fushigi" in turn. I don't mind.

A comedy baloon warm up then change bag routine which I call the magic word maker, a sort of mismade word with silks.

I explain that I can only do the Kelly Magic show for children who can pass the magic test.
the test is 7 minutes of high pace magic starting with dye tube (to test if they can do the magic blow), diminishing cards (to test if they can say the word smaller very loudly) serpent silk (to test if they can whisper the words “jump”) linking rings using 4 rings (to test if they can count). This gets fantastic interaction and the opening of the magic show is packed with good quality magic. Lots of wows from children and parents and fits into the old saying “start strong and end strong”. |

I usually start my performances for kids with the Fantasio cane to 12-foot streamer. It's quick, magical and very visual.

I start by 'discovering the audience'. That is, I start setting up with my back to them, humming a silly tune. Sooner or later (usually sooner) someone says something, and I stop, look around wondering where the sound came from, then shrug & return to setting up. Well, that's all the encouragement the kids need! They shout at me, while I look all aound--in my hat, under the table--for the source of these voices, finally I slowly turn & see the kids with a startrled yelp & jump. I ask why theyre all here, and they say 'to see a magic show' (or often just "show" in which case I ask 'what kind of show?') I say I LOVE magic, and I try to sit along with the audience via the comedey chair. Eventually, the kids manage to bring me up to speed on who's supposed to be WATCHING the show, and who's supposed to be PERFORMING it. Having finally discovered that theyre an audience, I test them with Axtell's 'off-the-meter'.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Looking for a used "off the meter" to buy. Love the trick but don't have the money for buying a new one at full price right now. Is anyone selling or know of someone who is?

But don't you have to interact with them as you're coming in the door and setting up for your show. I'm just not sure how you go from acknowledging their presence to ignoring them and acting like you don't know they are there when you are ready to begin. |

I've a min or so of silly dialog with the kids and talk about learning to tie my shoes with magic...(self tying shoe laces). I then mention that my other foot has been feeling like I have a rock in my sneeker...(produce small pickle jar from shoe). Inside of the jar is my missing sock. I open it to find it is a stinky sock and make a big deal out of how bad it smells and looks. I then ask the bday kid to come up and help me clean it....(change bag). I go through the silly billy routine with the blow up wand and the break-away-wand. The sock is cleaned and the bday kid gets props (no pun intended) for his/her magical powers and helping me get a clean sock so the show can go on.

The ping pong ball on the nose. It is a warm up that establishes the ground rules and my character to the kids.
